I think most of you are missing the point. It's heavily implied that Chara climbed the mountain to commit suicide. Chara is not responsible for the events of the genocide run. The player is. Chara is a scapegoat, alleviating guilt from the player, but no one made you press the fight button. No one made you kill anyone. The only thing the game forces you into is conflicts, but you can act and show mercy. It's possible to pass through the game up to asgore without even knowing how to use the fight button. Chara is not responsible. You, the player, are.
You cant save flowey nor asgore, tho. besides I always though that chara was more like a representation of the will to do a genocide. the curiosity or need to see what happens if you kill everyone. thus, chara is controlling the player, but not in game, but in real life, pushing then to see what would happen. after all, why do people do genocide runs if not?
then again, that's just my opinion o.o

However, I think you only get that if you also explore Alphys' true lab, on top of showing everyone you encounter MERCY.

That's why the game breaks the 4th wall so many times. That's why you control Frisk despite being a different person altogether.
Chara in my theory is a misunderstood character because they apparently hated humanity... I suspect they were an abused child and loves the Dreemur family because they understand Chara.

You know, when I first saw Chara and for the longest time afterwards I was absolutely terrified of them. They were literally pure evil, the embodiment of all things bad and wrong with, well everything. Pure. Evil.
Upon reflection however, that's how I first felt about Flowey as well. I was terrified! This little _thing_ that wanted nothing but to end all life and everything good in the world. But then I learned about Asriel and everything I thought about Flowey changed. I cared for the little flower and realized he was just an innocent child, victim of a cruel and unfair world. If I didn't know about Asriel, I'd still be terrified of Flowey....
Maybe Chara is like Flowey, but we never got to see their Asriel side. Maybe Chara just needs a second chance.

1. First human fell: Asriel save the Fallen human
2. Pacifist run: It's Chara together with Frisk's turn to save Asriel
That's a good way to see it. On the Pacifist run, Chara is basically returning the favor by saving Asriel much like how he saved him all those years ago.
Nice to know that the VA for Chara is voicing Chara for MOTI. You feel her emotions as she is talking.

I will never be convinced against my head canon. My head canon being that Chara was just a normal child, probably a victim of child abuse, that loved the Dreemur family to the point they'd commit suicide to get revenge on the species that hurt their new family. After dying with an "evil" intent, the concept of murder drowned their soul, being unable to pass on, and created the genocidal child we now from the game.

And besides, if Chara was always a so called "demon", the Dreemurrs would've mistaken them for an unknown monster like with Frisk at the end of the Genocide run.

I don't think anyone in Undertale is innately evil. However, everyone handles tough situations differently.
Sans for example handles his depression by almost shutting his emotions down completely, and only showing them during the Lost Soul fight where his words are shaking, because they are unable to hide their emotions there.
Papyrus handles rough situations by looking to the most positive result, or a possible positive outcome. During the genocide run, he doesn't give up on Chara, even when faced with death.
Chara was a kid. So unlike Papyrus and Sans, they didn't have much life experience prior to falling into the Underground. If they were raised believing you had to express yourself through anger, then it's no doubt they were just like that girl in the video you linked. And even still, her parent love her, so why wouldn't people as sweet as the Dreemurs love Chara? Though I don't think Chara would have gone as far as try to murder them while they were still alive, I do believe they had a lot of pent of rage that no doubt consumed their life force after death.
I was really moved when the voice actor for Chara said that i dont deserve this, I dont deserve you all. The text alone could not move me like the way the voice did. Why? Because they showed compassion and sadness with their words, and it sounded beautiful

My headcanon is Chara was mistreated as a child and that's why they hate all of humanity. The original plan didn't involve killing any monsters, but when Chara was "Betrayed" by Asriel who didn't want to hurt humans, when all Chara wanted was to involve Asriel in what they wanted to do, Chara felt betrayed by all monsters and stopped caring if they killed monsters or not.

A little bit on Chara - when they were kids, she might have been a bully torwards Asriel, but it's pretty common for kids growing up in abusive environments to bully other children - it's a sort of coping mechanism... it doesn't exactly mean they are evil... I do think Chara loved her adoptive family, but... consider that she had no access to psychologists, or anyone that would help her work through her past traumas...she was never able, or given the time to get over it.
That, coupled with the fact that none of the monsters were really aware of the mental struggle she was going through, and they constantly treated her as some sort of symbol of hope that would somehow solve the conflict with humanity and free them from the underworld. She was their fallen angel. Can you imagine the pressure she was feeling ? It's no wonder something in her eventually broke and she began to come up with that reckless plan to kill humans,whom she hated to begin with, that brought about all that tragedy.

