Mr. Byrd achieves a great Bossa Nova performance as a jazz guitarist. I admire his style and mostly for his use of standard nylon strings Spanish guitar in jazz, as used in brazilian Bossa Nova. Outstanding, and a surprise to me that he was also a singer. I became a big fan of his guitar style.
Charlie became famous in DC, “one step down” I was 15 yrs old from Suburan DC , it was just fantastic. He and his brother both from Ricmond, Va area. He toured the American’s with “Bosa Nova” It was so exciting.
Huh! I didn't know Charlie sang - not bad. I remember Ginnie Byrd sang on an old album "Byrd in the Wind" I think. I also never knew Joe Byrd played bass. Thanks for the great post!
@Sabotage You are quite right, Sabotage--- Charlie Byrd much loved the quote of Duke Ellington; "No this or that...just, 'is it musical?" A bad paraphrase, my apologies. I met Charlie at a show in Orlando, Fl in '79...BLUBYRD had just come out on Concorde label and I was all of 19 and hoping my idol would autograph the album. Long story short: I was washing my hands in the men's room of the club between sets and Charlie is there, out of nowhere seemingly. I had the album under my arm and, with clean but wet hands, told him he was the reason I play guitar and would he mind terribly? Charlie beamed that great gregarious smile and said with his drawl, sing song intonations, "How nice...what is your name?" And for the remaining sets there I was in the front, no more than 5 feet away, and Charlie would give a little look, a slight nod, to the besotted young player who had brought an album with him as if I were a teenage girl seeing The Beatles--- What a gift he shared with us and always a soft spoken gentleman.
