Great information video you guys have done here....
I got my guitar for Christmas was too excited to start learning so started the basics on CZcams and then did guitar lessons for a couple of months but as a typical introvert, I didn't enjoy it much and lost interest. Now I teach myself everything on CZcams for free. Once you find a good youtuber that works for you, you really can't go wrong
For a beginner one of the HUGE benefits of working with a teacher in-person over CZcams is their ability to provide feedback based on what they observe to improve technique. Beginners can't "see" what they are doing wrong and practicing more only solidifies bad habits, making them harder to remediate later.
Which is why it is easier for some people just to have in-person lessons!
Excellent, informative presentation and primer on all the main aspects of ukeleles--well done! After playing guitar for a few decades, I recently bought my first uke, a Kala Super Tenor, all mahogany. I'm delighted with it and I've been playing the heck out of it. Working with 4 strings has helped me discover voicings I hadn't previously considered on guitar. It's helping me hear new melodies and I've gotten two songs out of it! Now I'm starting to understand why some of my guitar-player buddies have gone uke crazy. All the best, and keep up the good work!

8:12 And, btw, Eastman is known for making mandolins! They are one of the recommended companies for people starting out on mandolin!… Just a tidbit! :)
I quit buying instruments with electronics. I now use a detachable pick-up on all my accoustic instruments. Works great!🦋

12:25 The Takumi definitely sounds the best - the most full-bodied, complex sound. However, the Eastman was pretty good, too. I would say it would be the best value of the three (3) of them…. I don’t know that much about the budget end ones, as there probably are so many of them - but the Kala did sound like what most people (guitar players, for example) would expect from an ukulele. It sounded alright - but especially in comparison to the other two, I thought it sounded squishy (like the notes were squished together - I know, hard to explain)!
Personally, if I were the one looking, I would be looking for something with a price budget in the range between the Kala and the Eastman, which sounds good to me.

Coming from a guitar I found a Baritone tuned GCEA was the easiest to adapt to and I love the mellow sound

You mention lowering the nut grooves, but can you give us a more objective measurement like the height at first fret to the string the way you did at the 12th fret?
As low as possible with clearance from the first fret.

Ouch! My beautiful Kala Tenor needs surgery! The action is too high. I can sand down the bridge. But the nut looks locked in there. Both parts are plastic. I hope I don't mess it up. I love this ukulele.🦋

What can i do against a "dead spot" on a ukulele? In my case, the C-String on the 4th fret (E4) on my new islander-tenor sounds a little bit "plonky" with less sustain. Are there possibilitys to change that? best regards and thanks for your videos!

What size sells the most regardless of beginners or pros?
10 years ago it was Concerts and if you include beginners its probably still the most popular size world wide now. For about 5 years now, 70% of the ukes we sell are Tenors regardless of the players budget or ability.
yousician is a great teacher
I wouldn't normally disagree but when researching my own courses I found them to be the worst by a mile with lots of incorrect statements made about the ukulele in particular. They even list the sizes wrong on one of their home pages.
I am glad they have helped you learn to play but I wouldn't feel comfortable not chipping in as I have heard so much overwhelmingly bad feedback in the past 18 months about the service.
I own 2 ukes now. I had no idea you can change the action. I thought that was locked in by brand. Are you changing the bridge and nut to change this?

I thought the cutaway did sound different and not quite so nice ..... But I'm no musician....
Interesting, but how could you know that wasn’t the individual instrument? It’s impossible to judge a difference in tone on the cutaway alone. It’s definitely a case by case basis
@@SouthernUkuleleStore But I thought they were both the same Islander Model.... just one was cutaway and one was not..... But then I don't have a great musical ear...
MrEricgal they are the same model but two acacia instruments can sound different. Same with any instrument - the question is whether we took two other islanders and did the experiment again whether they would sound the same as these ones?

@@MrEricgalBut even the same individual unit of the same instrument model (both WITH a cutaway OR both WITHOUT a cutaway) could sound different… Therefore, how do you know the difference in the sound which you heard of purely due to the fact that there IS a cutaway - as opposed to there NOT BEING a cutway - as opposed to just the fact that there is a difference in the sound in that particular UNIT of the same model, REGARDLESS of whether there happens TO BE or NOT TO BE a cutaway?! One could NEVER KNOW!
@@JJ_TheGreat in which case what’s the point of doing CZcams sound samples? What you’ve saying means that if I order a ukulele on the basis of a sound sample or an online review, even though I order the same make and model as the one reviewed, the Uke delivered to me may sound very different to the one I listened to online. In which case… I should go to a shop and try one for myself… Which, I guess is the best thing to do!
