- The World's Longest Free Scenic Ferry is the Kootenay Lake Ferry, which takes 35 minutes to make the 8km crossing of Kootenay Lake. Would you venture this far to ride this ferry?

Oh my goodness you were one of the last people to visit Lytton. In its history though, this is the 4-5th time it's burnt down. Part of their history being located in "Canada's Hot(est) Spot" is that they would rebuild stronger everytime they were destroyed. Great video !
Damn, the fact that Lytton is now burned down is so crazy and terrible.
Ikr, kind of crazy how fast it happened.
I wonder if they will rebuild or just level it?
@@paulsture7045 yeah good question, I hope the insurance pays well...
Happening everywhere in BC. I don't believe in church but I believe I'll be fighting fires...
its a travesty, we need to start actively fighting these fires or it could happen again! they wait too long and look at the result, if you want to see change vote in your local elections please.
@@karenthomas6737 amen to that.
500 dollars is a small price to pay for priceless friendship. Well done.
Retired old woman. Not only do you make me wish but it's lovely living vicariously with you. Thank you
You are so welcome
As Arnie so eloquently put it, "I'll be back."
Riley, I always enjoy Mike's videos, but it is special when you join him. I can see how good of friends you are, and it's always good to have a friend to explore with. Congratulations on your new baby!
Great to see you again Riley!
What a positive presence you possess. Good to see you and thanks for the glimpse of your family. The little one is precious and so beautiful.
A delightful surprise to see Sarah! ❤️ From a old coworker
Hi Ronglou!! Hope all is well!
My son and his friends rode their motorcycles through Lytton last summer. He said it was a beautiful town. We are here for all of you ❤
Mike you are a one man Tourism BC promoter! Beautiful trip you highlighted this week and it was nice to see Riley again. 😊
Wow Mike. The cinematography on this production is spot on!!!
Official travel Ambassador of British Columbia wait…. Canada!!
You truly are an inspiration and my favourite CZcamsr.
Stew
Thanks for thinking of Lytton. Glad you stopped at Paddy Shack in Nakusp; it was a great place for a roadside burger and poutine. The Kootenay Lake ferry brings back memories of my youth, including of the Anscomb which was the main ship before it was replaced by the Osprey. Too bad you weren’t able to go up inside; the booth seats have osprey motif supports which I thought were cool. Thanks for the video!
I've watched a lot of travel videos for years, Sailing La Vagabonde, Sailing Uma, Sailing Delos, Anthony Bourdain, Ovens Rocky Mountain Bushcraft, Eva Zu Beck, many others, a couple other BC CZcamsrs....AND YOUR VIDEO KICKS ASS. Outstanding pacing. Great story. Great music. Enthusiasm, great editing. Two thumbs up. My brother and I once stuck pins in a map with our eyes closed to go wherever the pin hit for a holiday. We opened our eyes and looked. Ainsworth. Never heard of it. We drove there and found out it was a hot springs area- one hot springs had a cave in it- near Nelson that had great bars. Great holidays start out with crazy ideas. Taking the longest free ferry is right up there. Great video. Thanks for posting.
I love riding around Kootenay lake. Kaslo to new Denver, highway 31A, will never get old. The best combination of scenery, technical curves, relaxing sections. Could ride that road all day and it never get boring.
Check out Harold street cafe in Slocan, worth the wait. Oh and if you come down Hwy 6 from the north, you'll be back.
I was having a bad and sad day, I watch DownieLive and a quickly have a grin on my face. Thank you for what you do!
Love your enthusiasm. So glad to see you wearing your helmet & leathers despite the heat!
you got to Kootenay Bay and didn't ride highway #3A to Creston? It's rated in the top 5 rides in North America for motorcycles and you guys missed it!
i agree, a must ride if in area. Drop down to Creston, have lunch then return.
Honestly so fun and beautiful
Also up past kaslo to lardeau at the far north tip of the lake, and kaslo to new denver are not to be missed while there.
I used to ride the Kootenay Lake Ferry at least a few times every summer to visit my grandfather’s summer home out at Crawford Bay. Seeing this brought me right back!
I always wanted to try to get on the Osprey 2000 rather than the Balfour because the Osprey had (has?) a snack bar on board and a great indoor seating area
My heart goes out for people in Lytton and yes I did contribute to the fund to help them!
What a wonderful excursion! And thanks for showing Lytton again. Yes, I contributed to the fund.
