You've nailed exactly how i feel on our situation. I don't see how this system stops goals. We've gone from 11 men behind the ball to charge of the light brigade going forward. Don't get me wrong , I've enjoyed the majority of this season more than the last few years but going forward like this isn't a league winning tactic. It just needs reigning in some. Playing high line you need a lot of energy from the players which is currently our huge problem. Watch the like of Bayer 04, how effective they are defending with their frontline or just compare our team right now to our first 10 games. We are too slow moving as a unit, pushing or retreating, lacking of movement as we used to ran like a mad men as well as the fear of playing risky pass, they don't want to lose the ball because they're too lazy or too tired to win back the possession. You can blame Ange for this reason, but we all know the quality of the squad we have is not there yet.

Sean, the problem isn't the defenders. The problem is the system. The line is far too high. We need to drop back 5 or 10 yards, still playing a high line. The halfway line is not a good idea because it gives us little chance of getting an offside. Just my opinion

For Isak's first goal it was 3 on 2 in our favor and Udogie was in possession, but lost it. Porro was jogging back waiting for the transition instead of getting behind the ball. This is not the system this is just poor defending, poor positioning, poor effort. The second was a straight up mistake from Porro to gift it to Gordon in the box. The third goal was the only on attributable to the high line but we're two nil down chasing the game at that point. Poor defending is not part of the system.

    • @leesmusic1
      @leesmusic1 Před měsícem

@@guamie Exactly, it's just not balanced, it's like a more cultured version of Ossie's system in the early nineties. And it's so easy to play against, soak up a bit of pressure for 10 minutes, then the gaps will be exposed for you to play balls into and be through on goal with a few passes. Sometimes you can get away with it because you have much better players (i.e. the Forest game, which at times we still looked like we could lose, if Chris Wood scores that second, who knows), but against decent opposition it's a problem. When our manager is getting easily tactically owned by Gary O'neill you have a problem

I don't think we can persist with Porro at Right back, great going forward, clueless defending. He rarely is aware of impending counter threats, leaves huge space on the flanks, if he gets back invariably he is too narrow and effectively it makes us wide open
In point of fact I believe this inverted full back game is our biggest problem and needs to be changed. Destiny looks a player who can develop more his reading and reaction to counters and improving his defensive game, but unless we get a better defensive right back and cut out the inverted full back tactics or scrub full backs and play 3 at the back then we are always going to be prone defensively
You are spot on that we shone early in the season before teams sussed out our game, but as much as injuries affected us it rather hid the fact that it wasn't so much the injuries as the fact that teams were finding ways to counter our attacking threat and take advantage of our defensive frailties
But it's not just that we are too slow to move the ball out from the back, Vic great shot stopper is constantly looking for the short pass out the back and then it goes to Romero who stands still or ambles along and then finally passes across the back to Mickey or a back and forth to Biss or Hoj and meanwhile again we play into the oppositions hands by allowing them time to get everyone behind the ball and organised
There are lots of weaknesses in our tactics and the way we play and unless we move forward quicker have better defensive balance, learn how to deal with high balls into the box, improve our passing and find ways to carve openings instead of pass the parcel we are going to suffer more not get better
I don't think the issue is having plan B's or C's -nice to have options and there will be games where plan A isn't working but our current plan A is flawed and Postie needs to change it, change the balance of defence and attack, the PL is not the SPL hopefully Postie is starting to realise that what might have worked well there isn't the answer here. Of course trying to change things at this stage of the season has it's own risks although some things need to be tightened up on, but if he doesn't change things in summer and wants to continue with his current game plan I really don't see him being here at the end of next season, which would be a shame in many ways, but not if he is overly dogmatic

By far and away the best Spurs CZcamsr at the moment and has perfectly summed up the situation that other Ange supporting channels seem to be ignoring, who are working on the premise that everything will work out fine without considering how that will happen. We have never had a better set of defenders and GK since Potch but we still concede a huge amount of goals, without a corresponding number being scored the other end.
We have got worse as the season has progressed as teams have worked us out. The problem Ange has is that he has boxed himself into a corner with his "this is the way we play" mantra and is unlikely to change. I would be amazed if he is still there at the end of next season.

