  • Welcome to part 54 of our #scrummaster #interviewquestions series where John McFadyen answers common questions asked of scrum masters and agile coaches in interviews and client engagements.
This is another trick question because a #scrummaster does not act like a #projectmanager by managing #project scope or #scopecreep. They don't have the authority to do so nor is it one of their responsibilities.
That said, it is inevitable that parameters will shift and a #scrummaster will find themselves helping a #scrumteam navigating scope creep so it's important that you do have a plan for dealing with it when it happens.
In this short video, John McFadyen walks us through the role of a scrum master in helping the team identify where problems are arising and coaching them to discover the best course of action to correct #scope creep.

Got through my class, passed my test and got my CSM! This question was mine to answer at the end of class, wish you would have answered this two days ago… but then again probably not as I should know this stuff internally before getting external help :)
I answered it by saying the scrum master facilitates conversation between the product owner and the dev team.
I think in general Scope Creep is going to happen regardless. If the team built a backlog and is practicing proper backlog refinement though they know what the minimum required work is needed to get the project done. From there as things improve and because work in theory is quantifiable via story points and what not (in this case they weighted work with the Fibonacci scale) PO’s and Devs have a way of saying “we could do that, but it will move x feature out of scope, or we would need Y amount of time”.
I think the biggest thing I’m learning with scrum is that it’s ok to be wrong, and it’s better to be wrong quicker so you can mitigate/mediate the situation to turn it into a learning opportunity before it becomes a disaster.
I’m excited to put these concepts into play. Obviously having only done 1 scrum project for 8 months (horribly wrong mind you) and having taken a 4 day course………… I’m an expert now (sarcasm lol)
Do you have an index of your questions? You have a lot now. I’m looking for one that helps on what to say when the company says something like “we are a hybrid environment” doing both waterfall and scrum. Or whatever combo.

Thank you! I jumped on your site, when I clicked the link you provided it took me to a big green screen that said "Ready to grow and develop..." with "assess your scrum master skills" box at the bottom. I clicked that and it took me to www.growingscrummasters.com/scrum-master-assessment/
When you get to the bottom it has a "Sign up and Assess your skills as an agile coach" but that takes you back to the top "www.growingscrummasters.com/scrum-master-assessment/#sign-up-to-get-your-coach-assessment"
It doesn't appear to be any way to sign up anymore? Or am I just missing it? There is a "Sign-up to Get your Coach Assessment" block image but no link on it.