zion basto ... I know they're not a girl but I've no idea how to properly use gender-neutral pronouns... I never learned that in my English classes, it's my second language... I get all mixed when trying to use them, so I just used "she" for the sake of simplicity. I actually did try to write it gender neutral at first, but it got so confusing!
I know it doesn't excuse her from the atrocities she commits in a genocide route - but I disagree with most people in the sense that she was ALWAYS a remorseless evil mastermind who plotted everything from day one...that absolutely everything horrible that ever happened was always her fault... that would be uncharacteristically one dimensional for a game and story that has proven to be anything but that.
+zion basto Their gender doesn't change anything. Do you really thing that a CHILD can be that evil from the beginning? There's a lot of speculation as to why Chara is the way he/she is, but to say that she's innately evil and inexcusable goes against the message that Undertale is going for. In the end, it wasn't Chara that forced Frisk to kill everybody. It was YOU, the player, that forced them to do those things. You could make Chara see the light and redeem her, or you could corrupt her/him further until she becomes the demon you see at the end of the run. And besides, murder is wrong, but there are far worse crimes than taking someone's life. You shouldn't look at characters in such a black and white manner. Chara is ultimately the product of the player's choices. That's why the genocide route is so atrocious. You murder everybody in the Underground, but you also Frisk as a puppet and corrupt the first human. You hurt everybody in a genocide route, including Frisk and Chara. You're the real monster in a genocide route, since you made the choice to go through with it.

If you read closely enough into Asriel's pacifist ending dialogue (where Frisk fell) you will find out that Chara is basically responsible for his death.

You know... When I was a child and when I was bullied by kids around (and even teachers) I was imaginaning all those horrible deaths what I could inflicted on those bullies. Well... What am I talking about. It's still has some kind of trauma on me. That's perhaps a reason why I enjoy sadistic and horror games (but anyway that doesn't mean that I don't like something cute and colorful). That's I'm trying to say? Stop thinking about childish good/evil worldview. Life isn't that simple.

Chara is a kid, who wanted love, and who hated humanity because of neglect. they, only saw the darkness that was within. They finally found someone who loved them, but, something was not right. Sure, the likes the attention, but, they just weren't used to it. They just didn't like it. They plotted murder, suicide, until, it hit them. If they could just get one of them to fuse, preferably Asriel, with them, they could destroy humanity. So, they found out about buttercups, and how poisonous they were if digested, and, "killed" themselves. They were going to kill humanity, but, Asriel was stronger. Chara was just a kid, who wanted LOVE, and who LOVEd humanity, only saw the light within.
I used to think Chara hated humanity because people thought they were a demon and soon found out they got rid of monsters because they were different and wanted to run away from it all.

I think I have a small theory on Chara. How she's not exactly evil, but something else.
The Underground, full of monsters, obviously portrays a fantasy in which it's possible for everyone to be friends, to be happy. Chara, clearly, came from the surface, where people are obviously not nearly as nice. Considering the fact she hates humanity, but in many different comics she questions why the monsters are being nice to her, the evidence shows that it's possible she had abusive parents, horrible siblings, or just a bad life in general. Hence why she's confused when everyone's so nice; She never got that kindness in her life.
Of course, there's no way of telling this is true, because there isn't any hard, exact evidence of her once having a bad family. It's only speculation based on how she reacts to people being kind, her originally harsh behavior, and her eventual demonic insanity.
Anyone else got any ideas?
I don't really want to fight anyone on this, but I feel like it needs to be said. frisk and chara are blank slates and are meant to look androgynous so that the player can more easily pretend to be them. so their gender is based on the interpretation of the player. when I heard that frisk and chara were noon binary and that it was canon I wanted to check and see if it was true outside of tumblr and redit, but I couldn't find anything like that in fact Toby gov didn't really want to talk about that stuff at all. so I found that them being non binary in canon isn't true, but that also doesn't matter since it's the characters gender is based on the players interpretation. I also think that gender is the least interesting thing about undertale as it in no way effects anything in the story of what you do in the game.

As I have stated before, my request is not about protecting the identity of the character, but to respect nonbinary people who have a rare opportunity to see a character that reflects their identity. And to not insist that something being nonbinary means "project whatever I want to onto this identity".
It's not the most important thing in the game, no. It IS important to nonbinary people not to constantly read that "nonbinary means whatever you want!"
Please respect my wishes not to continue discussing this as though it's purely theoretical, as it DOES affect people who are hurt by the terminology you use.

+Witch Doctor Marble It seems lost on a few people, but it's likely that Chara's name is taken from a Japanese abbreviation for the word 'character'. On top of Chara being an abbreviation used in game and manga fandom, one's moral character is an envaluation of your moral and virtuous traits or lack thereof (which is the game's main story mechanic). As such, it would be pronounced as in the word 'character', which in some accents will come off seeming the same as 'care-ruh'.

You know what makes me sad? all this is misgendering. Chara is not a boy or girl they are non binary. Please use their pronouns.
