    I first heard this music as part of a Merrie Melodies cartoon when I was about 5 years old...have loved it ever since. Never knew what it was called until some years after that; I asked my Dad for the music and he bought me a 78 speed record with some of Mendelssohn's music on it. I played it on my Roy Rogers/Dale Evans record player. So many, many years ago. Good memories!♥.

    I made a special trip to Staffa which inspired Mendelssohn to write this and when visiting, it's very easy to see why it did. The uninhabited chunk of rock rises dramatically from the sea with the basalt rock surrounding the mouth to Fingals cave which looks as though it's man-made rather than a natural geological fault. Approaching the lsland to land is an incredible skill itself and I watched in admiration at the way the young skipper handled the boat, timing his move to go forward on the "right" wave, then reversing the engines to "brake" just at the right point.
    I'd heard the overture many many times before i'd actually visited Staffa.....but it was a truly memorable trip which brought the music alive. It really is a very wild place.

    BBC Radio 3 brought me here.
    Funny story coz caught this brilliant piece, listening to the radio, randomly.
    I was amused instantly and starting to discover who composed that.
    I rejected Beethoven (music was too soft and gently), than after considering Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn, I've cancelled first two and stayed at last one.
    After short investigation on net has been confirmed, I was right, I felt the style and magic orchestration of Mendelssohn.
    It's shocking for me that me, ignorant never been educated in the cosmos of music, I could recognize composer.

    • @LondonSymphonyOrchestra
      @LondonSymphonyOrchestra  Před 7 lety +15

      Hi Harold, this depends on the conductor's preference, and this often changes depending on which piece they're conducting - for example their might be some important details he or she feels can be better highlighted with the seconds in a different position. The second violins can be placed opposite the first violins or next to them. Sometimes the other string sections may be moved around too, but usually it's the first violins who stay still in their position on the left of the conductor.
