  • The Commonwealth CA-13 Boomerang was a single-seat fighter that saw service with the RAAF during the Second World War. Join me in this video as I take a look inside the box of the recently reintroduced Vintage Classics Commonwealth CA-13 Boomerang plastic mode kit in 1/72 scale from Airfix, and see how it holds up today . . . .

Decals 11 and 12 are the logos of the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation.
Brief historical note: CAC went on to build the Avon Sabre (which Airfix should do), the Bell 206B Kiowa, the Aermacchi MB 326 (wouldn't hurt Airfix to do that too), and acted as a subcontractor on the Mirage IIIO and F/A-18 Hornet. It was bought out by Hawker de Havilland Australia, and was subsequently bought out by Boeing.
On the Avon Sabre: Australia's Sabres had a different fuselage and armament to the aircraft produced by North American and Canadair. They were, of course, powered by the Rolls Royce Avon, and armed with 2 30mm Aden cannon. Later AIM-9Bs were fitted under the wings. The Avon, being more powerful, lighter, and fatter than the J47 required a completely redesigned fuselage. They served near Vietnam at RAAF Ubon in Thailand. After replacement with the Mirage IIIO, the survivors were sold to Malaysia and Indonesia. The latter being an irony because the Indonesian acquisition of MiG-19s and MiG-21s prompted Australia's purchase of the Mirage IIIO. The 1965 abortive coup in Indonesia meant the destruction of the Communist Party of Indonesia, and that put the MiGs and the Tu-16s out of action. Two Avon Sabres are still flying, both in Australia.
Back to scale modelling, unfortunately the modelling community has been poorly served where the Avon Sabre is concerned. There are a number of kits of J47 Sabres with Australian decals. Make of that what you will. Full Avon Sabre kits are non-existent. What is available are conversion kits. There are three. High Planes Models has 1/48 and 1/72 conversion kits for the Fujimi/Academy/et al model. If ever they have stock, they are marketed with a full Academy kit. Tasman Model Products has a 1/72 conversion kit. In each case, the conversions are basically the same. A replacement fuselage sprue is provided. The rest of the kit assembles as normal. Availability of these conversion kits is extremely low, and on eBay the asking prices are very high.
So, here's the big idea - a new King, a new age for the Commonwealth. What better way for a company like Airfix to mark this with new Sabres. Commonwealth Sabre users included Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Pakistan, South Africa, and the UK. British and Canadian Sabres made a fine showing at Queen Elizabeth II's 1953 Coronation Review. Only the Avon Sabre would require major changes. Airfix's 2010 1/72 Sabre would be ripe for conversion. It would require the replacement of a single sprue because the fuselage is split vertically, with each half on the same sprue. As for their 1/48 2021 tool, it would definitely be a much bigger job.

It's a fair review. Personally I really like these old kits because of the challenge. Even if there is a better alternative I still go for the airfix because there is a greater sense of achievement than simply putting perfectly made parts together. I am currently doing a nostalgia build of their F5 freedom fighter which is a pretty bad kit but I am having fun turning it into something decent and for me that's what it's all about.

I have a Boomer from 1976 that I've had for over forty years that I've never built. At that time I was buying more kits than I could build. Just started getting back into the hobby about three years ago when I was stuck at home a lot due to co-vid. The decals were quite yellowed, but I've been sellotaping a lot of my decals to my window to get the sun.

As an aussie kid of the '70's I really loved this kit as there was so little Australian themed subjects around in model form and my built kit took pride of place on the dresser in my room. Looking at it now, yes its old and basic and I agree they are over priced aa reissues. That all said, I've got the same reissue as you reviewed and plan to build it this year. :)

As someone who has built about 10 of them. Yes! As at one point it was the only kit of the Boomer and now is a nice cheap kit for the beginner and not as complex or detailed as the Special Hobby offering. Looks good when built which is the most important part.

Try to find out about the restored Boomer flying in the US. I've been up close to a restored bird here in Australia and seen it fly. Quite amusing watching a Hornet,Sabre, Meteor, Mustang,P40 and Spitfire trying to slow down to Boomer speeds.
At least the Wirraway could fly in formation.

There's one of these in my local hobby shop which I've actually wanted to get but I wasn't sure... now I think I should procure it as they have improved all aspects of this kit, from the decals to the actual tooling which I have learned they cleaned up and added some slight details on the wings and fuselage. Brilliant review though Matt, I'll go and procure the kit that's on the hobby store shelf soon. It looks like a decent model to build and I'm a retro kit maker anyway so this'd be perfect for my stash..

The landing gear can be raised. For some reason this was omitted from this version of the instructions. The original instructions included on Scalemates show how they are fitted. It’s listed as special instructions together with fitting the drop tank. Parts 22 and 23 are omitted for a raised undercarriage.

These kits are clearly intended to cash in on the nostalgia of middle-aged modelers like me, the worst part is that even knowing this I enter the trap gracefully and happily

  • @767bob
    @767bob Před rokem

This kit does build up nicely and for a more experienced modeler, scratch building the cockpit and building up the wheel well can easily be done. The engine can be spiffed up or replaced with one made of resin. For the price, we now get brand new decent decals. Buy it now because when this run is done, the price will usually go up and cost double to triple what it is being sold for now.

  • @Andy.Gledhill.Models.

Don't look too bad for its age. Have to agree with you on the price though. Mind you, I did see that some of the other Airfix 1/72 scale Vintage Classic aircraft are even more expensive than this one. EG the DHC Beaver is £15. Which is a bit bizarre, considering I could buy the Airfix C47 Skytrain for less than £30. That is a more recent tooling and a far larger aircraft.

I nearly bought this kit but opted for a second hand one due to the boring decal schemes, the older ones have Suzie Q, which is flying and a couple more interesting arts. They went for the very first schemes which are kinda ok but not very interesting and what's with all the stencils? I'm glad I payed the same price for a much more interesting second hand one. You can have it in flight with the wheels no problem though strangely it doesn't say in the instructions but you can do it if you want, I did.