If Ange plans to stick with his system all the time, then the only way to stem the goals is by keeping the ball even better and recover more quickly when we lose it.
This can only be done by signing some really top class players in the summer.
A proper DM who can screen the defence, LCB/LB for cover, and two attacking players who can bring 20+ goal contributions are a must.

I stumbled upon your daily walk posts and just from a football fan POV I do enjoy them. This one though is a whole other level of thoughtful ponderings.
As a Villa fan, I have stood back in admiration observing the metamorphosis that the club, players and the fans are going through under Ange. Especially as there are parallels with Emery and his effect on our club. Maybe this is too fanciful for some, but in this cynical age of too much money in the game Ange, like Emery has given the joy of football back to their fans.
Like many, I've been fascinated by Ange's philosophy, his stubbornness and how that has translated to the football field. I've enjoyed your football and the challenge you pose to your opponents. So imagine my surprise at your comments that Ange never considers tactics or opponents 😮 It actually made me lol in surprise mostly as its literally the complete opposite to Emery, who meets with his squad daily, sometimes more than once to go over theory, tactics before putting that into drill practice on the training field. The results of which are seen every week as I have never seen a manager improve so many players (ALL) in such a short period of time.
But its not all rosey. Two examples, the yen and yang: you have the tactical masterclass that beat Arsenal (twice) and ManCity to then the tactical overthinking he is known for, the out-of-the-blue tweeking of team formations. Changing things so much the players lose their focus, fluidity and cannot execute. With the result that we get spanked by a brilliant Spurs performance or Liverpool earlier in the season. Other losses like letting in 3 Brentford goals in 9 mins is just pure lack of concentration and almost laughable. As fans we are a work in progress so accept these odd wacky results as we implicitly trust Emery and his vision.
Sorry, this is sooo long, if you are still with me, bless your cotton socks as my Nan wld say🙏 I do agree with your concerns. I think your squad is a level above ours in some areas which in retrospect has given him this fantastic base to work from. But to expect them to be able to hit a ten level performance, flat out for 90+ for ALL matches isn't sustainable. You have to have the ability to adjust tactics before and during a match while still adhering to Ange's philosophy surely. Perhaps this is the hard lesson he has to learn as the Prem will take great pleasure in teaching him some humility.

We need to maintain possession better and in a 4-3-3 we need an Elite number 6. Our pressing from the frontline hasn't been as good either. City, liverpool, and Arse all try to win the ball back quick and maintain possession in the opponents 3rd of the pitch. We don't do that so well at the moment.

  • @tomdudley5314

It's interesting what you spoke about concerning our overall approach to defending. Think Ange has to adapt where in possession we have an effective back three (between the CBs, a 6 and a FB) where one full back drops back when the other is forward. Also where that line is drawn can't just be the half way line when the opposition can just get the ball and ping it forward. The lack of a quality fwd is breaking our build up play and costing us chances. Son just can't play if he doesn't have space to exploit and Richy doesn't have a delicate enough touch to pass effectively.
Think we have improved overall but like you say, teams have figured our style and we're not adapting. Won't work at all next season.

