In the aftermath of the Trump regime, we're discovering that bureaucrats and career military generals, grey men with uninteresting jobs, quietly worked behind the scenes to prevent a coup which could have overthrown the world's oldest democracy. Babylon 5 was very good about showing the ugly reality of both war and politics, and how destiny often balances on the actions of ordinary men and women who are willing to put principle ahead of ambition.

You can see a fleeting moment of hesitation from the XO has he processes what Sherriden is asking from him, the ship and it's crew, and then his professionalism kicks in. Well to be fair if they said nothing they ran the risk of being fired upon since they were considered an enemy vessel. In any case it was nice of them to redeem the Apollo, most of the time we saw Sheridan manage to recruit ships that were initially uneasy with following Clark. But the Apollo and its crew were intended to be 100% loyal to Earth it was only when it was revealed that Clark was prepared to destroy earth and its "enemies" were willing to risk their lives to save it that he chose to act. Not because he supported Sheridan's rebellion, but because his duty was to protect the planet.

@@ReaverLordTonus They stayed 100% loyal to earth until the end. They SAVED earth from being destroyed. They weren't sworn in for President Clark, the argument of the captain of the Apollo was just, that the military has not to decide who rules the civil government and therefore he deemed Sheridans run towards earth as honourless.
It's the typical dilemma of a military person: Do I stick to my government, even if I KNOW it is illegimate (although the Clark Regime was still legimate in power, as the last election was only three years beforehand, Clark was in his legal tenureship, he just went straight towards dictator when he came into power) - or do I start a rebellion.
it's the dilemma people like George Washington had: To they stick to their oath to the King of England - or do they help the upcoming rebellion in the colonies. When Washington joined the rebels, he knew that it meant that if the british troped capture him it means death for high treason.
And of course the communication is short between them: They are in a combat situation. Any unnecessary communication can be futile. The captain of the Apollo really did a great manouevre there, don't forget, he even managed to come out of hyperspace exactly in the angle he needed to hit that specific platform. If they even would have come out in a different angle, they wouldn't had enough time to turn correctly and shot the platform before the Agamemnon hits it.

I think what is so telling here is the level of commitment we see from the crews of the ships around Sheridan. We know that in many battles the forces fighting for Clark did so largely only from fear. That when put into a pinched position they would surrender, sometimes without even firing a shot. Many of the crews arrested their own Captains rather than carry on. Yet here in this fight we see the Earth Force loyalists led by Sheridan simply throwing themselves on the defenses. Pilots flying into the paths of missiles to screen the capital ships, the capital ship charging forwards to engage the platforms. When faced with a death or glory moment, Captain Hall's crew surrendered in seconds. When the crew of the Agamemnon was put in the same situation, there was a grime acceptance followed by a rapid response to carry out the order. A great arc of examples that shows the difference between those fighting for their own gains vs those fighting to save others.

As shown with the last platform Minbari and Dellen couldn’t do anything, instead Sheridan nearly died trying to Ram it. Another Earth ship saved the day.

@@avenger4cats72 It was deliberate in the storyline that the Minbari and other alien races held back. The mission to liberate Earth had to be done by human ships so that the civil war wasn't just considered an alien invasion by the other side. When Clark turned the defence grid against Earth and he received a call for help Sheridan called the others in to help destroy the platforms as quickly as possible.
In terms of how much use they were, maybe not too much as they joined late. But we do see them help destroy some platforms so if they weren't there then maybe there wouldn't only have been that one final platform ready to fire.

Christopher's music really ties things together.
Not only does it show how far Sheridan will go to save his home but also conveys of how much danger he is in. And then when General Leftcourt jumped in on the EAS Apollo created a sense of relief that Sheridan is ok but even after we see the defense platform blow up from plasma pulse fire, it felt like the Agamemnon may have been destroyed in the process. It's not only until after a few seconds we see her emerge from the flames battered and beaten, we see that she makes it through.

I have loved many ships in my time, but there is nothing like the Omega Class Destroyer. Born out of the ashes of the Minbari War, it was humanity's finest ever middle finger to the universe; not only was it obscenely powerful, but it seemed like it was directly mocking the Minbari. You've got gravity? Well, so do we! Your ships are ridiculously well-armored? Well, so are ours! In striving to defeat one of the most powerful younger races, Earth accidentally created something so blisteringly forceful that it could overwhelm, or at least stand up to, virtually anything with less than a million-year head start in technological development. No ship has ever looked or felt more lumbering, mean and dedicated to its mission, and nothing else has ever looked or felt so capable of cleaving a singular star from the rest of the heavens and removing it from the fabric of reality.

In addition are all the ships in B5 not blowing up into invisible dust like in ST, but some burned out highly damaged ship hull remnants which then still keep floating in space with debris flying away everywhere from the internal explosions.
Only Star Trek Enterprise in the Azati Prime episode showed some comparable nice damage effects. Yet again, this old enterprise was sturdier than any other following more modern tougher Enterprise, which got knocked out already by a single disruptor shot.

