    Enjoyed your video! Just a thought, I had the same issue with a rifle like your first group. Everything seemed to be on target but impacts would go straight up. I cleaned up the barrel chanel on the stoock. Made a big difference! Im picking up a 6.8 Western this weekend. Winchester XPR

      I might have to try that. I want to take it apart to adjust the trigger anyway. Welcome to the #savethe6.8western movement, and thanks for watching!

    You should be able to improve things a bunch with reloading. I am bedding my XPR before I start load development myself. Hoping for luck with the Barnes 155 grain LRX.

      Absolutely! The Copper Impact bullet performs amazingly. I'm hoping it tightens up as the barrel breaks in. Thanks for watching!

    I took my brand new 6.8 xbolt out last week with those same copper impact loads. Averaged right at 2900 fps with a 24" barrel and grouping just a hair over an inch. I'm no expert marksman but I think those rounds will do the job for my rifle.

      @montanamusings  Před 3 měsíci

      Awesome, that's a respectable group for all copper bullets. I measured mine when I got back. The copper bullets were 1- 3/8ths. They ran about 2869 fps in my earlier video. Thanks for watching!

    You have to clean your barrel to get all the other fowling out you have to clean it to bear metal for the copper bullets

    • @montanamusings
      @montanamusings  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Yep, that's what Ron said in his video. I wouldn't mind sticking with the copper. Thanks for watching!

    Reload, and u can get it shooting. I just bought a new rifle. A Browning Xbolt Hells Canyon Speed Long Range 280AI. 1@8 26-inch barrel. I bought Berger Hornady Nosler and Sierra bullets. To start load development.162 gr and up to 180 gr bullets. Make sure your barrel is free floating. Barrel is not touching the stock anywhere.

      @montanamusings  Před 2 měsíci

      I ran a dollar bill down the barrel sides. It is free, but very close in one spot. Thanks for watching!

    Every monolithic performs poorly most often due to firing standard lead core prior. If using solid copper, it is best to clean the barrel to bare metal and do not fire anything else through it. That is not only what Ron explained in his video, but backfire tv also proved it on video. Best of luck 😊

    By the looks of your groups I'd say your receiver might be shifting in your stock whether it be from loose action screws or due to excessive room in the stock. Next time your out shooting pay close attention to the barrel in the in the channel to see if it shifts left or right

    • @montanamusings
      @montanamusings  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I'll have to check the screws before I go out again. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

    Just a couple of small tips to help.
    Take off your sling when shooting for groups. Will make a big difference. Second make sure you have support at the front of the rifle to stop a bit of the movement. And lastly pretty much all the factory 6.8 western is crap. Get some good reloads made up and you should do a lot better

    • @montanamusings
      @montanamusings  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I didn't have a good rear bag either. Thanks for the tips, and thanks for watching!

    When I test hand loads. I shoot lead only, and if I am glinna do copper I always run a few patches through the barrel first. I am currently testing aome makers copper in 160gr and hunter 162gr with some magpro woth .5 inch or better groups at a 100yards. The nosler didn't group well with staball HD and I could get a decent fps with magpro.

    • @montanamusings
      @montanamusings  Před 3 měsíci

      It looks like Magpro is a good powder for velocity and accuracy. Good luck, and thanks for watching!

      Try IMR-7828 and Retumbo. They both have delivered better accuracy results in my Winchester XPR 6.8 with 150 and 170 grain lead soft point and Ballistic Tips respectively, than I got from MagPro. Their slower burn rates are better suited for pushing the heavyweight bullets.
      MagPro is my go-to for 270 WSM and lighter bullets. Can't beat it for that. Thanks again for sharing your experiences with what I believe is an all around great cartridge.

    So, the rule was, you can chase copper with lead core but you cannot chase lead core with copper.
    My rifle shoots best with the Browning Long Range Hunter 175 SGK.
    The Winchester 170 Ballistic Silver Tip was not bad either.

      So, a little update. I had initially tried the 162 copper impact and did not like them because they did not group that well. I was getting about one to 1.2 MOA groups initially.
      After watching Ron Spomer and then backfire on copper Bullets, I cleaned my barrel down to bare steel and tried them again. I’m getting half minute Accuracy now, whereas I was getting more than that before.

    • @montanamusings
      @montanamusings  Před 18 dny

      My gun shoots the ballistic tips the best so far. I do want to use the Copper Impacts for my elk hunt. So I will be cleaning my barrel and giving them another try. Thanks for the update!

    That’s about how ABLR’s have shot in every cartridge I’ve loaded them in. Most consistently inaccurate bullet I’ve ever tested.

    • @montanamusings
      @montanamusings  Před 3 měsíci +1

      That's not what I was hoping for. I might have to go with the Copper Impacts. Thanks for watching!

    • @biggs8729
      @biggs8729 Před 3 měsíci

      ABLR's are hard to group. Bonded bullets in general have a bad reputation for accuracy.

      @@montanamusingsI pulled all my copper impacts for the brass and primers after a bad performance. I loaded up some 129 grain Barnes lrx the other day and loaded two of the copper impacts just to fowl the barrel with copper bullets before running the lrx. I had cleaned the barrel down to Bare steel in preparation for the Barnes LRX testing. Those copper impact bullets stacked one on top of the other. I didn't clean the barrel to Bare steel the first time I tested them. Maybe I need to do that and give them another go.

    If you’re going to shoot copper you should start with a clean barrel. For accuracy. Just saying

    • @montanamusings
      @montanamusings  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I should have started with the copper since my barrel was clean. Thanks for watching!

    You have made everyone dumber for showing this video, poor rest, sling in the way, plus looks like your front base is backwards. Never shoot a copper bullet over a traditional jacketed bullet , i can imagine your handloads and the quality.
