First song I learned to play on guitar... taught to me by my Dad when I was a very young boy... I’m 54 now and my Dad has passed 18 years ago but I can still freshly remember the moment we had together while he was teaching me this song... missing my Dad so much..
💙💙💙
I'm sorry for your loss
music helps.
condolences.
This was one of my first as well to play lead. Everything about the song has it`s merits.
😭😍
I could never explain how much I love this song
You should listen to Bruce Springsteen " The River". Try and explain that one as well. 😁
I only heard this a few years ago for the first time, and it is exceptional. Really touched my heart.
I feel you
I played in a band and I swear when we did this song the singer sounded more like Rod than Rod does, people thought it was a recording of Rods vocals.
No one could!!!
Some songs just never get old; This is one of those.
Who else is enjoying this fabulous hit in 2022, with me. Rod stewart, you were a marvel to watch.
Yes, I...
Absolutely

What a sweet little boy....such a loving family! Thank you, Rod .....this is my ," go to" video...always! ❤
This is just an amazing song; perhaps the best of his career. So stirring with his vocals, the lyrics and the arrangement. And my goodness those guitar solos. This is that song that lasts for over six minutes but you don't want it to end.
This is his best.
ds song remains Dsame forever more mean lots to me, rewind repeatedly hear in my ears
One of the most meaningfully worded songs of Sir Rod.
I always thought the chorus doesn't fit the verses but there you go.
The reason why I love to listen to this song over and over again
This song IS the 70s. A masterpiece, takes you right back to the right days.
Right days?
absolutely!
I feel you
Remembering this one the first time around and we lived it without Smartphones in hand .
My lifelong theme song, I can relate my teenage years to EVERY line in this song, especially the line "My dad said we looked ridiculous" which is exactly what my father use to say! I am now 64, and it is STILL my favourite tune of all time.
... always had this one close from Rod Stewart...
I have the same feeling about this song, I'm 65 now and I broke a lot of hearts.
I wish I knew then what I know know.
Dam yall are grandpas and grandmas now😞
the best years of my life. and great music. 70s forever.
Yep - “a lot of promises made in the heat of the night and creeping home before it got too light” - my high school years in the mid-late 70’s. Thank goodness social media wasn’t around.
What makes this song so great is that he really is pouring his heart out in a song. You can tell it's something he was really going through. No professional hit writer can just come up with that.
For sure
Rod has a gift of writing lyrics and know how to sing them.
Bless him for that . ✌🙏
Rod wasn't the original writer to this song .. was a young man in his 20s who wrote it about losing my mother and he sent it to rod
But rod sang his heart out and made it his own
@@amandalynkuklawski1923 Thanks for the info!
Can't resist Rod Stewart, even after all these years. Fell in love with him and his music during the 70's when I was in my 20's. Now I'm in my 60's and I still think he's sexy. Rock on, Rod!
Gotta agree with those lyrics. I am in my 70 and love rod and his music😊
Probably Rods best song. Heard it played at a funeral once, wasn't a dry eye after the song finished.
I was 15 when my late Mom introduced to Rods music, I am 64 now and Rod is still captivating audiences. The man is a powerhouse. I have been lucky enough to have gone to 10 concerts and I have a soccer ball. Plus he is aging like a fine wine. ❤❤
I can't recall how many thousands of times I've played the solo... It's in my book the most beautiful songs and guitar solos of all time. I'm astonished how little space this song has in Rod's legacy. I mean, just listen to the crowd sing along at every live performance... Underrated!
And there's a real story in the lyrics that gives another dimension to this masterpiece!
65 years young here, Rods music got me through some tough times...made me smile and cry as well...it is very hard for me to even pick a favorite....Sir Rod Stewart I should say....
Thinking of my brother today. This song was so him and all the other Valentino’s of the 70’s. God I miss him so much..RIP
Rod is one of the best solo artists, EVER, even at his tender age.
Love all his songs, but this is one of my favourites, simple lyrics that I can relate to and good guitar work.
One of the most overlooked guitar solos ever.
To NP naked women
Agreed. Smooth, powerful, soulful. I love it.

The guitsr solo is fantastic, from accoustic transcending to electric.
One of his most underrated songs. I love the opening line, "Ever since I was a kid in School, I messed around with all the rules."
Underrated? What are you smoking.
I agree 💯... also "You Got a Nerve", but this is my favorite
One of my dads favourite songs, he loved the guitar solo in the middle and used to turn the volume up flat out when it was just him and I in the car, he sadly went in may but i still love listening to it xx
I bet your dad listens to it loudly everyday in heaven and nobody complains!
One of the best guitar solos I've ever heard
2023 and still listening this beautiful music. old but gold

