- This Linbacker Training With NFL All-Pro Linebacker Hardy Nickerson Will Teach You How To Shed Blocks And Make Tackles To Dominate The Line Of Scrimmage
Effective Linebacker training drills need to teach the skills vital to the position. Learning to shed blocks is essential if you want to be effective at the linebacker position versus the run. We talk about fitting or fitting on a lineman. That's all about body and hand position. You start off as a lineman approaches the linebacker, we're going to take on the block by making sure we get our hands inside. One hand to the V of the neck and the outside hand to the shoulder tip. In order to win the gap you're defending you need to get your eyes on the gap and extend the arms.... Just like any other sports performance training linebacker drills should be repped as often as possible to hone the skill.
Linebackers should be strong with the hands. You want to be as strong as you can with the hands to get create a little bit of knock back, or rock back is what I call it. As you approach the Lineman strike with force. You need to stop and redirect his momentum. Get that hands inside and shoulder tip and create a little rock back.
Now, when you fit your gap, just pull or snatch the lineman in the direction opposite of where you want to fit your gap.
When you get hands inside with a solid base you are in control of the block. The Lineman is not going to be able to push you around. He's also, not gonna hang on you because your arms are extended. With your hands inside and arms locked out he can't keep you from getting to your gap responsibilities.
This linebacker drill is an important drill. Practice hand placement first. Extension after that. Then stepping and fitting again. For linebackers, specially linebackers that are off the ball. Even linebackers that are at the line of scrimmage taking on a block. It's very important that you know hand placement and how to fit and step from there.

Linebacker Training with Hardy Nickerson Will Improve Your Game.
As an former offensive lineman...be aware that the offensive lineman or blocker will 100% be fighting to knock your arms off. It will be a constant battle of trying to shed, very similar to how Oline and Dline hand fight. For me, it was harder to block a linebacker that could read the play just as initial contact is made, because linebackers can run from me. Hardy was an amazing linebacker. I was just a kid watching him work at Cal at Memorial stadium.
This is absolutely true. Always a hand battle.
Man first year coming into football for my high school.... I wish my coaches taught me this stuff before I kept getting blown up and wasted the season

I just did this technique on my mother in law! Thanks! Great content 👍🏼
😂
Naw dude you did her dirty #Never let them know your next move
🤣🤣🤣
Many kids when starting out make the mistake of taking on a blocker directly on the center. 9 times out of 10, they will lose that battle as the OL is usually bigger and stronger. I like how you are coaching to target the blocker more to one side towards the gap you are trying to punch through. I'm going to get my son to watch this video when he comes home after practice. Thanks coach !
Well said
Very grateful as a 140lb jv OLB that got thrown by a 6’6 behemoth last game
Good luck!
Hardy played a large part in building that Tampa 2 defense. Before Brooks, Sapp and Lynch were stars, Hardy was setting the standard the rest of the defense had to follow. One of the most underrated Bucs ever. He should be in our ring of honor tomorrow if not sooner.
I was a little kid in Tampa when hardy nickerson played there…I remember his commercials
The Dragon. He was a stud!
When you still have the record in the NFL for most tackles in a season, you better listen up! Great player and now great coach. 👍🏾
Probably one of my top 3 favorite LBs of all time, if not #1. Glad to see he’s passing on his knowledge, glad to see he’s still in great shape.
Loved Hardy Nickerson back in the day
He was a beast! And as good a man as a player!
This is awesome coaching, just what I needed for my game tomorrow. Could you do a video on how to properly blitz a gap?
I’ll talk to Hardy and see what he says!
This was good. When/where does helmet contact fit in? I can see using this on a twist or stunt where the lineman is still static, but guards coming to cut you off, tackles trying to seal off the outside, and pulling linemen are coming with force.
You may have to butt off if they are coming with force to hold your ground and play your fit/gap but remember the key is to keep/get the O-Liners hands off of you.
Thank you so much for the tips you guys are the best I hope everyone has an amazing day :)
You're welcome! Glad to help!
HARDY NEEDS TO BE IN CANTON!!!

EPIC
Thanks.
This helps
Where can you get blocking pads like that
Good, good, good....😂😂😂
Hardy is the best!
How do you prevent the lineman from getting his hands on you first? Most lineman i face have much longer arms and therefore more reach, making it so they are able to touch me before i can get my hands on their chest and shoulder
Where did you get that hands free shield?
maybe i just needa get stronger because i try this it don’t work on these big ass lineman
Strength is definitely an asset for LB's. How old are you?
@@EliteAthletesTV could you tell me some workouts that might help with strength ?
@@franciscopacheco9914 I could help you with that.
@@franciscopacheco9914 get on a push pull leg program. Train heavy weight for power
@@justinrolko9313 ok thank you !
Yo I got LEVELED by a fast center in practice yesterday. He ran from the line straight at me and just nailed me in the chest and off my feet. He was also a grade higher (8th) How do I avoid this. Cuz I just stepped out of the way.
Sometimes avoiding the block is also smart to do. If a clumsy lineman is running straight at you. You can put a head fake into the opposite direction you want to go. At the same time you want to rip through the blocker getting your hands free to make a tackle.
@@ApexPlays777 Sadly I quit the team two days ago, thanks for the advice tho!
@@yourguyphoenix Why did you quit
@@williamsonzion8206 I just wasn't having fun playing, always been more into basketball anyways
Football is all about leverage. If you have better leverage you win.
I used this technique to fight off my aunt Kevin
How is this gonna work when lineman hold every single time lol.
Lol! Thanks
Fax they hold all game and don’t get called u just gotta try and get a hold of them before they get a hold of u and throw em out the way
@@justinrolko9313 We're sneaky by keeping our hands inside your pads :P, you ever turn and run our hands will be exposed and 100% will get seen by a ref/umpire

The running back
After years of jarring impacts, even with blocks, NFL players must have memory problems.
Sadly, some do.
Video is useless. I want to see an olb grab and push off a pulling guard that is 100 lbs heavier.
That blocker is gonna have arms too manl better off with the scrape and rip
Until they start washing you by your run fit. Can't be a 1 trick pony. Have to have several moves.
