Look man I'm in my 30's I grew up in the age where saying gay as an adjective like "oh that commercial was gay" or using it in a negative way. I grew up where the f slur was in every movie even kid movies (kids using the language) and being in the social era of when using slurs like this was totally normal. Guess what? It is not the 90s anymore in not the early 2000s those words in that negative way are not acceptable anymore. I remember the last time I used the word gay in a negative way I was in 10th grade doing a summer program at upward bound which was very LGBT friendly back then. I remember I was watching a movie in the common room and I said " this movie is gay" which was extremely normal back then and the girl who was sitting next to me snapped at me (rightfully so) that "Hey gay doesn't mean bad or stupid" that's all it took for me to look at it in a way I had never thought about before as a straight guy. I've made a conscious effort to never say that again. It's really that easy and only takes a bit of empathy for people who are different than you. So saying "well we grew up in that time and it was normal and hard to change" what a load of shit.
EDIT: I wanted to add I have been absolutely raging and guess what? Slurs don't pop out of my mouth you know why? Because I dont use them in my private life and this content creator can say whatever he wants but its kinda hard to believe that he doesn't now and then for it to just pop out like that. I mean I hope he learns from that and trys to be better but I don't really believe he wasn't using that word before hand.

His parent were always super sweet and lovely. When I asked him why he would say stuff like that, he said that it's "normal" and that the people he watches and lookes up to share those views. He even started to physically abuse me at some point. It was horrifying to see a literal child be so hateful and I am so scared for the people that interact with them in the future.

I grew up in the 80s and 90s in the midst of all the homophobia, the AIDS pandemic, and it was normal to call things “gay” if we didn’t like them. I’m 43 now and you know what I don’t do? I don’t say shit like that even in the heat of the moment or a fit of anger. I was cursing up a storm at the door knob I was replacing today because it wasn’t lined up properly and not ONCE did a slur of any kind come out of my mouth. Plenty of “FUUUUCK!” and “FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT!” But never a slur. It doesn’t take much self control to not use slurs. In fact, it takes none at all. I mean it's like the N word. A lot of black people use the word, and so do many rappers, and hey, that's generally accepted (unless they are white rappers.. Eminem doesn't get to use the N word.) It's them, taking to those like them, and that 's fine. But for the most part they shouldn't say it on the internet because they know that not everyone in their community is okay with. My BFF (almost like a sister, that's how close we are) hates the word, and tells her other black friends not to use it around her, and they respect that. If you are a part of the LGBT communtiy and you are speaking with someone else that in the LGBT community that is okay with the word, fine. But when you are not in private, you don't use the word because you don't' know who else is around that is not as okay with it as you are.
Another example even off the internet is I have a friend who is a Cajun from Louisiana and he will use a word that is very common among Cajuns and we keep telling him, "You are not in Louisiana! That word is not okay here!" He is like "It's a term of affection!" and I am like "Yes, I 100% know it is. But we are in Kansas, not Louisiana."
Heck there is a word (nickname for a police van) that many Irish find offensive that I do not (my grandmother was Irish, first born of her family in America) and I use it sometimes, but I do NOT use it on the internet because of context that I don't know that other Irish might not be okay with it.

(Disclaimer, I am a transgender female who is asexual and homoromantic, meaning I like girls) Hmm... so, I will start with that "hot take" tweet. In my opinion, it is situational on its definition and use. I've heard tons and tons of slurs used against me in both contexts. To get on a deeper level, gaming has taken some of the conscious meaning out of the f slur. Consciously, quite a few people don't mean anything by using it, but 90% of the time, they do hold at least somewhat homophobic views. So, contextually in gaming, it usually isn't homophobic by itself. In this situation, I hold the same view I've had for a while: don't blame the person, blame the system. And I know saying "blame the system" has red flags going off for some of you, but let me explain. Gaming culture has long been this way, and I do think it should change. This culture does usually attack men-love-men relationships while usually sexualizing women-love-women relationships. The reason I call for change now is exactly as Aaron said, this is how kids learn: they copy. The f slur is only a small portion of an overlying issue. It's not just the f slur being used. I mean... we heard the streamer tell people (presumably men) to suck a dick. In this context, it's being used as an attack. In our minds, at the very least subconsciously, we associate calling people "gay" as a bad thing. It creates the relationships between negative thoughts and emotions to being gay. Again, this is not the entire problem, but they are major signs of an overlying issue. As always, please take your time reading this and have an amazing day all you beautiful people.

This reminds me of the time I grew up and told myself I wasn't going to use the "R" word anymore. I think it's part of maturing and people who still use these types of words haven't matured or have the intelligence to realize what effect these words can have on others. Have I slipped up and used the word after I told myself I wouldn't say it? Yes. However when the slip up has happened, it actually made me question why I said it, and then further instilled it in me to never say it again. I think it's not until someone thinks for a second and realizes what their words can do to another human being to make them stop. If they care enough to even think of another human being as an equal that is.