Seeing before and after shots of Lytton is so dramatic, but an exciting trip just the same. Another video to make me appreciate the province I live in.
We did that trip 30 years ago with our four children, the youngest being 10 months old. Thanks for the memories!
Forgot to say Hello to Riley....Congratulations on the new baby!!...all praise to you!
Your BC travel videos are the best you've posted so far. Great for those of us trapped in concrete jungles to get a glimpse of the natural beauty of Canada. Thanks.
You forgot to add one thing... the memories... priceless
This was really a fun one. I thought the reaction and cable ferries were really cool not needing a motor. The scenery from the big ferry was spectacular, but hey, it's British Columbia. Good to see Riley back and so nice to see his new daughter.
Glad you enjoyed it
These kinds of trips are the coolest. Why? Because you don't "have to" make them...you WANT to make them. Taking us along with the video...that's a bonus!
Cool ride for sure!! Cooler views off that free ferry!!!
The monologue at the end of the video when you explain how it’s not about the destination so much as it is about the journey + spending time with Riley: legendary.
Also I watched this in the shower for some reason. Just had to mention that I had a great shower thanks to you Mike! Let’s go!!!
You never cease to amaze with fresh and novel content. Love it.
We were just there during the heat dome and didn’t diminish the beauty of the Kootneys! I love how your travel videos have different “goals” every time. You never take the straight path to a destination but take on a more interesting way! Like experiencing Kootneys but packaging it to heading to the longest free ferry! And getting all the insights to it including the interviews to people who actually work these things!!!! You are a great story teller! The edits and cinematography captures them all. You inspire me to travel differently with fresh set of eyes.
Btw, the Lytton shots are heartbreaking to see after the devastation.
P.S. and always putting a cause to your videos in a non-suffocating way!
I’ve watched most of your videos and appreciate work. I especially appreciate that you rarely monetize your videos. Good work.
Another enjoyable fantastic video to watch...I was reminded why its called Beautiful British Columbia!!!
The 3a south from that ferry to Creston is a great road. I love that drive.
Mike, this is the first video of yours that I've seen.....but I can tell you this....you, sir, have your priorities set correctly. Thank you for taking us along with you on this trip. It felt almost as if I were there (without the smells of course.) You've got yourself a new sub here. Keep up the great work! If you can call it that! Cheers!
Thanks. Welcome Tim!
Hey Mike, just stumbled on to this video! Life is an adventure and sure do it right! What a great experience, and spending quality time with ur friends!
What is priceless is the long ferry ride, thanks mike
The Kootenays are gorgeous to travel through pretty much any time. Nice little bit of Kaslo at the very end!
It really is!
I go to Nelson and Kootenay Bay about twice a year from Vancouver but prefer not in the summer. Just too hot! Love that area, one of the most beautiful spots in Canada.
Mike, i think it is amazing how you bring US new stories every single weekend and how we get used to it👏 your friend Riley is pretty cool as This vídeo. I liked so much🏆 thanks and keep on smiling😁
Pizza and a true friend?? It couldn't be better👍 congratulations to Riley👶
Glad you enjoy it!
Another great video Michael!!! It was really fun seeing Riley in a video again and quite the bonus for you to be able to do this trip with him.
I totally agree, Ron. It's always good having a friend along for the ride.
That's so chilling to know that the places you visited in Lytton were completely destroyed not long after. Amazing video and such a beautiful area.
I am loving this channel! The journey is always the destination. No mater where I end up, it is still just part of the journey to the next intermittance!
Welcome back to the Kootenays!
So lucky you came when you did, super smokey now. Needles ferry is closed due to fires.
The road from New Denver to Kaslo is world renowned for it's scenery. Love seeing my backyard through the eyes of others.
Great video Mike. Having a close friend with you makes the trip so much better. Definitely lots to do in B.C. Cheers
You got that right!
I loved this video! Grand editing, and music made it even better. 💥🎉🎉
Wait, whaaaaat? We have to wait a whole week to see more????
Thank you so much!! Yes... I know, we all have to wait so long for the next video 😄 but this one took 5 days just to film, plus the planning and editing. I'm planning lots of great adventures for you!
Honestly Mr Downie, you are bonkers, in the most delightful way! May you keep on doing whatever it is you keep on doing - its fascinating!
Thanks Mike! I have been waiting all week for the video and it meets the expectation.
