All time favourite rock album. It has stayed with me since I heard it as a 13 year old in 1981 and has transcended its time and is as potent and poetic now as it was 43 years ago.

Hi. Thank you for this reaction. This is a concept album, dealing with the danger and habits of gambling. The title track is actually a 5 piece suite starting with part one and finishing with part two, with a running time over 16 minutes. So after listening to the whole suite part two is an even more satisfying closer.

    • @jimbobgreasemonkey

@@Chris-filosifer64 Hello and greetings from the beautiful Pacific NW (North Wet 💯🤣).
I came across my own original 1976 vinyl copy of the "Tales of Mystery and Imagination: Edgar Allan Poe" album the other. I got the chance to give it a listen and Orson Welles' narration is not on it. I have the remastered version with Welles' narration, as well. There are some subtle changes to the musical arrangements in the '87 version as well as additional post production enhancements that make the '87 remixed version a lot more interesting to listen to.
I don't know if it made a difference, but I bought my copy in Glasgow, Scotland. I was raised in Ayrshire, Glasgow is just under an hour away by train. Perhaps the U.S. pressing was different than the U.K. That is quite often the case. I have literally hundreds of albums where the U.S version and the European version have different songs, have the songs in a different running order, etc. Maybe this is one of those?

Part 2 has darker lyrics as the addiction has set in.
You have to do “Time”, which is a touching ballad. That was one of the two singles off this album (the other being “Games People Play”, which has a nice guitar solo). To me, that song was to AP Project what “I Won’t Hold You Back” was to Toto (on the Toto IV album). Both were quintessential ballads done extremely well.

This is a fantastic album. One of the best of APP. The truth is that all APP albums have a very high level, it is worth listening to them all. Especially the stage of the late Eric Woolfson who is the creator of this magic. For me the best of all is Freudiana, although this is signed with his own name, it is also fair that it is so.

Very much a concept album, as are most of Parsons' work, and the first 7-8 albums for sure. Would love to hear the full thing on Patreon, or any of his others as well. This isn't just about gambling, but in believing in luck (or fate) to get through life.

  • @spikeysnack
    @spikeysnack Před rokem +8

Some of their best work is in the rock opera or musical theater style, it has some of the best lyrics and melody.
Chris Rainbow (RIP) had this gentleness to his voice that could turn forceful at the right moment, lulling you in with a soft sentiment, then hitting you with a hard truth, very dramatic.
I especially like the brass and strings on the title track as well.
This album did very well commercially, but it is not a fan favorite. The single "Time" of course is one of their greatest hits, but people buying the album based just on that song were probably disappointed, as Time is the only song that sounds like it does.
There is a lot of disco going on, that turned a lot of FM rock radio stations off, but it did get them AM radio airplay. But of course mainstream radio had no idea how to pigeon-hole this band, so some stuff got played way too much, some never.
Its always a very mixed experience, as the styles shift so wildly. "Games People Play" is such a pop hit, "Time" is such mellow gold like a mystical mantra, and "Snake Eyes" is a jazz rock tune. "I don't want to go home" has got that 70s funk.
"Turn of a Friendly Card" is almost a hymn. A lot of bittersweet in this album, and a slightly sad overall theme, turns some people off, as it is not "good time music" even though it has a lot of uptempo beats mixed in. Sounds all over the place, and it is. Great guitar, both lead and rhythm and excellent piano passages throughout.
Some people put forth that "The Gold Bug" is one of their absolute best instrumentals, despite it being mostly unknown. It does have everything the band is known for all in one, that beat, sax, killer bass line, chorus/orchestra, guitar solos. Its just not long enough, I guess.

Turn of a Friendly Card and the Pyramid album both are worth a total listen .

  • @axeldefont-reaulx2812

On this song, it is worth noting the magnificent work of Ian Bairnson and Andrew Powell.
Ian Bairnson was the lead guitarist for Alan Parsons Project until the end, and had a big influence on the band's sound. Unfortunately, he just died less than a month ago.
Ian Bairnson created in 1984 a band KEATS with the other musicians of APP, except Woolfson. The album of the same name, produced by Alan Parsons, is really very interesting and has a family resemblance to those of APP 😊
Andrew Powell is a pianist and conductor who brings this medieval touch to this song. He also produced the first records of Kate Bush (in which Ian Bairnson also played, the guitar solo on Wuthering Heights is him), but also of Chris de Burgh among others. He also composed the music for the medieval-fantastic film "Lady hawke" with Alan Parsons, which is reminiscent of "The turn of a friendly card". 😊
And you should listen to Chris de Burgh's song "Crusader" from the same name album. You'll find a similar sound evoking an epic medieval era thanks to Andrew Powell. This song tells the story of the capture of Jerusalem by the crusaders and then by Saladin. 😊
    Other ideas to listening 😉
Talk Talk, "Tomorrow started + Renee" 😊
Barclay James Harvest "Play to the world" and "Gone to the Earth" album😊
Elton John "Funeral for a friend" or "Tonight", "Sorry seems to be the hardest word" 😊
Icon (Wetton & Downes of Asia) "The die is cast" 😊
Mike Olfield "To France + Poison arrows" 😊
OMD "Motion on heart + Statues"😊
Dire straits "Private investigation", "Romeo and Juliet + Love over gold" Alchemy live version 😊
Tangerine Dream "Song of the whale part 2" 😊
Simple Minds "New gold dream" album 😊
Downes Braide Association "Skyscrapers souls" or "Your heart will find the way" 😊
or some songs of Journey, Survivor, Saga, Joe Jackson, Fleetwood Mac, Alphaville (first album), Christopher Cross, Howard Jones (12" album), ... 😃😉
A big thank you and congratulations for your chronicles !!! Your chanel is so great😊 👏👏👏 from France

