  • In this video , I described my time , as an oncall/support Engineer at Amazon. I explain the entire oncall process , how did we use to resolve customer issues , did we have to sacrifice sleep , and what were the learnings. Oncall is something every SDE has to go through while working for Big Tech. Views and Experiences are solely mine.

Very informative. Always wondered how Amazon/Big tech structured this part of their business.

    Some questions:
    - my understanding is Amazon gives no financial compensation for on-call engineers but when do they expect you to roll into work (virtually or not) the next day even though you were up all night fighting fires, or do you get some additional time off in-lieu of time spent actively working outside of normal work hours? I know that you're still technically on-call but maybe the time off happens after your on-call ends?
    - do you arrange to have the secondary in a different timezone so there is more chance of a fast response at night? With and US and India off by ~12 hours you could have the primary and secondary alternate every 12 hours can get 24/7 coverage using engineers during their day time (or at least not in the middle of the night)
    - how often would you page your secondary to get help - or do you have to deal with everything yourself?
    - what kind of response time is expected for Sev 3, 2, and 1 alerts before the pager rolls over to the secondary and then the manager?
    - in the code you manage are you allowed to create alerts that page some other team? Eg. your API uses a database or some other 3rd party API and your code starts getting errors accessing it - can you just send those alerts directly to a database team or the other API owner? Or do you own every issue until you've looked at it and manually escalated it to another team?
And yes, like a lot of others the background music is very distracting. If you can remix this video and repost I think you'll get a lot more engagement. But thanks for sharing your experiences.

You may try again without the noise. It is annoying and distracting because it is much too loud. And no, it is not music but some sequence of sounds disrupting the sound of your voice. So, please, if you want to be understood, then drop the noise.