I always enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one. Your “longest free ferry” looks similar to free ferries in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The passage from Ocracoke to Hatteras is free and there are several ferries so the service is continuous. To get to Ocracoke from mainland (Swan) North Carolina you must take a three hour ferry which costs approx $10 US. All other ferry services in NC are free and it’s debatable which is the longest ( 17.95 miles in NC) but the Ocracoke to Hatteras length will give the BC ferry a run for its money. Keep up your videos that I enjoy very much. Cheers, Colin.
These free trips are always well worth it thanks for showing off or beautiful British Columbia to the world !!
Who do we write to to nominate Mike as an unofficial ambassador? I’ve tried but…
Let’s go people! We need to have this guy deified…I mean recognized, as our ambassador!
So much beauty. Seeing the devastation of the fire in the midst of it is tragic and yet we know it will be back, The resolve of the human spirit to regroup and carry on in spite of that shows the strength that is within us. Thanks Mike. Good to see you once again - missed you last week.
The journey is more beautiful than the destination itself, which is the reason I love to travel :)
most under rated channel in canada that i know
You go to such cool places and experience so many things, thank you for bringing us along for all of them, id love to go and adventure to the places that you’ve shown us
You were lucky to go thru Lytton. I had always just passed by it.
Super lovely. And When Lytton burned, my stomach ached.
Another great video, Mike! I loved seeing all the amazing scenery up in BC. You continue to renew my desire to go up north, once the border officially opens, and explore more of Vancouver and BC. Thank you too for sharing about Lytton. Love from Seattle! ❤️
Canadian border is open , American one......not so much
Bring some wintergreen chew and I’ll trade ya some kinder surprises and all dressed chips
Well, you never fail to deliver the most heart tugging videos that mirror my personal experiences. I have appreciated your nostalgic (for me) tours of the Lower Mainland plus now your trips to Ashcroft & points north are especially evocative because we now live in the Kamloops area. We love that sweet trip across the McLure Ferry & take our company on that great country drive through Westsyde & ferry across the North Thompson & then tootle on back to Kamloops on the Hwy 1 side. Chase & Salmon Arm are also places we love to visit. A memorable childhood camping trip in the Kootenays has also been sharpened up for me! I’m deeply grateful to be included in your travels thru these videos. Good to see that your trip was earlier than the fires because we are spending most of our time smoked in now. Rather brutal!
Great ride, beautiful scenery, spending time with a friend....the best
Fully worthwhile trip! The scenery is unmatched, especially on the route you guys took.
That looks like a super awesome time with friends with an absolutely beautiful backdrop!
Picturesque landscapes and comfy ferry wow !😍⚓⛴
I love those trips. They are the best. Because you’re living in the moment.
That ferry is 10 miles down the highway from me.Lived here my whole life.Paradise!
Mike you’re becoming my favorite CZcams person every time I watch your videos. And probably one of the nicest guys I’ve ever seen. I’d like to hang out with you all day too! I second that Riley haha.
GREAT to see Mike and friend traveling again! ♥♥♥ :) Thanks for showing us the beauty of Lytton and my heart goes out to the people that lost everything in the area, VERY sad news! At the same time I am extremely relieved to know that you n your travel partner were not caught up in that horrible blaze! Keep up the travels and PLEASE stay safe Mike!!!! ♥
Mike, what a great video. Thank you for taking me along with you. Lovely, lovely scenery. I want to travel!!!
Its always the Journey u gotta enjoy, the destination is just a cherry on the top
Great video! The simplest things are the greatest adventures!
Exactly Kal!
You have the right attitude.
Nice video and very informative and very entertaining and very satisfaction more videos.
"keep a positive attitude, things will work out for you", really love your optimism. Hope to see you around somewhere in Vancouver. I never knew there was such a great youtuber in our wonderful city.
Great video and scenery! I have taken a few ferry boats, but have never heard of a reaction ferry. Not only is the scenery great in your videos, but I like learning new things and the personality behind the video is great! Thank you for inviting me on your journeys!
We plan our routes around the free ferries. It's our favorite thing about BC. Tiny little ferry up the road from the 1 you went to ride, over toHarrop-Proctor. Beautiful little ride on a motorbike, on the other side. Not a long route, but just gorgeous.
Mike it was so good to see u again it felt like forever😁. This vid was so Awesome and so Beautiful and it was great to see Riley again too i love ur previous vids with Riley. This is the adventures that keeps us alive and makes everything worth it. Thanx again Mike i can not wait to see were ur are taking us in the next vid stay safe😁🍁🇨🇦👍🏻.
