    Fantastic job, I couldn't stop watching! To the man that said he didn't want to sound like a cranky old man.....watch and you could learn something new. We got to see different tools used for different looks. When watching a you tube video, if you disagree with what you are seeing, stop watching. How about some encouraging words for this dude who has the guts to not only create, but to video it and share it with the world.
    Keep doing what you're doing, you do it well!

    That was great! As a new starter to leatherworking the cost is quite steep for all of the tools required, as you well know, and videos like this have helped me hondown what it was I really needed to get going. Tooling has been the final thing on my list, and whilst I have character stamps and use other tools in an improvisational way, I wondered if you could maybe tell me what core group of tools you would recommend? Or maybe what to avoid getting until I am more experienced? Thankyou!

    • @weeman_designs
      @weeman_designs Před 8 lety

      You can stamp some "ready made" items if you have a heat gun and a 1-2 ton press to press the stamp with. Heat the stamp with the heat gun and then use the press to apply the stamp to the leather. You don't really have many options when trying to work with pre finished leather items.

    • @JDOCustomLeather
      @JDOCustomLeather  Před 10 lety

      I think it was around 8-9 oz veg tan. I don't think you need to sharpen the swivel knife right out of the package. I've never sharpened my swivel blade and it's ceramic.

    • @JDOCustomLeather
      @JDOCustomLeather  Před 10 lety

      Stoney Lonsome Everything I use I buy at Tandy so you must think my tooling is crap, oh wait it's pretty good. I'm surprised you know so much for someone who is just starting out, or who has been doing it for 20 years.

    • @JDOCustomLeather
      @JDOCustomLeather  Před 10 lety

      Stoney Lonsome I'm confused, are you calling me 15 years old? I'm 37 so I'm not sure what you're talking about. If you're 15 then I suggest get a job and stay off of youtube. I'm not being confrontational I'm simply stating my opinion and facts. You can say I'm stuck on my ways and that I won't change but that is exactly the opposite from what I do. The things you to told me to do I've already tried years ago and have now found better ways. When I started out working with leather I was buying those scrap leather bags from Hobby Lobby that are chrome tanned leather, stitching with household thread, using a Black n Decker hand drill to drill stitching holes, sanding leather edges with a hand block sander, slicking edges on my wooden shop table outside, and selling my leather products outside my house on the sidewalk on an Ikea coffee table. I've since learned a few things. The fact that you say Tandy's leather is crap says a lot about you. You've obviously been spoiled in the leather field, when you start out like me, caveman style, you can make any leather look good or work for you. As for my skull that I tooled, you can talk all the smack you want about it, I've sold around 100 sheath with that skull and I will continue to tool it as long as that's what the customer wants. Seeing as how I have almost 40,000 views I'm thinking a few others like it too. You can think these are all insults but in fact I've never once insulted you, I'm just going off of what you say. Check out my facebook page and look at all the pictures of the different toolings I've done. I'm thinking you're one of those who does all the sheridan style toolings, while those look great they all way outdated and done to death. I do custom and original toolings. Either way I really don't know why you think I'm upset, I'm really not, I think I just handle criticism better than you, or maybe it's that you found a leather worker who's better than you.

    • @JDOCustomLeather
      @JDOCustomLeather  Před 9 lety

      Ya you're right, that was light brown, doesn't always come out that dark, sometimes different veg tan make dyes come out darker or lighter, I should have used an antique brown or tan.

    • @charlesmartin2330
      @charlesmartin2330 Před 9 lety +2

      This would not work on a leather jacket. He is using vegetable tanned leather. Jackets are made from garment leather, which is typically oil or chrome tanned. However, you could use this method on a thin piece of vegetable tanned leather, have it dyed close to the color of your jacket, and have it sewn on your jacket.
