    Fun Fact: Laura Ingalls Wilder and her husband Almanzo Wilder finally settled forever on a farm in Mansfield, Missouri, deep in the Ozarks. She spent her last 60 years there, wrote the books there, and died there. Laura and Almanzo are buried in the town's cemetery. Besides Wilder, the other big attraction in Mansfield is the Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co. It's their home base. I live in Missouri and have made several trips to buy seeds at Baker Creek and see Laura Ingalls Wilder's farm home, which is a perfectly preserved museum today. It's a great little weekend trip for me.

    My grandfather, who passed in in the early 70s, would come in from work in mid afternoon and mix a drink. It was a glass of his own cow's whole milk with a big spoon of sugar and 2 raw eggs. He beat it up real good, drank it down and went back to work.

  • @AuntNutmeg
    @AuntNutmeg Před 2 lety +7

    If you start with a clean whisk/hand blender and beat the egg whites first, then work on the yolk mixture you will save yourself some cleaning in the middle. 😊

    My Dad would make us eggnog and have us drink it whenever we had bad belly aches. Something about the raw egg would supposedly attack the bad stuff making our bellies hurt. We didn't want to drink it when we saw the raw egg go in it. Then he added a little sugar, raw milk, and vanilla. I'll never forget watching him using the hand crank mixer to mix it all together. I still have that hand crank mixer. Of course, we held our noses to drink it because we thought the raw egg would be terrible, but it was oh so good. We would fake belly aches to get more, but Dad caught on to what we were up to. LOL!! Thank you for the wonderful memory!!!

    Makes sense! Milk on its own has electrolytes and many times refreshes me during hay season. I also love a good Yankee punch, also called haymaker's punch: apple cider vinegar, lemon, ginger, and a sweetener like molasses or honey. Fresh ginger is extra special in this. I make a concentrated version, put it in a jelly jar or pint jar, and add to ice water, iced tea, ginger ale.

    I used to have bouts of food aversion as a child and my parents would make me eggnog as often as I wanted.
    As an adult I've gotten heck from so many people for consuming raw eggs, but I still make this whenever I know I need nutrition and I don't feel "hungry"(really it's more of a sensory/texture thing) I've always looked at it as liquid nutrition but without all the chemicals that are in ensure or boost type drinks.

    What a treat! A quick recipe för what is called "eggmilk: 2 eggs + 0,11 pounds of butter into a bowl. Mix in 3 cups of boiling water (in 3 sections, boiling it between to keep up the temperature, especially if you want to keep some in the fridge). Season if you like; vanilla, cocoa, instant coffe, cinnamon, cardamum... In summer i mix in frosen berrys in done eggmilk and get smooth icecream, my kids loved it! If you want it a little sweet use a little suger or honey (no honye to small childre though).
    Good for people with gluten intolerans, gives a lot of nutrition - a lot of people gives it to children instead of gruel and it taste really delicious. You make it real quick and can be stored in the fridge for 2-4 days.

    I saw the best way separate eggs yesterday… le cordon bleu chef approved… crack all the eggs carefully into a bowl and then reach in and grab out the yolks! Hopefully you don’t have soft yolks that would break into the whites. I suppose one could break into a small bowl and then slide into the big bowl.

    • @angelabell6364
      @angelabell6364 Před 2 lety

      I tried this just randomly recently to see how it worked and it was amazing! I like scrambled eggs, but have an issue with the texture and flavor of yokes when not mixed with the whites (I know, I am weird, I have tried, I just can't do it 🤷‍♀️) but it was soooo easy to just reach into a bowl and pull out all of the egg yolks and throw them in with my husband's eggs so that he gets double the yolks! And you only get your hands messy one time I stead of for every egg.

I don’t think we ever separated the egg whites when I was a kid; maybe that is for a frothy topping on special occasions. I haven’t made it in years; need to get my Little House Cookbook out. I have a question, and I'm not sure the best place to post it, so I'm posting it here. I've wondered for a long time if your family has been affected by covid at all? No judgment either way--I'm honestly just curious because it has hit me twice, and everyone tells me they're so surprised because I "do all the right things," i.e. exercise, eat healthy, take supplements, etc. Apparently, I'm doing something wrong! And you guys seem to be faithfully uploading videos in which you all seem perfectly healthy, so I'm wondering what your secret is, I guess! Maybe I should be doing the elderberry syrup year-round?

      We’ve had it at least twice… but not too bad either time. If you look back to the March 2020 videos you’ll see I was sick FOREVER!!! That was our first round with it. 😅

      I've never seen it here in NY state either, (NY produces more maple syrup than Vermont - bigger state = more trees!) maybe what I make here would be grade B, who knows! Maybe if you go buy it from the producer they have some grade B on the back shelf or something?

      I get it from my local community food co-op. I've also seen it on regular grocery store shelves along with the grade a syrup. The grade b is cheaper and more nutritious and flavorful.

      Grade B is "Dark" maple syrup (as opposed to Light maple syrup which used to be called Grade A). "They" stopped the grade a and b for light and dark some years back.

    This may sound crazy but do you sell your milk? I’m local to you and looking for a source. :)

    I've literally never had eggnog. It's not really a thing we have in Australia.

      I was like no way!! is she joking? so I googled "egg nog in Australia", first things that pop up is multiple videos of "Australian trys eggnog for the first time" lol

      @@JenniferVeterans4truth lol I had no clue what was even in it until I watched this. We've had pre-packaged stuff on the shelf with milk the past few years or so but it doesn't seem to sell. Same with pumpkin pie it's not really a thing here either and honestly the thought of eating it doesn't sound appealing lol.

    Can I use honey instead of maple syrup?

    • @valerief1231
      @valerief1231 Před 2 lety

      Yes, especially if you prefer the taste of honey. It will change the flavor profile of course, but so does using maple syrup instead of sugar. I actually prefer using brown sugar, since the carbohydrates are all very similar, and high on the glycemic index. The flavor is my reasoning, my husband doesn’t care for the mineral taste of the grade B maple syrup, or the sulphuric taste of Sorghum syrup, I might try honey, and possible a dash of almond extract, give it that honey and almond essence, I can almost taste it, thanks for a yummy idea!

    The alcohol acts as a preservative. However, since I'm not a drinker I would just make sure the eggs were pasteurized because there is no evidence to suggest that even fresh eggs are void of salmonella. No offense meant, Carolyn. Not one little bit. Love your videos!

      I was just thinking about how I could use my fresh raw quail eggs because they can't carry salmonella! It would be a fun use for them too!
