  • Today we're playing Yakuza 3, the third entry in the ongoing Ryu ga Gotoku series, and the first one I played nearly a decade ago (must have been 2010? 2011? How time flies). A victim of cut content for localisation/time and a plot overloaded with kid drama, can Kiryu stop the latest big criminal plot while he also has to manage an orphanage? The answer is yes, because those two plots exist in separate universes! It's time to bring the heat in this brawling political thriller slice of life action/inaction title!

    Regarding Amon and 100% Completion
100% completion in this series is most of the time not worth it unless you are insane like me and a whole bunch of other people. The rewards vary from game to game with some giving them based on what part of the completion list you have done (In the early games if you do all heat moves you get the war god talisman which gives infinite heat, doing all substories gives the golden gun which one shots, etc) to doing the whole list (In 6 you get the war god talisman and in Kiwami 2 you get a useless weapon). As the series goes on the list gets easier to complete with 6/Kiwami 2 being the fastest to complete and 5 being one of the hardest and longest for obvious reasons.
Amon originally required near 100% completion to access but as the series gone on the requirement has gotten much MUCH easier with all of the games post 3 only requiring you to do every substory. Thankfully after 3 you can't fail a substory and lock off the future substories that one would lead into and after 4 all of the substories are unmissable. So if you want to fight Amon whenever you cover 4 here's some advice: Akiyama's substories are the only ones that are missable so get all of them out of the way before Hana leaves the story and stock up on sake and healing items for the fight itself.

@@Tehsnakerer if you're fighting 4's Amon as Akiyama just keep your heat up for his heat actions to damage Kazuya Amon. For Saejima either just bring guns because Jiro Amon packs an explosive sledge and regening health or try and slog it out. For Fedora Amon just equip the Sacred Tree Armour which is obtained from beating all trainers, it makes Sango a push over. As Kiryu just avoid Jo's orbital death laser and you should wipe him out as 4 Kiryu is broken. That's my advice to anyone who has difficulty with 4's entry of Amon.

You can still do hana's quests in 4 after she leaves the story you just gotta go back to Sky Finance before the point of no return at the end and sit on the chair which will result in a prompt that asks you if you want to remember hana or something like that.

      @sigmen4020 Před 4 lety +50

In the remaster of 4 they added a feature that lets you reminisce about Hana before the final showdown. This makes sub stories that were previously missable in the original doable before the final fight.

Rikiya's death hit Kiryu the hardest because just because Kiryu dragged Rikiya into his life, even though accidentally, and imparted his values on Rikiya, even though accidentally... Just because Rikiya knew Kiryu, he's dead. And this is the first time Kiryu understands he's a plague on other people's lives. They either end up kidnapped, murdered, or kidnapped then murdered.

So fun fact, in case you weren't aware. The quests with the kids were actually originally meant to be substories until Nagoshi, the director of the series, decided it would be better to have them be part of the main plot so that players could hopefully see the care that Kiryu has for each of them and he felt making them substories which could be skipped would lessen the emotional impact of it.

@@lastmanstanding7155 Hope you don't mind spoilers for Yakuza 4 and Kiwami. I'm not sure calling him self aware is the best way to phrase it but Kiryu himself says
"It took me forty years to realize this. But for guys like us... our lives aren't really our own. There's always someone new to help. Someone we need to protect. These past few years, I fought that fate with all I had. But I'm done fighting. It's time I accept the hand I was dealt. Too many people depend on us. Their dreams depend on us."
Had Kiryu been more aware of Nishiki's inferiority complex he could've worked to protect him in a different way. He could've worked to take over the Tojo clan and guide it to be better for people instead of exploiting them for monetary gain like his mentor Kazama used to. I guess that's also why Kazama wanted to make Kiryu head of his own family as well, to build him up as his official successor. Unfortunately, in Kiwami it showed mostly everyone in the Yakuza, no matter how rutheless or caring, nor how strong or weak, usually suffer a brutal end. I don't think it would be in Kiryu's character to seek success. He also lacks the desire to excel in the ranks. He admits taking the blame was easier for him than seeing his brother suffer, so he ran away from his problems in prison.
On the other hand, if Nishiki had been more aware of his dependence on Kiryu, or aware of the doctor's manipulative behavior, or aware of Yumi's preference for Kiryu and Reina's love for him, things could've turned out much better. Had Nishiki been more aware of his shortcomings as a person, he could've avoided or at least managed his feelings of inadequacy.

