    Mr. Carlson's experience with tubes and tube equipment really shows. Not many people could look at the tubes and immediately know that they weren't in the right place and then know which ones to expect in the various stages of the radio.

    • @hestheMaster
      @hestheMaster Před 3 lety +1

      I always go by a schematic to make sure stuff is where it should be. Here the components were replaced by substituting modern replacements but failed to
      note where the tubes went and bodged the radio up in a failed alignment. It also helps to take lots of photos before and after of the work while progressing
      with a shotgun job of component replacing especially around the tubes. Sure way to solder a part to the wrong place.

    • @pneumatic00
      @pneumatic00 Před 3 lety +2

      There is a subtle, but very important lesson involved here. Imagine how long you could spend troubleshooting that radio with the tubes in the wrong sockets? What would you do, knowing that it had been worked on? Even if you didn't have the back-story, you would see those bright yellow caps underneath and know the set had been worked on. *Once you know that, you have to know there is literally NOTHING you can take for granted*--but again, does that mean you have to check every wire, every solder joint...? I myself have worked on plenty of AA5 radios (mostly the 7-pin tube versions and this was 30+ years ago) but still, there for sure was something odd about the audio out tube and rectifier right next to the tuning cap. I will admit, it didn't jump out at me right away. I *think* I would have tried to get a schematic online which would probably have the tube layout and etc; etc; etc

    • @hestheMaster
      @hestheMaster Před 3 lety +2

      @@pneumatic00 Never assume anything!
      Just because someone worked on a radio and you see new parts in the underside don't assume they replaced a part with the right replacement part. Go over every circuit in the schematic to make sure it is right, make sure parts are where they should be and wired correctly to tube sockets. I give you an example of something I found in a newly acquired radio from 1948. A resistor was going into a solder joint and I wiggled it. It was just loose going through the joint of solder !

    This takes me back to my days on the farm in the 1950's when I used to watch my father as he overhauled engines to make extra money from the neighbors. He taught me a lot about mechanics, and, of course how to farm. One thing he always drilled in about working with farm equipment was to insure that all the screws and bolts were tight before you began a days work. So, for example, if you were going to mow, you went over the mower with a wrench and screwdriver and tightened everything so it would not work loose as you mowed the fields. When I first began tinkering with radios in the early 1960's after we moved to town and got electric power, I transferred that learning and messed up the radios I worked on by doing the tighten the screws thing after opening up the cabinet. I quickly learned that this advice does not transfer to electronics. I guess it takes a few screw ups, especially if you are working, as I did with no advice from anyone in the know such as is available today with the many how to's available on CZcams.

    RCA model 65X1 from 1948. Tube compliment : 50L6/35Z5/12SA7/12SK7/12SQ7 . From the label that was on the bottom,
    " For Finest Performance USE ONLY GENUINE RCA RADIO TUBES" I found Mr. Carlson's ability to find tubes put in wrong places fascinating and I hope whomever did that
    never turned the radio on! But that person did mis-tune the radio and screwed it up! Definitely needs an alignment. Work was only half way finished.

When tens or hundreds of thousands of people watch a video its an absolute certainty that a small but significant number of them will be one or more of: in a terrible mood, not very bright, clicked by accident, completely or partially misunderstanding something that is said, actually clinically mad etc etc. In short, when, as I write, the like:dislike ratio is around 200:1, there is no need to worry or even pay attention to the 1.

    I mean... that is just restauration/repair 101 - "when you take the thing apart, take notes / pictures on which thing goes where, so that you can put it back together afterwards"
    Maybe he just wanted you to see how well he did with the recapping of the radio ^^

      Back before digital cameras I would take pencil and paper and write lots of notes and special drawings of complex areas only the author could discern. Place screws and small parts removed in baby food jars with labels as to what went where. Been working on this kind of stuff since the late 60's, still do it for fun and still learning new things, that is why we are here watching Mr. Carlson.

      I thought about it too. Make no mistakes with changing caps and resistors and fail with tubes? No way. Except this was done by different people.

    Amazing channel. I normally watch at night when there is nothing new on TV (that means, every day). Some time ago you said you would do a "Bio" video. Love to hear about you gaining all this knowledge. Very impressive. From the oldest tube thingy to the newest SMD designs, you seem to know it all.
    Also, your lab is a treasure trove.
    Thank you for your sharing your videos/knowledge with us!

    RCAs of those years usually had a split ground - a virtual ground for the circuitry coupled to the metal chassis with a .1uf coupling cap. Replace the coupling caps with a Y type for safety.

      My radio. lab is nothing but vintage 1950’s and 60’s test equipment, except for my scope. The scope is an early 70’s Leader 50 Mhz model. I added peaking coils to the vertical amplifier to extend the overall scope response. For AM radio it does the job. In the 1950’s and 60’s all we had were 5 Mhz scopes.

    Yes, I would like to see you finish the job. I screw drivered one of these once and have fond memories of listening to this little table top set. I also had to carefully repair its antenna that had deteriorated. That one is as clean looking as mine was. For a second there, I thought mine fell into your hands but I dont see my antenna repair. I wish I hadnt sold mine years ago.
