Marvin, I'm so glad you appreciated the hard work of The Ohio State University Marching Band, known to Buckeye fans as TBDBINL (The Best Damn Band in the Land). I grew up in Columbus, graduated from OSU, and was employed there for 30 years. The members of the band work extremely hard to perfect each show. If a leader of a specific section of the band sees weaknesses. they will drill their team after regular practice has ended. Students in the band must audition; they are graded on their work and receive a credit or two towards their degree requirements. They travel to some games, but not all. Just yesterday they were at Penn State for the 2022 game. If The Buckeyes go to a Bowl game, the band will go as well. I wish they traveled in the luxury the football team travels because they a representing the university just as much as the players. The band will typically attend several functions prior to game day, march in the bowl game parade, then perform at the game itself.

The Ohio State University Marching Band has 228 members. All of them play brass or percussion instruments, and it is the largest band of that type in the world. "Dotting the i" at the end of the Script Ohio is the highlight of a sousaphone player's career. I know a man who switched both his intended instrument and his intended university just to have the chance to dot the i. He was fortunate enough to do it twice.

  • @cjoniak0202

My friend from high school "dotted the I". It's a emotional honor every 4th (or 5th) year Sousa get to do. After 2020, when the football season was cancelled, almost all the Sousas came back to have the honor

    • @dougbowers4415
      @dougbowers4415 Před 11 měsíci

Sousa was John Philip Sousa who composed lots of marches. A Sousaphone is the large tuba designed for marching. The person dotting the “i”’ is a sousaphone player not a Sousa.

    • @patrickn8355
      @patrickn8355 Před měsícem

Is that actually accurate? I really don’t think *every* sousaphone player gets that honor, but may be wrong. I thought it was a competition based thing and you had to earn it unless you’re a celebrity/guest dotting it

Hi Marvin, I have been enjoying your reactions and wanted to give a couple of answers to your questions. Me and my fiancé were lucky enough to be at this game. So much fun and definitely recommend night games at Ohio Stadium.
When the band comes out, for their entrance they play the buckeye battle cry. The lyrics are as follows.
In old Ohio there's a team
    That's known throughout the land
    Eleven warriors brave and bold
    Whose fame will ever stand
And when that ball goes over,
Our cheers will reach the sky
    Ohio Field will hear again
    The Buckeye Battle Cry!
Drive, drive on down that field
Men of the Scarlet and Gray
Don't let them through that line
We've got to win this game today
    COME ON OHIO!
    Smash through to victory
We cheer you as you go
    Our honor defend
We will fight to the end
    For O-HI-O!
They call where they spelled out Ohio with the band Script Ohio. They traditionally have a fourth- or fifth-year sousaphone player to dot the I. When performing Script Ohio, the band plays to the tune of Le Re'giment de Sambre at Meuse. The next song they played after Script Ohio was created was Carmen Ohio.
Carmen Ohio is Ohio States Alma Mater (School Song).
Oh! Come let's sing Ohio's praise,
    And songs to Alma Mater raise;
    While our hearts rebounding thrill,
With joy which death alone can still.
    Summer's heat or Winter's cold,
    The seasons pass, the years will roll;
Time and change will surely show
    How firm thy friendship O-hi-o.
Just a couple of notes. For home games, the band will typically play the opponents fight song and form that teams logo or whatever they do on the field. The people you randomly seen coming from the right to left just before the football team came out were people from Penn States coaching staff. Ohio States Marching band has gone to away games but not so much in recent seasons. They did go to the Ann Arbor for that game this year. They also did play at the Rose Bowl game. Here is a link to that pregame for you.

Some interesting factoids about The Best Damn Band In The Land (TBDBITL)... They use no sheet music. They have to memorize the music. All the band members compete for their spot every week. The OSU Marching Band is considered to be one of the largest, if not the largest, all brass and percussion marching band in the world. No woodwind instruments. They are considered a 'military' style band. Yes, they travel to bowl games and perform at halftime. Sometimes they preform the 'pregame' at the bowl game as well. Before each home game several hours before the game the band performs a kind of pre-game warm up performance called the 'Skull Session'. Around 13,000 people will fill St. Johns Arena near the stadium to hear the band perform the music they will be marching to at the game. The band has a very loyal following lol. Cheers!

The song they sang is actually the chorus, not the whole song, to the "Buckeye Battle Cry", it goes:
"Drive, drive on down that field

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to march in the band because out of the 5 instruments I play, they were all woodwinds and The Best Damn Band In The Land is a Drum and Bugle Corp. BUT, one of their members a while ago recorded what it's like to march for them. So if you want that experience,I've linked them down below. Band is singing fight song they played earlier, accompanied by tuba, who dotted the I. Mascot is a buckeye. Band does go with teams but they only do script at home. You need to look for alumni night when they had enough people to create four times on the field at once. Drum major struts, twirls baton and bends over backwards to touch hat to ground every game.

I am so glad you enjoyed the pregame! I would like to add a little comment. The stadium was enlarged in 2001. This project included lowering the level of the field. As a result the band ramp became significantly steeper. So now it is harder than it used to be for the band to descend the ramp at 180 beats per minute, but they still do it perfectly every time!

When the football team plays away games, the band goes along. Usually the half-time show is made up of visiting and home team's bands. Like in American baseball, visitors get the play first, and the home team's band goes last. It almost becomes like a "battle of the bands."

