Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vc - One of the most famous aircraft ever to take to the skies and one which is as familiar today as it was during the savage dogfights of the Battle of Britain, the Supermarine Spitfire was designed as a short range, high performance interceptor, taking inspiration from the inter-war seaplanes which had competed for the Schneider Trophy.

I like the starter kits with basic paints brush and glue. Really gets you started. As a kid paints were hideously expensive, so you could buy and make a model with a tube of glue. Add the markings but you had no colour on it leaving an unsatisfying mono grey with most kits. The old matchbox kits came in colours which helped.

Great intro video. For brush painting the brush itself is absolutely critical (obviously) so I'd think about adding a broad flat brush as well as a standard brush to the kits. This would make the main paint job so much easier. I know it would increase cost but one to think about. If not included in the starter kit itself then maybe a starter tools kit could have a flat brush in it instead of say the tweezers. Much more useful IMO and everybody already has some tweezers at home probably anyhow!

I went into The Range here in the UK and got a set of 6 brushes for £1.99 in the Stationary/Arts 'n' Crafts section and one of them is a 6mm brush. The Works bookshops also sell sets of synthetic brushes ideal for model making for under £5.00

I am going to try and add a bit more detail to the paint work maybe some streaks and used look, I've bought a few extra paints and brushes, but hopefully my model can look half decent
If it looks 50% as good as this is I'll be over the moon 🤣

Your newer Starter Sets are really good and well thought out. And so is this how-to vid. Excellent job!
I'd agree a flat brush would be a great add-on/replacement to the round brush provided in the set, much better suited for painting all those flat surfaces a plane or a tank is made of. But the I imagine the cost would go up.
Have you any plan to update/re-imagine the basic tool set, like you did so well with the Starter kits? I mean, the only tools I'd keep from the Basic Tool Set are the knife and the file (the video shows clearly how to use it, btw). The side cutter is a must have too, but there are *much* better alternatives out there than the one provided that certainly would not cost anything more. Ditto for the tweezers, imho 😅

Brilliant! I got the 1:72 Airfix Mitsubishi Zero and RAF P51 Mustang starter kits for Xmas recently but was too intimidated by the paints and brush to get started on them. After this excellent video, I'm raring to go! Liked and Subscribed!!!!
Edit: found two Airfix starter kits at home yesterday - the Spitfire and ANOTHER Mitsubishi Zero in white!
I love Zeros but only in white, not the camouflaged ones. The wooden stirrers you get at a McDonalds are very handy for stirring those long dormant modeling paint containers too :-)

Great video for beginners. If you do get any paint on the canopy use a wooden toothpick to take off the excess. I think the experienced modeller could use this as a base kit to make an excellent detailed kit because the mouldings are so good. Huge improvement on the early airfix kits.

Thank you for the tutorial and the info, I wanted to start a hobby while I have Zero or even Sub-Zero knowledge of painting with all those brushes, thinners, coats and terminologies. However I know it will be fun to build and finish. I'm buying this model (I was searching for beginner kits that include the needed paints and this model from Airfix came across) so this video really helps.
Also If you can recommend any more beginner kits , tutorials and a place to get that basic knowledge to build on, it would be great.

That's a pretty decent coat of paint, applied like that. It can be quite tricky to get such a smooth finish on flat surfaces.
    Other thoughts:
    • It might be possible to do the panel lines (if recessed) using a cheap and easily accessible water colour set for kids, just to subtly pick out the details with an appropriate tone. Water colour dries matt (no recess glares) and can be wiped off an acrylic surface with a bit of water (making it easy to adjust). It can also be used for dust, rust and soot type weathering (usually very matt). Other weathering techniques can require a lot of special coats and weathering paints/thinners.
    • Throw some hot orange water colour into the light gray acrylic (separate on the pallette) and you've got a flesh tone for the pilot face.
    • Would recommend using a wet palette => sandwich a plastic lid + wet tissue paper + and baking/oven paper. The paint sits on the baking paper which is kept moist by the tissue paper underneath. This prevents the paint from crusting as quickly, perhaps improving surface finish once applied. And it saves paint.
    • Like others have mentioned, if you mess up the canopy it's possible to scrape off the dry paint (if acrylic) using a toothpick. Using something like white spirit for removal (when using enamel paint) will fog up the clear plastic iirc.

Nice video for beginners! However I have noticed the extras (glue, brush and paints) included in starter sets make them a lot more expensive than normal model kits without them. However when you start from scatch, or maybe you are not sure if you want to pursue any further modelling after a starter kit, I guess it's handy they are included.

While I think of it.. the corner flap torn off the box is a perfect right angle so could be used to check alignment if say a horizontal stabiliser was 90 degrees to the vertical.

    Good afternoon Airfix crew,
I’m an avide fan of the airfix line in general and the war ship kits in particular. After watching your teaching method I must applaud you for your technique. I also wish to give you high marks on the front cowling and the way you got rid of seam. I wonder if you had continued to the cockpit and do away with the seam altogether making the seam on the actual lines of the aircraft.got our I have built the Hood and Bismarck and made the Hood my favourite. Might I suggest that you improve the warships by adding improved artillery and such that are of very poor quality. Might I also suggest that you create an Avro Arrow to your new aircraft entering as this aircraft was a phenomenal aircraft that has been way ahead of the fighter development of the world. It was the first “Fly-by-wire aircraft on a delta wing structure that, if one could suspend it, one could cover a spitfire mk5 under its wings. It was also twin engines, all weather with two crew structure that was creating speeds of Mach 1.7 without afterburners. Not bad for 1957 eh!
    Forever in His service

thats way better than the ones i tried to make in the eighty's! 😀 but the poly cement out the tube must be quite strong just sitting there🤣, and i was desperate for you to use the black diluted as a pin wash over the panel lines, that would have been cool. Its excellent airfix is still going, i'm pretty sure nearly everyone's first model was an airfix!

I really should have watched this through properly before I started, I got the majority done pretty well apart from thinning the paint, didn’t know to use paintbrushes and wet the model before applying roundels and annoyingly the cockpit roof didn’t go in properly, I’m fairly pleased with it but usually display it to one side because the other sides roundels are a tad wonky, this is only my second build I’m buying more starter kits till I’m confident enough to do the proper ones