Thanks NicknLex for the reaction, as much as ai like many artists and groups I can get nearly everything I want out of music by listening to the 'Master's' albums. The APP have done a number of concept albums, starting with the first album based on Edgar Allan Poe as you know, and you should definitely play or listen to the whole album of 'The Turn of a Freindly Card' (perhaps his best album although I love all of his albums). Another concept album is 'On Air' about flight. Again thank you for listening to the best Engineer/producer there is! One last sad note is the sad fact that Ian Bairnson the guitarist on most of his great albums passed away recently, and we can only be thankful that we can still listen to him playing onthese wonderful APP albums.

I once heard a radio interview with Parsons, who said the concept behind the album isn't just gambling but also taking risks. The gentle and beautiful song Time, he said, could be the thoughts of either a sailor or an astronaut embarking on a journey. "Goodbye, my, love, maybe for forever ..."

AT LAST!!! Only Parson's Pyramid album is better! Hadn't realized that you've seen Alan live, so great to know.. Now you know why I'm a 'fan'.....This is probably the most Renaissance of their works. That said, "In the Lap of the Gods", from Pyramid, is going to blow your minds. A good amount of APP is also reminiscent of Broadway. Each album has one love song or lament, and they are heartbreaking and beautiful. What a great way to start the day, opening my laptop and coming upon this--with Lex too! Third for me behind these is Gaudi, their final album, then I. Robiot, one song of which you have already reactied to..

Talking about Renaissance, there are a lot of reactions on CZcams on the song Adagio by Laura Fabian, and covers of it, but in early seventies the band Renaissance also recorded a song, Cold is Being, on the album Turn of the Cards, based upon the Adagio in G Minor by Tomas Albinoni (1671-1751). You could make a magic cards marathon with songs from Alan Parsons of the Turn of a Friendly Card album, the Renaissance song mentioned above, the Steve Hackett album Voyage of the Acolyte (great album, based on Tarot cards, I would suggest Shadow of the Hierophant or Star of Sirius) and Mike Batt's album Tarot Suite (I recommend Imbecile, Lady of the Dawn or Losing Your Way in the Rain).

The Turn of a Friendly Card is a Concept album with its theme focused on the gambling industry and the fate of gamblers, with more than one reference to Las Vegas (e.g. "there's a sign in the desert that lies to west" from the title piece). Musically it's a more melodic and accessible album than its predecessors.

May I suggest you listen to some tracks from the Try Anything Once album from 1993? The opening 3 tracks 'The Three Of Me, Turn It Up and Wine From The Water' (also Mr Time) are all belters with the usual Parsons production excellence! Great line-up of musicians too....am surprised this album slips by the radar.

You both got it! Love that song too! :) This whole album is a good time. Thanks for this reaction.
The first part does set the theme for the entire album for sure.
It's well worth a listen. It is the only album of them that I own and listen to regularly. Not that I dislike the rest of them but this one was the one I bought on CD and never got around to the rest of them after I'd bought some of them on vinyl and then they were ruined by me accidentally and never replaced them.
Nothing wrong with listening to the rest of them a few at a time and not doing a full album reaction.

Thank you for a great reaction! Turn of a Friendly Card is a masterpiece of composition, lyrics, and production. "The game never ends, when your whole world depends, on the turn of a friendly card." A great insight whether you are talking about a game of poker or the other risks we face in living each day. It would be great if you could do the whole album, it's brilliant!

In this case it's french horns, but at a certain pitch range trombones can sound quite similar to french horns, so it's not always easy to distinguish. Often trombones support french horns in the lower octave to fatten the sound up. Trumpets and fluegelhorns in comparison sound much brighter. I think the orchestral portions of this album were recorded with an orchestra in Munich, Germany

It wroks beautifully bookending the Turn Of A Friendly Card Suite, which I'm sure you'll enjoy if you listen to the whole thing on or off-camera, or even better yet, the whole album!!
Yes, it is a concept album about gambling (in casinos and in life).

It was rather strange listening to these two parts back to back. I've never done that and probably would never choose to because it's part 1 and part 5 of a 5 movement piece. You really should listen to all 5 in sequence. This is a brilliant album, probably my favorite of theirs. The full album is a good idea, since it's a concept album. At the time this came out, a lot of us were album listeners, so there were a lot of concept albums where you were pretty much expected to listen to the whole thing. One of my all time favorite concept albums probably a lot of people don't even know. It's The Day The Earth Caught Fire by the band, City Boy. Their sound was a bit like Queen and ELO on this album. It was a brilliant album produced by Mutt Lange, who produced AC/DC's Back In Black among many other iconic albums from the period.

Yes, indeed. I expected Snake Eyes. Didn't happen. It really doesn't work back to back. We're missing the information in between. OK for us who know, I suppose, it least it gets the music out there.
