For episode one of this three-part series we take a closer look into the work that's required before the work. That is, the examination and testing process come into focus and we start to see a painting from the conservator's perspective. By using a series of tools and approaches we can start to discover facts about this painting that will lay the foundation for the work that's required to conserve it. A necessary but often hidden part of the conservation process this may in fact be the most important part of any project for it is here that we begin to truly learn about the work.

@@BaumgartnerRestoration Replying to your comment here such that you might see it in the crowd of the 1,500 others! You may wish to obtain an LED ultraviolet flashlight light source in addition to your fluorescent sources. The florescent sources are good for a diffuse overall view, but for the very detailed close up and almost microscopic work you do a more intense and spot focused source would be of great value. I HIGHLY recommend either a Convoy S2+ UV or Convoy C8 UV flashlight here both using a Nichia LED with an additional ZWB2 filter lens on either. The benefit here is that these sources produce exceptionally PURE and intense 365nm UV light without almost any visible light contamination and thereby allow the isolation of fluorescing objects from their background with very high contrast. A fluorescent source is necessarily contaminated by visible light at 405nm, while the LED is not. The difference is very dramatic when you see it in person. They're about $40 or $100 on ebay depending on which type you get. The knockoffs may be tempting but are not as bright or as spectrally pure as the convoys and invariably inferior in my estimation after having tested a few others in comparison.
One might wish that a certain person who pretend to be the most powerful man in the world would think like that... we, the people of the world, would probably be at another place in the management of the ongoing pandemic.

Quick note: It's Darmstadt. A weird name in German since Darm means intestine. But not Dammesadt. Sorry for the nitpicking but being a native of that city I had to point that out. Also: Frankfurt wasn't part of the Landgraviate of Hessen-Darmstadt. It Just happens to be the largest city in Hessen nowadays.
Julian is probably more glad to be corrected by a native than to be wrong and not know.
Intestine-city sounds freaky and indeed there is a surrealist painting depicting the town as a dissected intestine in a wooden box but... sadly, the truth is that the darm in Darmstadt has nothing to do with the word Darm. The DAR and the M may actually belong to a different roots.
(I am not a native Darmstädter but I did grow up in a town that is twinned with Darmstadt.)
Not gonna lie, i laughed out loud when i heard him say “Dammesadt“ 😂🙈
Darmstadt does not take its name from the intestines 😅 There are multiple theories about the etymological origins of the “Darm” part. It used to be called Darmundestat. Explanation range from a guy called Darimund, misspelling of a regional dialect, evolution from older indogermanic words, and the disproven river name theory.
Only fact that stays and is in fact pretty important to both Darmstadt and Frankfurt is that Frankfurt was never part of Hesse-Darmstadt. The house of Hesse-Darmstadt though had a close relations to a lot of royal European houses. England and Russia including.

i’ve probably said some variation of this in the comments of every video on this channel for the past four years, but it never fails to astound me just how much julian’s process is akin to medicine. I’m a veterinary student, and i feel like i just watched someone do their initial physical exam, using multiple modalities (naked eye, touch/palpation, uv light which feels!! much like a preliminary radiograph!!), take a history (the provenance), take detailed exam notes, and formulate a treatment plan (which can take many months to carry out!). julian even titrated the “dose” (concentration) of solvent to effect the way you would with certain medications. SO COOL. a painting doctor.

Who else saw the staples at 1:49 and said "Aaarrgghhhh!" And as far as it being a collaborative portrait you could tell right away. The head does not sit on the neck and shoulders comfortably.
