    I learned all three waltzes on piano and guitar, it took me ten years. Finally the sheet music was republished! I spent $150 on the conductor's score, mailed straight from Moscow. My hand shook as I opened it. I love this music so much. I was only six years old when Maestro Shostokovich died, in 1975. Oh, if only I could have met him. He did such massive symphonies, full of blood and fire and the fight against oppression, yet he produced these impossibly playful works. I am from Kentucky, and stand in awe of the Russian people, their literature, art, film, music, mathematics, science, and their indomitable spirit.

    Original name - Suite for Variety Orchestra, "Variety" = musical variety (music hall), or pops, or palm court orchestra... or, indeed "park music." Waltz No. 2 (the one re-played as an encore) is a lively, compelling work, very well played by this orchestra indeed.

    Es posible que, como sugieren musicólogos e historiadores de la música, esta Suite deba llamarse "Para Orquesta de Variedades". Una expléndida continuadora de la tradición de esas magníficas colecciones de danzas húngaras o eslavas que ha dado la música.

    Note that the original name was "Suite for Variety Orchestra" and the work was misidentified as the lost "Jazz Suite No. 2". The "Jazz Suite No. 1" wasn't very much like jazz, either; remember that D.S. lived in the Soviet Union and had little opportunity to hear American music. His jazz is more like an homage to Western jazz.

  • @terrificturk
    @terrificturk Před 9 lety +10

    If you're too young to remember the awful Soviet Union, remember that Dimitri Shostakovich was composing this music with a middle finger up in the air. The grim-faced censors were bent on shutting him up. The Jazz Suite No. 2--played here jauntily here replicated the middle finger beautifully! No wonder that, least while Stalin was alive, D.S. with his suitcase packed, just in case he was called to chat with the censors for a couple of years... What a great man D.S. was!

    It needs to be remembered, the following. George Gershwin was dismissed as a 'Jazz' composer. Prior to WWll he laised with Shostakovich, a serious music composer, in order to gain new methods. Gershwin went on to compose his Concerto for Clarinet. OK so far?
    This was a two way street. Serious music (or classical) as per DS is not dance music.
    Listen carefully and you will hear Gershwin in DS's Jazz suite.

      The second alto saxophone was extremely out of tune when he made his entrance. He did not appear to realize or correct it. While it is true the note he was playing is one that is consistently sharp on all alto saxophones, this is no excuse, as any well trained saxophonist should would be aware of this tendency and would compensate for it. We see a similarly slipshod performance when the trombone enters at 15:15. These issues reflect poorly on the quality of this orchestra.