To answer your question if the OSU Marching Band goes with the team to away games they do but typically only to 1 away game per year, maybe 2 when OSU plays up at M*chigan.
When the band is on the field performing there are 192 members, 193 when you include the drum major. The total band size is 226 now. I believe they added an additional percussion member since I was in the band. If a more recent member / alumni of the OSUMB sees this comment, please correct me if I’m wrong.
The first song the band was singing in the Script Ohio formation was “Buckeye Battle Cry”, 1 of 2 fight songs OSU has, the other is called “Fight the Team”. The second song that was being sung is called “Carmen Ohio”, the Ohio State alma mater.

Marvin, this goes back fifty years that I know of. There is no other marching band that can come close to this. These people work all year, through any weather, and for miles and miles on end, all the while playing music with a precise pitch to go along for the ride. So let us top it all off with perfectly pressed uniforms every game everywhere. There are 225 people each exactly as the other and each depending on the other like a crew on a ship.

What I love about the Ohio State Marching Band is that they are always completely in sync while marching and playing at an extremely fast pace which sounds like 180 beats per minute, and sometimes it looks like they reach 200. They are marching on their toes with no flat footed, rolling walk which is why they're able to pull the shows off as they can move quickly into and out of formations. They do all of this while being very good musicians which allows them to have unmatched, creative half-time shows. The tradition never changes which is also why they have outstanding alumni come back every year and they march together at an early season game. I was at the Fiesta Bowl back in 2003 when rude Miami University fans tried to engage them when they were marching in the Fiesta Bowl parade and they didn't ever acknowledge it or react to it. It looked like they were staring way ahead of them with stoic expressions. So professional and outstanding.

In case someone hasn’t answered this part, after they finish Script Ohio and the 4th or 5th year sousaphone member dots the i and bows to both sides the full band sings the chorus of the Fight Song except the sousaphone player player who dotted the i, that member plays a solo of their part. It’s hard to hear in the video due to the singing and how they have to mic the whole performance. The band itself is 228 members with 192 marching during the pregame routine, 195 during each halftime performance, and 36 alternates. Each halftime performance is unique for each game with up to 10 shows a year. For example they have 8 shows for the 2022 season,of which 5 came in consecutive weeks. 1 1/2 to 2 hours before kickoff the band holds a final rehearsal open to the public called The Skull Session which has a pep rally feel and includes a walk through of the football team as they walk from the Woody Hayes Athletic Center to the Stadium. Each of the festivities are recommended must watch if you ever go to a game, as well as tailgating outside the stadium.

Nearly every school in U.S.A. has a fight song including High School which is played before games and after a big score in the game.
    This tradition goes wwaaayyy back.
I believe the association of sports with our schooling is something that is very different than in Europe.
It is how our athletes progress to higher levels and eventually to the professional leagues for many sports.
Whereas other countries they tend to start off in leagues, separate from their schooling.

Hey Marvin please react to some of the OSU halftime shows which are world famous... especially the TOP GUN show (which Tom Cruise himself tweeted about and sent presents and tickets for all to his new premier movie!)..Jurassic Park show is cool and Michael Jackson tribute is worthy if watching as well! So nice to see other countries involved and appreciating what these kids do bc it takes hours and hours of preparation. Cheers from Buckeye Nation!

When the band first marches down the field after the Ramp Entrance the crowd sings "Buckeye Battle Cry" but at the end of Script Ohio, the crowd goes silent and only the band sings.
Edit: Ohio State's full roster is 105 players. They all dress for home games (jersey numbers are only two digits so some are duplicated; those that are have one of the players on offense and the other on defense) but not all get to go to away games.

And songs to Alma Mater raise
    While our hearts rebounding thrill
With joy which death alone can still
    Summer's heat or winter's cold
The seasons pass the years will roll
Time and change will surely (truly) show
How firm thy friendship ... OHIO!
These jolly days of priceless worth
By far the gladdest days on earth
Soon will pass and we not know
    How dearly we love Ohio
We should strive to keep thy name
Of fair repute and spotless fame
So in college halls we'll grow
And love thee better ... OHIO!
Though age may dim our mem'ry's store
We'll think of happy days of yore
True to friend and frank to foe
    As sturdy sons of Ohio
If on seas of care we roll
Neath blackened sky or barren shoal
Thoughts of thee bid darkness go
    Dear Alma Mater...OHIO!

This is the school "fight" song they are playing during and right after the "OHIO" is formed.
Fight the team across the field
    Show them Ohio's here,
    Set the earth reverberating
    With a mighty cheer,
    Rah! Rah! Rah!
Hit them hard and see how they fall,
Never let that team get the ball,
Hail, hail, the gang's all here,
So let's win that old conference now.
    "Buckeye Battle Cry"
In old Ohio there's a team
    That's known throughout the land
    Eleven warriors brave and bold,
    Whose fame will ever stand.
And when the ball goes over,
Our cheers will reach the sky,
    Ohio Field will hear again
    The Buckeye Battle Cry!
Drive, Drive on down the field,
    Men of the scarlet and gray;
Don't let them through that line,
We've got to win this game today,
    COME ON OHIO!
    Smash through to victory,
We cheer you as you go!
Our honor defend we will fight to the end
    for OHIO