6:03 I swear I remember this guy or maybe someone else, giving me change while I played only 3 songs I knew on guitar at Granville station upstairs entrance
I played Metllica Fade to Black, Knocking on Heavens Door by Clapton and Thank You by Zeppelin
I had a blue poncho, blue backwards hat and blue jeans and was there daily for a year when Canada was 125 years old
God Bless
holy cow! I've been on that ferry when I was a little kid. This video jogged my memory
Friendship is always a great destination. One of your better ones, Mike!
Yes! What up, Riley?! Top work, Mike (and editor, Matt). Heart-breaking to see Lytton before the fire. We all love the hotter weather, but I hope it cools off soon. Much love to BC, and DownieLive, obviously!
Couldn’t agree with you more, Liam.
Thanks so much.
@@DownieLive- Mike, when you start you overseas travels again, here is another free ferry to place into your next Irish itinerary taking you across the River Shannon from County Clare to the Kingdom of Kerry.
You just can't beat the scenic drive along the western coast of Ireland called the Wild Atlantic Way!
Not sure why, but I thought this was one of your best videos. Excellent road trip. Beautiful scenery. And I learned something about ferries. Thanks Mike!!
Wow, thanks! I kind of agree with you. It's one of my favourites too, Peter. 😊
Your videos are always excellent!!!! Thanks. Finally moving from Brazil to Vancouver in October to see all the amazing things/places you introduced me to.
Super!
your timing is a bit off- ideally you go to cold countries in the spring/summer and warm countries in the winter - just so you know you will be arriving right at the beginning of the wettest four months of the year - good luck with your move
Hi! I just want to say I LOVE your content! Keep it up!
I am so envious of you and all the trips you make. Beautiful British Columbia.
All the time your videos are really interesting and really fun. Great to see Riley again, and his family. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you so much!
New subscriber I am a 60 yr old grandma and I love your vlog.
Oh wow! I love it! Sweet video bro! This is the life! :)
Thanks Kostas!
It’s an adventure alright!
The Lytton footage... whoa...
I love when Riley joins! 😍❤ 💥💫 Such a babe. And you two have such great chemistry as friends and on your adventures.
👍👍 UP MIKE! Loved the video!
Thanks Ira!
This is the best channel I have come across in a long time.
Mike, your videos are very helpful to the newcomers in GVA. Thank you for showing your BC in an extraordinary way.
My pleasure!
I also did this trip on a 93 VFR many years ago. Awesome!
Another great video Mike. I love finding lake and river ferries in out-of-the way place, especially those that are not motorized!
This was a great video. And s relative bargain for you and Reilly. Time spent with your best friend is priceless. Thank you for sharing this. You're an inspiration. 👍
Thank you so much!
Great videos Mike! Beautiful out there
And that’s one of the takeaways from the pandemic….to savour the small moments in life. Amazing shots in this video, Mike! ❤️
Many thanks!
I liked your music and of course, the video...beautiful country and wildlife!
Glad you enjoyed it
I loved this! I rode a ferry from anacortis Washington to Vancouver BC went through customs then back on the ferry to go back. It was a day trip I took with my grandparents. It was fun. Have a great week Mike!😊
your channel is criminally underrated
These videos are always so good. Thanks for sharing Mike
Like your content brother because you explore undiscovered places
More to come!
Fabulous scenery and ferry info.
top quality production as always. I think i recognized Abbotsford in the beginning?
Maybe on the next adventure, you can take highway 3 starting from Hope all the way to Creston. It's a very scenic drive.
Great suggestion!
Late to the party, thus it's likely hardly anyone will ever read this comment, but I'm glad CZcams recommended your channel to me. The Kootenay area is my favourite region in BC, and apparently I've visited often enough to have recognized highway 31A where the moose cow was having her bath at 7:04. Anyone driving 31A between Kaslo and New Denver ought to take the 10 minute side trip into Sandon, which is slowly transforming from mining ghost to museum town, and has a dozen or so former BC and Calgary Transit trolleys in, um, various states of repair. Ainsworth Hot Springs is my favourite (too bad it's a 10-12 hour drive from Calgary), and Halcyon and Nakusp are excellent resorts for a soak, too. Oh, and if you take other commenters' advice on driving 3A to Creston, keep an eye out for the Glass House, built by a funeral home operator with thousands of used-up embalming fluid bottles.
Beautiful scenery from ferries. In NYC, we used to take the ferry to work when we lived there. It was a,nice approx 30 minute ride.
