My 20 year old Sulcata “owns” my garden. Half of everything I grow goes into his diet, so yes, he lives high on the hog. But beware, they are nature’s Caterpillar D8 bulldozer. If they want to, they’ll dig or push through fences that aren’t up the task. But they’re friendly and curious sun seeking companions who don’t bark which makes them perfect if you ask me.

I'm gonna have to agree 100% with you. We have several large sulcatas. We don't breed, we're a rescue. But I absolutely LOVE sulcatas. I refer to them as cows with shells. Constant intake of food and output of 💩. And they're hard on fencing, just like cows. Lol

I live in in the country in S Oklahoma. 4 years ago a couple box turtles showed up looking for water. I started looking after them, making sure they always have a place to drink fresh water, put safe fruit and veggies out to help their diet and prepare them for winter hibernation. Never tried to contain them as I don't want them to become dependent on me and they're wild so feel they should remain free. Every year the same turtles come back and usually bring a friend. I was surprised to discover they all have their own distinct personalities and quirks. Looking out for these little turtles is a true joy.

Hello, Sully owner from the great north. I rescued a year old sulcata who the owner just wasn't aware of how large these animals get and couldn't take it with them when they moved. I live on a horse farm so once it gets larger we are turning a pasture into a sulcata pen for the warmer months and we are going to convert an insulated 2 stall horse barn into the winter shed. It's a pretty large building now that we pulled the panels down for the stalls. I think a sulcata will have a blast in it and with our outlets we can hang plenty of basking spots and uvb. Pretty excited to set it all up and depending on the sex of this tortoise I might rescue 2 more sulcata.

I think this is a key to reptipe keeping. Quality over quantity. This goes for enclosures and animals. If you have space for 3large enclosure but you stick 10 small ones in that space, the animals suffer.

Recently my mother got me a red foot tortoise. It was from petco however and I'm not sure if it was wild caught or not, but have heard stories where they might be. I think they are around 4 years old because they are about 6 inches long. I'm obsessed and give them daily soaks because they get super happy and active when I do. They are also used to the routine and ask for food right after their soak. I'm excited because we will be building a huge enclosure outside for them since I live in the south with all sort of plants for the cutie as well as a custom indoor enclosure. I think my baby might have the starting of shell rot underneath from before we got them so any tips for a new tortoise owner on how to help are welcome. I'm already obsessed with these guys and am so glad to finally have a tortoise after wanting one my entire life; I hated losing my reptiles after 10 plus years with them and just can't take the heartache of pets that only last up to 20 years. I definitely want another one in the future, but want to get the little guy I have all set up and spoiled before then. Any tips on what you recommend most for plants are very much welcome.

My neighbor has what looks like a sulcate, but keeps ending up @ my redfoot compound. It gets out by recent construction tear-out, but is too big. Where can he be brought? He is very friendly, Monica

Out of all of the famous reptiles living in Florida (and there is a lot of them) Slinky is the one I would want to meet the most! He is way cooler than a snake!! And he may be huge but I feel that I would trust him. And it would be cool to see all of those tortoises you have too!. Of course I don't really travel... But here in WI you dont see any of this stuff.

Genuine question, what do you do for hurricane season? I live in south Louisiana and I just got a tortoise as a gift. It’s still a baby now but I’m already nervous for when it gets big and hurricane season comes around!! Thanks

Aside from naming your next monitor Binky, you need to make an area dedicated the curly tail lizards, they are way too adorable

Everybody says not to feed greens or food on top of the substrate or they might invest too much of it. But you are cutting that up right on it.

Just hoping to get a response... Recently my friends came across a Sulcata in the rural country crossing the highway.. In north central Arkansas... Will it survive the winter here?? We can get to zero at times! They were shocked to find out what kind of tortoise they had seen. Wish I could catch it!