It's because of the themes of the franchise, and the circumstances. Kashiwagi died at a ripe old age for Yakuza, at the top of his game, and more total game time is spent on his mourning and his effects on the story. You-know-who is the character that Kiryu adopts for himself, he is the newest family member. He grieves with him about Kashiwagi, he gives the kids to his care more than once. He saw him as a brother, and with one stupid mistake, all of it was taken away. He was a future that would never come to pass because of the violent world of the Yakuza. Waited to watch this till I beat the game myself, I think the thing with Rikiya's death is that Kiryu's more torn up about it because he was a lot younger than most other people who've died, and Rikiya being one of the more good hearted people he's had to hold in his arms dying. Also, with the final scene with what's his name stabbing Kiryu, I knew the entire time the scene went on that Kiryu would live because he is, at most, a 10 minute waddle away from the doctor who's name I also forget who is used in canon multiple times.

This eventually builds up to 5 (and I assume 6 but I haven't gotten there yet) where he kinda hates himself since whenever he gets involved people he cares about get hurt.

I see the sentiment but I struggle to agree. I think it was just overly dramatic writing and direction. I also felt that the scene made me believe that the writers cared more about Rikiya than Kiryu or the players did. Why? Again, Kiryu has never up till this point reacted this emotionally to a character death. He is almost out of character to an extent. Throughout the game Rikiya is almost as constant of a figurehead as the orphanage, despite his entire story being completely missable, the narrative has such a heavy emphasis on him specifically. Say what you will about the character himself but the way the game plays out, it just feels to me the game really liked Rikiya and I wish I could’ve shared in the sentiment. Even then, Kashuwagi’s (my bad if I butchered the spelling) pretty much proves my theory that they didn’t really care about him much, a literal friend and mentor to Kiryu since he was a child.

There's a visual in the Ryuji fight where a set of bars come between the two of them and Sayama as they prepare to kill each other that really drives the whole thing home for me. But the thing with the orphanage in 3 for me is that it's a look into this peaceful family life that Kiryu has struggled to build, and it makes me so happy for him that he gets to spend time worrying about the kids instead of the Tojo Clan. The real stakes of the plot then (while I do like Mine and the idea of beating up on the CIA) rest more with how this life Kiryu has built for himself and the orphans is being threatened, which is why Mine bulldozing the orphanage is still to me the grimiest thing any Yakuza villain has done after I've played 0-6. It also helps a lot that I don't think there's a bad character on Okinawa, and the kindness and community ties the Ryudo family has fit well with what Kiryu wanted in the Yakuza. Some of these beats are recycled in 6, but I really like how they're done here. This winds up being pretty much the only time in the series where we get to actually experience Kiryu living his ideal life at Morning Glory/Sunshine, which beyond this game I think is crucial for understanding the emotional stakes of every other game in the series. Rikiya's death is symbolically the shattering of the idea that Kiryu's life can ever truly be free from turmoil. The wholesome peace at the early part of 3 is what Kiryu is continually trying, and failing, to get back to.

I really liked Mine, while he isn't my favorite villain. My favorite is Nishiki, but Mine is underserved as a character. I know why he's liked by the fans. His lust for affection and validation is a very relatable thing. A lot of us can see ourselves in Mine on some level. Despite him doing some of the most cartoonishly evil shit, like bulldozing an orphanage. And a lot of us see that Mine wasn't beyond saving.
Because as you said, Kiryu's help is unconditional. If you cross him, he'll beat the shit out of you, but he'll give you some advice and a push towards the right direction.
Both Mine and Kiryu care deeply for Daigo in their own ways. A lot of us could see that if Mine lived. The Tojo might've kept a loyal and valuable asset that could've prevented Yakuza 4's events. But that's the tragedy in it all.
Mine doing something completely selfless came at the ultimate price.

I went into yakuza 3 basically directly after marathoning the first and second games (a copy of the game was a bitch to find by the way since it's not available for digital download, I had to drive like 100 miles) and came away from it thinking the orphanage was the strongest part, not the weakest part of the game. I felt that, with the context of just marathoning 1 and 2 where nearly every problem was solved by beating the shit out of everyone, it gave Kiryu as a character more time to breathe in situations where he is not, in fact, beating the shit out of everyone. (Speaking of shit you notice from marathoning, there's a serious death scene where someone has a dramatic death where they basically die in kiryu's arms like 3 times in a row.)
Anyway, the moment where he goes to solve a problem at the beginning of the game and goes out of his way not to pick a fight even though he could totally take the person causing trouble was great, and like you said at the end, the whole family aspect was more important to his character in this game. I think that is why the orphanage stuff was mandatory not substory, because it was more relevant to the plot.
Overall while I thought the overall plot was the weakest (especially since if you're just coming off of 2 it's a massive downgrade) I felt it was one of the best entries at developing individual characters through self contained character moments, like, 3 was the equivalent of a "downtime sidestory" of a long running anime that's waiting for the manga to catch up to the anime that puts the characters in situations that reveal more about them.
It certainly comes off that way with the way it's paced, which means of course it's gonna clash with the objective raising of stakes that exist alongside said tone, since that kind of thing is incompatible with "WE NEED TO HAVE MORE CRAZY AND SERIOUS SHIT GOING ON THAN THE LAST GAME". Makes me wonder if Sega as a publisher intervened in the plot more than was necessary, the signs point to it based on the localization changes.