Really interesting video Sean. I share a lot of your frustrations. I think Ange is focusing at the moment on the basics and fundamentals of his system and then in preseason will move to tactical variations and focus. I’m aware he has said he does this usually at clubs. I kind of understand this view because I think the way we have played for 2-3 seasons has been so different. At the end of the season I guess we will see if Ange should have integrated tactical tweaks, changes or direction in sooner than after one whole season as the PL is a different animal. I’m staying calm for now but If I haven’t seen any difference in preseason I will be concerned.
Regarding recruitment, Lloyd kelly and KWP would be my only defensive signings this summer as I think we need to better squad depth with players more suited to the system. I take comfort in knowing that Ange has already stated he knows what he wants and we are reportedly getting a DM and a striker. I just hope they are of the appropriate quality and are close to elite or have elite qualities. I said before I’d like Ange to experiment with a 3-5-2 or 3-4-1-2 with Son and a new elite striker playing off each other and Madders or MGW (convinced he would be perfect for us) playing a Bellingham like role just behind them I think that could be a good option.
Part of me thinks Ange was reluctant to make tactical changes at half time because he has done that so much already. Within his book, Ange speaks about playing without fear and I think that he wanted to give the players a chance to show that they shouldn’t be fearful.

In Short, Without a Plan "B" We Are Looking Tactically Naive Which In All Honesty, Has Come Back To Bite Us In The Arse Far Too May Times This Year. Whilst I Appreciate Ange Has a Game Plan For Our Development, It Doesn't Appear To Include a Plan "B" Teams Like Newcastle For Example, Have Our Number And Now Know Precisely How To Exploit That Particular Weakness Which Also includes Defending Our Goalkeeper In Corner & Free Kick Situations. We All Know There Are Some Key Weaknesses In Our Team And I Genuinely Hope Ange Does Something About it Before He Becomes Another Managerial Statistic. That Would Be Such a Shame. He Just Needs To Include Another String To Our Bow And Provide Us With a Different Way Of Playing Against Certain Teams. Anywayzzzz, Keep Doing What You're Doing Matey And COYS. 👍

Totally agree Sean. Ange is not a tactician just a motivator.
Players need to be told what to do, and have strategies to implement when 'PLAN A' doesn't work.
The players are just left to their own devices and have to figure things out for themselves.
Teamwork needs a manager who is like a general who can tactically change things up at the drop of a hat. We are just lucky that Micky and Cuti have struck up a good relationship, and Vicario has turned out to be a great goalkeeper.
Luck doesn't win you anything when you are relying on it all the time.
We have good enough players, but the players need proper systems and direction for different scenarios. For me Ange isn't the one to provide a confident team structure. He just hopes the players who get the nod will be sufficient to get the job done, and that's about it.
And that is why a lot of the substitutions don't make any sense. It's all flying by the seat of the pants stuff.
This is why I also make the comment that I believe Ryan Mason deserves a proper go at the top job. He has seen the best and worst of many managers, so he will definitely know what will work and what to avoid.

Hi Sean. The back 4 can be improved by raising quality of Porro and Romero or adding to squad. It's the midfield that aren't strong enough, not enough fight and too many mistakes. Same can be said for the forward line. Apart from Sonny and Johnson, just not strong enough. Biss, Bentancur, Lo Celso, Hojberg are not fit for purpose. The first 2 are squad players. Nothing wrong with plan A if everyone gets stuck in.

I think it's just about the adaptation and the willingness to change from ange rn. Every team has at least 3 players staying at home to prevent counters, and we only have 2. Ange's philosophy is attacking at all cost, trying to score more than conceding. Our attackers are not sharp enough, so the defence will have to take all the consequences of attackers not finishing chances. And many managers now have the flexibility to set up his team depending on the opponent, and it is what ange might lack atm. I dont want to say this, but ange might be a little arrogant and believes in himself too much. He thinks epl is just the same as spl, where he can play a season with only 1 tactic and opponents didn't figure out. This is just the first season, so hopefully we can do better.