Yup! This was music!! Not like that crap today.
Was my crush in 79
My life story. My absolute favourite song ever and I’ve listened to music intently for decades.
Such a highly reflective and affecting song. It brings tears.
One of the most beautiful guitar solos ever...
One of his masterpieces in my opinion. Explains the growing up process brilliantly...surpassed only by "The Killing Of Georgie"...love you Rod!
Love that song Killing of Georgie
Amén 🙏
Definitely, specially the 2nd part. John Lennon knows it
Mandolin Wind is up there too.
You're In My Heart, is one of my favorites of his tied with this song and his cover of First Cut is The Deepest. Those are his 3 best songs, Killing of Georgie is 6th to me.
The story of my life. It all started when I was in junior high and followed Rod from his hair cut to the way I simply live my childhood to adolescent. Too much fun, alcohol and women. Am now sober and all by myself after four (4) unsuccessful marriages. Am happy though every time I listen to your music my friend. No regrets in life, specially now that I found Jesus and living the last few days of my life with HIM 😊🙏🏻❤️✝️🎶🎈🥂ACT 1 IS OVER !!!
C'est la vie!
Jesus rocks
Amen brother
Lovely message. Take care with love from England.
Sometimes love just flows out of your heart like a wild hors and it s hard to rein it in. Jesus knows your heart and ours too.
the lyrics, the rhythm, the music..this is 70's...this is us...
Mom used to always play this on the car radio, amazing song and vocals!
Found it because I vividly remember the lyrics and I still like it.
Mom, Brother, Wife, and 1st daughter suck. 2nd daughter might have a chance. Because she is married to a real man.

My dad passed away 3 months ago. And Rod Stewart was his favourite artist. His music hits harder now.
Sorry for your loss! RIP Dad!
Beautiful lyrics, voice, man, melody, and of course, one of the greatest acoustic/electric guitar solos.
This is one of my favourite Rod Stewart songs. The lyrics are so real, so him. Guessed what! I just got my concert ticket today. He will be performing in my country this coming March 4, 2024. Yeahhhhhhh!!!!! This has been one of the items in my bucket list. I don't have to crack my head anymore about saving for flights and hotel to attend his concert in UK. I am a happy bunny today. 🥰
I'll try for Las Vegas
I remember I was 9 years old when my father used to sing with with his guitar.. now I'm 35 and still my beautiful memories with father always lingers in my heart especially when I heard Rod Stewart Songs.. missing you Papa
Really a masterpiece of English-language music. Rod came out with a song full of emotion and musical talent, that deserves to be remembered, and often played.
Não adianta, você realmente é e continuará sendo o melhor pra mim.
I love this song along with all Rods Greats. I love the line 'My dad said we looked ridiculous" very heartfelt and nostalgic ❤

What a song, what a singer, what a guy! Always brings a tear to my eye this song. Love ya Rod.

Браво Род,сколько уже лет слежу за тобой,наслаждаясь твоими песнями,твоей неувядаемой жизненной позиции,твоему ироничному отношению ко всему вокруг происходящему,твоей вечной молодости.
I've just heard this on radio and it's so good, together with the rainy weather

When I was in grade school I really like his song “ I was only joking”, and I start learning to strum my guitar until I perfectly know the chords till then now and then still loved all his songs!
since my high school,, i'm still listening this song until now.
Me too.
The mid to late 70’s is Rod Stewart at his best. The album’s he put out were classic Rod, and his music will hold up against anyone else’s at the time.
I want this played at my funeral the words sum up my life exactly
got that right
this song will never get old
I had this album. This was my favorite song. I played it over and over again. I was so in love with Rod Stewart. Good memories. I grew up in an abusive alcoholic home. I really related to the lyrics about not knowing how to give love. And just kind of floating through life. Incredible song writer.
Glad you came through it Susan today I think rod was one of the best at being real in life a lot of his song's have meaning to a lot of people me included he just brings music to true Life hope you're ok now

To this day. Good o'l Rod still hasn't let me down. I've seen him live 20+ times. And that's counting the Faces as well
What a beautiful song.
Ever since I was a kid in school
I messed around with all the rules
Apologized, then realized
I'm not different after all
Me and the boys thought we had it sussed
Valentinos all of us
My dad said we looked ridiculous
But, boy, we broke some hearts
In and out of jobs, running free
Waging war with society
Dumb, blank faces stared back at me
But nothing ever changed
Promises made in the heat of night
Creepin' home before it got too light
I wasted all that precious time
And blamed it on the wine
I was only joking, my dear
Looking for a way to hide my fear
What kind of fool was I?
I could never win
Never found a compromise
Collected lovers like butterflies
Illusions of that grand first prize
Are slowly wearin' thin
Susie, baby, you were good to me
Giving love unselfishly
But you took it all too seriously
I guess it had to end
I was only joking, my dear
Looking for a way to hide my fear
What kind of fool was I?
I could never win
Yeah, baby, woo
Now you ask me if I'm sincere
That's the question that I always fear
Verse seven is never clear
But I'll tell you what you want to hear
I try to give you all you want
But giving love is not my strongest point
If that's the case, it's pointless going on
I'd rather be alone
'Cause what I'm doing must be wrong
Pouring my heart out in a song
Owning up for prosperity
For the whole damn world to see
Quietly now while I turn a page
Act one is over without costume change
The principal would like to leave the stage
The crowd don't understand
One of Rods best songs great record
The voice, the soul of emotion ......... my heart, my heart .... and now I'm 79 and just grasping this wonderful Man and his many Talents xoxo

Hi I received this LP on my 16 th birthday ( Footloose and Fancy free ) ❤❤❤❤❤ still love it ❤️🙉❤️❤️😁😁💯
Michael. this was more than a theme song, it hit on so many facets of growing up in a time of freedom. "My dad said we looked ridiculous" , how many times did we hear that... "but we broke some hearts"! One of those snog's you sing along with knowing every word!!
My dad's favourite expression was 'you know you look ridiculous don' you'? This song is so relatable. I agree with you.
And one we'd sometimes snog to ❤