Been playing the games in chronological order from 0 to Kiwami, Kiwami 2 and OG 2, to 3 and I gotta agree with your sentiments. I think the orphanage sections are the strongest elements of the game. However I would struggle to always call them consistent in their entertainment value. But I think it’s easily the most fleshed out part of the game and narrative next to Mine’s character
Another thing I have to agree with is the decline in narrative quality compared to 1 and ESPECIALLY 2. It’s sad to see and the future installments, especially 0, do recover from this issue but I will say, going through these games in chronological order is absolutely a rollercoaster.

Certainly not the best game I’ve ever played - nor anything close to it - but by God, I’ve never been so charmed by a game in my life. Managing conflicts between and setting an example for the orphans, patrolling the market, rescuing dogs, beating up gangsters, learning English to help an all-too-friendly Gai-jin... it’s just great, such an eclectic mix that just should not work but absolutely does (at least for me). It's funny, because a lot of the issues of the orphanage getting in the way of the plot were issues I had in Yakuza 2 and not 3. Where I felt like meaningless things were getting in the way of the main story, like the Florist's issues with his son or hanging out with Haruka towards the end of 2. I felt like the orphanage in 3 built up the idea of family that 3 very much cares about, and I never minded taking care of the kids, even in the moments before the finale. With how much I wanted to see 2's plot going forward, I felt like those "stop and do this other task not related to the main plot" moments were way more unlikeable in that game. I think I fell victim to hearing that 2 was super duper great and that 3 is just okay, because I walked out of both of those games thinking the opposite. 2 was just okay for me, but I thought 3 was great.

i honestly loved the orphanage parts in this game, it makes the destruction of the orphanage feel impactful, at least to me, but at a point it feels repetitive and boring but idk if it was because i was tired while i was playing at that part haha.

I feel like the orphanage wasn’t that much of an issue for me, just because it didn’t feel as slow as you described it personally. Maybe my brain is messed up or something but I felt like the orphanage parts were a nice break from the big conspiracy and then when Mine starts to make his move on Morning Glory, I was hooked back in because I cared for those kids as much as Kiryu did

I finished this game yesterday, and I was so, so unhappy with how little they used Mine.
I liked him a lot, from the beginning, I thought he was the best antagonist so far (except for maybe Kuze...) but I wish we got more than just what we got at the ending.
He was so interesting towards the end, and I agree that him clashing more with Kiryu early on would be cool.
I liked the game overall, but after playing 0 and Kiwami 2 (both of which has stories I enjoyed far more) the combat and the way the plot developed was pretty disappointing.

It's funny how things come full circle. P5 had an obvious reference to Yakuza's Like a Dragon movie, I think like Judgment had a few references to P5 in some side cases, and now Yakuza 7 runs turn-based with a battle system like a mix of Persona, Final Fantasy, and Dragon Quest.
Eventually a future Persona game will introduce a character that's basically Kiryu by another name. I hope Kuroda will reprise.

Everything was perfect, a town you got to see the faces of respected yakuza, Tamashiro family, the family full of malice who had a boss which gave off a pretty interesting look other than being full on evil, but later just gone and turned into this country will be mine typo villian, under developed, same goes for Saki. I just say I loved the RyuKyu parts, it's a shame they lasted short. Those were what made Y3 very special to me, from Rikiya to Joji, Tamashiro to Saki.

I feel like Yakuza 3 tried to do too much with honestly not a whole lot of story. It just feels like its trying to too hard to up the ante over 2 with a story thats just badly structured and several characters who are played up to be important early in the game only to be killed off or ignored for most of the plot. The good news is that 3 is a plateau before another quality spike with later entries forming Yakuza into a much loved series

I've always found it interesting in early HD games like this, what textures and assets they decide to give more detail. In some cuts to certain areas I could have swore I was looking at a PS2 game. Not to put the game down, it's still crazy how much detail and variety they managed to cram in. I think I just remember early ps3 era games looking better than they actually did because of the jump to a sharper resolution at the time. Also, the jumping back to emulated ps2 footage that's in HD makes them look more similar than they would otherwise.