    Hi Sean
So much to say on this video. I agree with you on so many points.
But to put it into context I watched Chelsea demolish Everton last night who have had a very good defensive record in the Prem.
Chelsea defended from the front. High press. Three very fast direct attacking front 3 with Palmer playing a free role.
Gallagher was doing all the hard unnoticed grunt work when defending.
If we go to the Bridge and play our way without cover for the back 4 I can see a 5 goal defeat coming.
Interesting that Spurs fans have been crying out for Ounana as a 6. He was so poor last night and was taken off.
Our front 3 is not good enough. Sonny should play on the left or as inside forward off the shoulder of a 9. I was for signing Timo but not now. He can only be a squad player at best as long as his transfer fee is not diverting a bigger and better signing.
For home grown player who might become available Morgan Gibbs White for me.
Re CB’s current 4 cannot defend crosses or corners, free kicks in the air.
Zonal marking is a joke. I would have Sonny up on halfway line to occupy two defenders to stop the second ball coming straight back.
If inverted backs still stays have one up and one dropping deep. Gives Madders more space.
Our possession levels at Newcastle were insane. Too much horseshoe passing. Heard it said that players are looking for CL place and frightened of making a mistake. Ie not being braver on the ball.
    Just a few thoughts

I like Ange and I enjoy watching us playing football, but he’s not perfect. On one hand I recall Guardiola struggling to implement his ideas to perfection during 2016/17 and being mocked for saying ‘we don’t practice the tackles’ before spectacularly silencing everyone the following season. On the other hand, while this is his first season, this will likely be the season where he gets the most time to implement our strategy on the training ground as we’ve not had European football to contend with. Our pressing is inefficient. Teams seem to escape out front players and bypass the midfield too easily and are getting at our CB’s. Most teams nowadays attack with 5 and defend with 5 but we push both Porro and Udogie on so it’s more 6 and 4

And a striker that has physicality, can hold up the ball, doesnt have it bouncing off them like it does for Son and Richarlison due to their poor first touches.

  • @jacklane3679
    @jacklane3679 Před měsícem

I know this doesn't appeal to the reactionary narrative, but most of the goals we concede are due to errors when we have the ball... The game plan wasn't a problem when we were winning and this is the first time our starting back line has been fully punished 🤷‍♂
The likes of Werner are a nightmare for giving away possession with a nothing pass around the other teams box. With two full backs going into #10 positions and often all three midfielders getting too advanced we're open to getting countered. It leaves Romero and VDV completely isolated when we play one sloppy pass and it's pretty easy to fix if one player just steps back slightly to lead a counter press.
Individual players are taking liberties with the attacking nature of the system, rather than taking responsibility to anchor the midfield and move into better positions to make the system work. Newcastle played well and pressed high well, but when that didn't work they would just sit back in the 541 shape and punish our sloppiness in possession over and over again.
We need wingers that are better with the ball at their feet. As the season goes on it's clear we do need a 6 that is great under pressure in build up, but will actually sit back and manage possession when we're camped in the final third. Fix the errors on the ball and we will concede less chances off the ball... It really is that simple!

Cheers Sean. Frustrating loss but there was always going to be bumps on the road in the first season. The problem with playing exciting attacking football right now is two fold…
Firstly, we leave ourselves far too open at the back on the turnover. Whilst I don’t believe we have conceded too many goals that way, I do think that the approach can be tactically naive and really isn’t conducive to long term success without some modification based upon opponent and the ingame moment etc this is especially so as teams know to put the ball in behind us down the channel and then we can be caught out.
Secondly - we are playing too much huff and puff football. We huff and puff with the ball, we dominate possession but to what end?! We create very little in terms of real opportunities and certainly struggle when teams sit back. We need to find a way to beat this. We need to take more shots from distance but at the right moments etc. we need that spark, we need Maddison from the start of the season back as well as some guile and creativity on the wings.
Can we find that? Well if we don’t this Angeball project will be as short lived as the Conte one.

I don’t think we have the players here for that right now. I do think we will improve when Richarlison comes back as he’s more of a striker than Son. Son needs to be on the left, cutting in and with freedom to shoot from the edge of the area as he did before. And then in the summer we need to bring in a top top striker. The kind of player that is at the ceiling for what we can get. Our marquee signing of the summer. And then we can look to push on next season with a player that can hold the ball up plus get into the right positions and take the chances. Hope we get this one right.
