  • Every IR illuminator emits a visible red glow, but the brightness varies by device. In this video, we compare four common IR devices to understand their visible signatures.

Phenomenal video man. Short, sweet, and straight to the point. As someone who is just getting into the NV game, content like this is genuinely appreciated.
Also I love Australian Shepherds (have two sitting on me right now), so more Kayla please!

thank you for this. I had been wondering about how ir lights like the surefire vampire would look if it was pointing at something from a wood line. awesome work all the angles and cameras!

Great video! I have a DBAL-D2; still not super worried but it’s something to be aware of. Passive aiming isn’t always possible but I do practice that a lot; another thing you can do is use a buddy lase to illuminate targets off-axis. This also gets you some contrast which will break things out better. But this technique requires friends and I don’t have any. So if you go active with a glow-y illuminator, prepare to engage and move to a new position I guess.

I noticed this on the illuminators i use. It makes me curious what technologies may already exist for other uses that could act as a tinted lens to hide the visible signature of NIR illumination, if such a thing even exists. I know government agencies would jump on some sort of adapter device that can be retrofitted to already existing NIR solutions.

Great video. Does an illuminator in the 940nm range produce a minimal red glow compared to 850nm?

I have not tested that specifically, but that does seem to be the conventional wisdom.

can you also comment, or do a separate video, of using an illuminator in the field - and how THIS WILL get you killed by an enemy using even the most basic CHEAP night vision setup? so many people think that having night vision with an IR illuminator means you OWN the night. you don't. running night vision or any other electronic device at night is only going to give away your position.

  • @youtubekeepsshadowbannin-ym4go

I wish you would have shown 940nm

I’m curious if thermals give off any kind of signature under nods. Have neither, just wondering?

Yes, nods can pick up the screen’s backlight unless the eye cup is perfectly sealed to the user’s eye.
