I find it splendidly absurd that a Scottish band would do a song about Birmingham, AL, but coming from this neck of the woods myself, let me say that it's spot on. It captures that itching discomfort about being stuck in the woods and run down cities of Alabama, with nothing but the thunderstorms, a jar of whiskey, and a dubious lady for comfort.
Some of big country obscure songs are there best, why this one never made it on to an album I'll never know,Stuart adamson vastly underated.always in my thoughts
I know what you mean rene2190.We lose one of the greatest musical talents of our time and most people are oblivious to what we lost.I am thankful that their are other people out there that feel the same way as us.
This song is maybe the most underrated one of a brilliant band. I love Big Country from the very beginning and it's a hard job to carry on after a milestone like The Crossing. But BC kept their creativity as long as they played together. Birmingham is just a simple demo track but should have made it to Driving To Damascus for sure. Maybe a second chance for a mature version with Mike Peters and Jamie Watson?
Maybe I'm different but at anytime, anytime, day, or, night, anytime, day or night Big Country catches my whole attention. (Maybe thats why I got fired once ha ha).
I love the classic BC of the 80's but definitely appreciate the turn they seem to have taken in the 90's with a bit of an American country element. Both sound amazing and entirely unique to BC in the way they pull both off.
Oh I agree with you about Birmingham being about gold diggers, absolutely. We must have got out wires crossed, sorry, I was referring to 'Song Of The South' being about South Africa, not Birmingham :-) Consummate has a sexual context of course, but is also a word to describe something being of the highest professionalism too. I think it's great the way his words here can be taken both ways, very clever writing :-)
I don't think he hated the south but had misconceptions that went away when he visited there. I wish I could find the article where Stuart talks about how after having lived there, he actually preferred the US to the UK.
I LOATHE the horrible American accent and mangled syllables Stuart used exclusively on all albums after The Seer. It's a million miles from the deep, manly tones of The Crossing.
I seem to be alone in my opinion that I wish Big Country would have stuck to their Scottish roots and sound which got them where they are. When Stuart started his infatuation with Nashville and American country music was the worst stuff they ever put out.....It pains me to listen to this Scottish guy with thick accent try to sing with a country twang.....wish it never happened......i still love their first few albums though
Me too. As much I love Stuart and Big Country, I really dislike C/W. It breaks my heart to say this but I sort of went off the music they started to bring out. Women backing singers and keyboards were brought in and ruined the incredible unique sound they had. But I still love them. 🏴

The four guys always had that ability, a song for every emotion-the Kings of Emotion!

since this sounds like american country music singing about birmingham this american BC fan has a great connection to this great song.

My Spidey Sense is telling me Stuart had a particular lady in mind when he wrote this.....not to name names, mind you!

For some reason, I seem to enjoy this song much better as a garden variety thunderstorm is underway..... or is it just me?
Bravo Danymailand! io non conosco questa canzone. E molto bella! E una rarita? Grazie ...
Keep on dreaming Dany!

That's easy, the big country he dreamed of, space and a nice climate in a beautiful country 💖czcams.com/video/BZnCZZm-emU/video.html
@@stuartlawsonbeattie6200 dunno about that. He already lived in God's country. 🏴🏴🏴

+Ben Manning Yes. Damascus sessions.
Anyone have a tabf or this?
Or does anyone know the chord progression?
STAY ALIVE
are you sure he is not refering to Birmingham England ??? Why do you think he hate the southern states in U.S.A ?
You know it's about Birmingham, AL because of the line "Alabama medicine turns hours into days."
