Teresa Teng (1953-1995), a famous Taiwanese pop music singer. She was an influential iconic musical figure in the Chinese-speaking region and other parts of Asia. Her singing career reached the peak in the Chinese-speaking region and Japan in the 1970s and 1980s. She was widely welcomed in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, Malaysia, the Korean Peninsula and other places. She initially faded out of the music circles in the 1990s. In 1995, she suffered an asthma attack and died suddenly in Chiang Mai, Thailand. She has a huge influence on Chinese society, and the world has a reputation as "Where there are Chinese, there is Teresa Teng's singing.

I met her a couple times back in 1993. I was so star struck by her presence. She was so modest, kind and easy going. She was consider one of the most phenomenal, talented singers in Taiwan since 1970s. She could speak more than four languages fluently as well as several Chinese dialects. Not only was she so famous in Mandarin speaking countries, she was also made it big in Japan where considered her a genius in singing ability !

She's my favorite singer of all time. Not just her music, but she herself was loved throughout all of Asia. She sang in several languages, and was always the consummate professional, recording over 1,500 singles in total. Wikipedia does a pretty good job of telling her story, but the best way to discover her is just to let one CZcams song lead to another. If you let yourself go down that path for an hour or so, you will fall in love with her, too. Guaranteed.

Hamasaki Ayumi broke the record 17 years later(2003), but the Award was renamed before Ayumi broke the record, this leaves Teresa Teng the only one to set that record.

You should check her (rare but available on CZcams ) concert where she sang some songs in English. Much easier to compare and react to not only because of the language but because it's an American song she sings - mandarin and canto songs that she sung in this era did not always stretch her ability -and ironically for me her talent is very obvious when she was out of her singing English, obviously it ought to be out of her comfort zone yet she nails every part, both in power and the oh so so so smooth delivery.

She has influenced entire culture. There are very few musical artists in the world who have such wide range of influence. Unless one cross musical boundary, it can never equal Teng's status.

They said in China during her time that Mao ruled by day and Teresa ruled by night. She reminded the Taiwanese soldiers of life back home in China and gave many bittersweet memories. Not starting a war here but it is what it is. Teresa died too early from an asthma attack. She had many years left in her unfortunately but we did see her peak, just not plateau.
