  • Many of us remember the endless days of childhood summers, filled with ice-cream stained t-shirts and baseball cards chattering away in bicycle spokes. Longing to relive the summer when he finally retired his old bicycle, Davin Reckow invites gasoline to the nostalgia party with the Kawasaki KE100.
In this episode of Redline Rebuild, he rejuvenates the two-stroke motorcycle engine that served up freedom and independence for many young riders. Davin overhauls the dual-sport’s drivetrain, preparing, once again, to hit those Traverse City, Michigan, two-tracks.

When I was a teenager, I was riding a Kawasaki Trail Boss (illegally) on the road and got chased by a cop. I got away by heading off road into a hay field and then pasture kind of like this video. I hid the bike, took my tee shirt off and walked home. Turns out, my parents were out sitting on the steps and witnessed the whole thing. My father complimented me on my escape and noted that it was a good move to take off the tee shirt. My cousin happened to be walking along the road and also witnessed this. After the cop lost me, he went back and asked my cousin if he knew who I was. My cousin said, “Never saw him before in my life”.
    Family. 😁

I found a junked 1978 KE100 back in 1997 with a seized up engine. bought it for less than $30 and it took me 3 months to source out all new old stock factory parts (engine parts, exhaust, wiring harness, switches etc.) and another 4 months to fully restore the bike on my own except for the machining and the sandblast and repaint of the chassis. Now, I still use it for offroad, trail and leisure rides and for some quick errands. i never had a single major breakdown at all.

Rode that thing a gazillion miles, wrecked it a ton of times, rode it on a National MX track and could clear a 100 foot step-up, even raced it (yes - 50 mile woods enduro style) and it never let me down. I took a small engines class in high school where we had to bring in our own projects. After we finished my buddy's snow blower we needed a new project. I remembered we had an old bike that had been sitting in our garage for 20 years. A 1976 ke100. It was parked because the clutch was fried. Took the jug off and cleaned it up, tore apart the clutch and replaced it with kevlar plates, cleaned out the carb, and cleaned up the bike. 9 years later it still purrs like a kitten and I love cruising back roads with it.

I am amazed by the amount of work it would take to make a video like this, and the end result is spectacular! I am so glad I came across this channel, which truly deserves lots of subscribers and respect. Glad to see another happily rebuilt 2 stroke back on the road :)

My favorite Hagerty time lapse so far! Riding around the closed gates onto backwoods paths are exactly what these bikes were made for!
I've got a 73" Suzuki TS185 in similar original condition that I need to do this to.

    Greetings from germany,
Please do some more motorcycles or two strokes.
You had a great choice in choosing your engines well in that series.

Had a bunch of 2 stroke dirt bikes in the 70s, always loved the sound they made. I'm afraid that men using tools is starting to fade...so many of my millennial daughters male friends seriously don't know the difference between a ball peen hammer and a claw hammer. Most can't safely change a tire. Thanks for the great video.

There's a touching KTM video that put a tear in my eye when watching. It's called "The Power Of Sound" 😍