Also B5 universe has no shields... more advanced races like Vorlons do have some kind of shield technology but the rest of the races dont... at best they have stuff like the EA E-Web system wich is similar to Enterprise "polarize the hull" ... and depend on thick hulls and point-defense systems. In the infamous first contact between earth and mimbar the human fleet (a couple of Hyperion cruisers and Nova Dreadnoughts) destroyed a couple of mimbari ships and seriously damaged 2 Sharlins ... some fans asked JMS how that could happen if the Minbari had so advanced ships and JMS response was "at that close range nothing can survive intact a barrage from even inferior ships.. they just cant".. Minbari superiority were principally about they having stealth tech, more accurate weapons, hugely strong ECM warfare systems, faster and more maneovrable ships with far superior navigation ... but if you could hit them they would fall... like everything else

Early on, when they first started taking the White Star out, Lennier rather pedantically explained that it used the "Vorlon Defense System", which deflected most incoming energy away from the hull.
In contrast, Starfleet ships appear to try to channel the incoming energy into massive banks of capacitors which they have opted to install directly behind the control consoles on the main bridge. Hence, when incoming attacks hit the shields, the excess energy causes fireworks on the bridge. Presumably they could not think of a better way to design this.

I suppose you could explain Garibaldi not being there due to his running Edgar Corp with his wife, but due to how Lorien brought Sherridan back from the dead at Zahaduum you'd think Franklin would go wherever Sherridan goes.
its ironic really because Boxlightner is about the right age now that Sherridan was during his time as President of the IA and later Ranger One so it could have been set in that time period. But yes they'd have to do a new series with pretty much a all new cast but then they'd have to retcon Zack Allen because the actor who played him also passed away. But unfortunately WB owns the rights to any TV series based on the medium and they've been stalling on doing a Blu-Ray remaster( to bring the CGI to the same level as The 3 Lost Tales Episodes) even though there is a lot of demand for it.
JMS does still hold the rights to movies and he did say back in 2015 that he was looking at doing a movie or series of movies and if needed he could self fund it but all has gone quiet since then.

Take the fight to liberate the Proxima Colony.
Its is chaoticly shot and makes little sense, how the ships position themselves and appear to be warping around the battlefield.
Its the actors performances that elevated this FX cluserfuck into a memorable scene.
Later on in the series, the FX crew got their shit togther and delivered a lot more coherent battlescapes.
That beign said: a little edit ofthe fight coreography and an update to the FX would not ADD much in the form of groundbreakling new things, but it WOULD BE DAMN FREAKING AWESOME to look at.

The Omegas are pretty fast. In Call to arms you can watch them haul ass with some major speed. The EA Warlocks where even faster. When Sheridan told Dellen "we need you" and she replied we are there, it showed Omegas/Sharlins side by side along with Starfuries and Nial fighters side by side. For some reason, the Omegas and Starfuries fired way before (and much more often) then the Minbari ships did, even though Dellen said they where helping; and especially considering the EA defense grid would destroy 40% of the planet in one shot -- well - every allied ship (and EA ship) would obviously open fire the second they got within range... Yet most of the allied ships never fired which means they werent within firing range, yet the Omegas where side by side the allied ships and Sharlins, so I'm not sure why. Unless the Omegas have better range than the allied ships including the Sharlin, or maybe just where able to move faster toward the platform putting them in firing range quicker (and the Sharlins DID fire multiple times, but they never hit anything). Or maybe it was another overlooked error. Considering JMS never told us much, we'll never know.

      @sistermarynapalm8612 Před 9 lety +4

ThatRebel 17 That is partially correct: The scene you describe is the extraction from the Death Cloud. There the Omegas are awfully fast - which seems very unusual. But I meant the actual combat situations - for example the battle of Proxima III, where most of the destroyers were shown almost "standing still" or the slow movements in most of the other engagement scenes. Even during the beginning of the Call to Arms battle, those Destroyers seem more floating than actual flying through space. At least very slow. That is what I was referring to.
Concerning the Minbari in the Battle for Earth: If I remember correctly, the writers idea for this scene was, that Minbari and other alien nations provide support to the EA warships, but held themselves back in order to prevent the idea from spreading that their actions are an alien invasion.

In the first episode of Crusade we can see an Omega (EAS Persephone) keeping up with a Drakh cruiser on the run... and in season 3 the Agammenon could keep up with the WhiteStar (yes the WS was in Jupiter's outer atmosphere but the Aggie was very close to it and not much far above...

That rapid fire barrage the agamemnon was dishing out is so epic to see, imagine if you had the whole fleet at mars unleashing that kind of firepower, sheridan would've been wiped out.

They learned a lot from the Minbari war. That is one of the lessons, as the only way they could take out Minbari cruisers was by ramming them.

The image of the destroyer flying out of the flames should be the icon of the show

In the final season, instead of a monologue, TNT decided to attempt a montage of the last four seasons for the opening credits. The final scene of that montage before the title graphics was the Aggy flying out of those flames.

@@actionsub It did work rather well, as TNT not only used iconic lines from previous seasons, it also altered those lines across the season. Every episode puts an emphasis on different lines. Plus the epic Chris Franke intro music made it memorable in its own right.

Delenn had the best lines. Succinct, to the point, and often very moving. This one "We are there" is one of those.
