Two more suspects involved in the severe beating of a 22-year-old man in Thousand Oaks last weekend made their first court appearance Friday in connection with the alleged assault that, prosecutors say, was captured by a surveillance camera. So far this week, 11 suspects, including an 18-year-old woman, Miriam Ruiz, have made court appearances in connection with the assault. Ten suspects have been charged with the attack and attempted robbery. Ruiz is suspected of being one of the two getaway drivers and is being charged with being an accessory to the crime for the benefit of the gang, prosecutor Joann Roth said. Ventura County Superior Court Judge Bruce Young on Friday postponed the arraignment of Jason Jon Schreiber, 31, and Abraham Carpio Alonso, 20, both from Thousand Oaks. Young allowed the postponement to allow the two men to be assigned defense attorneys. The judge set Schreiber’s bail at $260,000 and Alonso’s at $100,000. Roth credited witnesses for helping police catch the suspects, after the attackers drove away in two cars after the beating. Juan Huertas, of Thousand Oaks, had gone to the USA gas station on Janss Road on May 22, when he was attacked by at least 10 adults and juveniles near a busy intersection about 8:15 p.m. Roth said the suspects will be charged with street terrorism; assault with a deadly weapon causing great bodily injury for the benefit of the gang; attempted robbery and conspiracy. The suspects are alleged members of the Conejo Valley Locos, a violent Thousand Oaks criminal street gang, prosecutors said. Ruiz told police they were driving around looking for rival gang members when they went to the gasoline station, Roth said. The assailants drove up to the gasoline station in two carloads. They used a tire iron in the attack against Huertas, a Thousand Oaks resident, after he refused to give one of them money. The video shows gang members flashing gang signs and the victim being punched, Roth said. Huertas ran after he couldn’t get into his pickup. The assailants caught up to him in the middle of Janss Road near the Moorpark Road intersection and attacked him while he was on the ground, said Roth. “They beat him with a tire iron until he lost consciousness,” she said. One witness followed one carload of suspects until police stopped the car and made arrests, she said. Another witness took the license plate of the second car, which helped police track down and arrest the remaining suspects, Roth said. The victim, who had just left his girlfriend after having dinner with her, asked police, “Why did they do this to me? I didn’t do anything to them,” Roth said. Huertas suffered a concussion and numerous bruises and cuts. He was taken to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center.