"the backlash isn't from who you expect, no the backlash is from people who defend the use of this word"
That's exactly who i expected the backlash from.
Typically if someone apologizes and doesn't make it a excuse hole and it seems genuine then yeah you're gonna get SOME people still giving you shit but you'll be fine.
But the people who defend the use of that word fervently are the ones who typically have a problem with apologizing as a whole for anything.
Ironically i'm of two minds about it. Yes that word shouldn't be used in general. The 'We had it growing up' while seeming flimsy is also a argument that varies from person to person. I'm bisexual and i still think of it when i'm incredibly heated because i'm young (mid 20s ) and this was just part of my vocabulary growing up. I don't say it but it does pop into my mind. This is a hard habit to break without effort and even then it's extremely easy for some people to drop the word and for others it's damned near impossible even though they want to. The important thing here to decipher in my opinion is is he being legitamately sorry about what he said or is he covering his ass for his career. If he's legitamately sorry and remorseful then cool. if not...then what's the point of any of this.
I probably didn't exactly express what i wanted to say very clearly but this is kinda my take in short.
TLDR: Bad people defend bad things, Growing up with the word is a explanation depending on the persons vocabulary though not a excuse, Be kind if someone is trying to learn and slip up. Be stern if they are using your kindness to avoid actual accountability

As a gay person i have something i want to say. To be honest I couldn't give a hoot about his apology, he started off by saying how it'll keep him up at night rah rah rah, which in my opinion invalidates his apology due to the fact that he is immediately making it about himself and how it will affect HIM, that is not a sincere apology in my mind.
Secondly I want to address the word he used. I use the F-word often to describe myself or certain friends, but see i view the f-word like the N-word, not every queer likes to be called it, even by other queers, just as not every black person likes to be called the n-word even by other black people. And it should never, NEVER be used by people outside of each word's respective community, and especially by people who use in a derogatory manner.
I have been in the gaming community for a bit more than ten years now, and sure this what it was like back then, but it's about damn time it changes. We as gamers are not "Getting soft" or becoming "Snowflakes" we just have the courage to speak up now about crap that has harmed us for years and we kept quiet about. They don't want us to toughen up, they want us to shut up, and let their hate filled words and behaviour go unchecked and unchallenged. We aren't weak, we have lost out tolerance for the intolerant, and found our voices, and we should not have to be quite once again simply because make apology videos, or can't handle the conceqences of their own actions.

This person continued to actually bully her in game, bodyblocking, even worked with the killer to unalive my friend cause she is a lesbian. It's ridiculous 🤦🏼‍♀️ I wish People were nicer to each other then being that toxic. There is no reason for attacking a person that bruttaly, it can really Hurt.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video and explain this terrible trickle-down effect! I really hope some people who needs to hear this will listen.
Another side note: You said that children who are listening to this will learn from it and I have a little bit of an issue with your choose of words here. The children don't learn anything in this situation, they adapt and are being socialized. They begin to learn, as soon as they reflect their (or other) behavior. Like you did when you reflected your behavior as a teen and came to the conclusion to stop using these words.
Why am I writing this? Because it's important to remind yourself to critically reflect yourself and the world around us. Otherwise, we won't be able to learn. We'll just adapt.

I knew there would be some people who will try to say that slurs are just "part of gaming culture" but be the same people that get mad when its called out as being toxic, whine about everything being woke, or diversity, or whatever they get hysterical against only because they cant play games without slurs or sexism. Its not news anymore that lgbt people play video games as well. But its weird that people feel like they're entitled to use slurs because they're "gamers."

I am bisexual and i (personaly) dont find the f slur offending at all. In my opinion its something simular to „b*tch“ but just for gay ppl. Some people just say it because it has some kind of weight because they know that its a taboo to say this word. I think screwing on zhe political correctness here would be more profitable since it would take away the taboo.

As a member of the LGBT community, you should be ashamed of being so blasé about these words just because YOU have given up on finding against them. No minority group of people should have a specific, negative word attributed to them and think that that’s okay.

Comparing to a simple word like b!tch undersells it's impact, I would more compare it to an actual slur like the n-word, not every black person likes being called that, even by other black people, just as not every person in the LGBTQ+ community likes being called the f-word. Just because it's not offensive to you or I, does not mean it doesn't impact others.
As for the comment "but that's just the internet, and the internet is an unsafe place." If it's unsafe, then we should work towards making it safer, better and more inclusive to all, stop letting people get away with saying slurs that clearly affect people. Not to mention, he was telling her to get in the kitchen and cook for him, when she was a child. That isn't mature, isn't acceptable, and shouldn't be normalized. Normal doesn't equal good. The audacity of someone being around my age saying it’s normal and banter amongst friends and used for affection and the idiot saying “before it went mainstream” dude I’m 33. I know for FACT that word has always been profoundly and world renowned to be offensive. Deeply. To both straight and gay. From the shirt lifters of the 50’s to the police brutality of the 80’s to now. They may say this word in their group of friends and not think anything of it but that shows the type of people they are. And what they fail to realise due to pure ignorance is that they ARE a TYPE of people. Amongst straights, gays, that word is not casual and not accepted. Just because you’ve been sweating on your lil boy shooter game saying among friends on discord and just getting away with it, doesn’t mean it’s “accepted”. A 90’s kid sounding like a full on boomer saying the whole “in my day” speech. Dude, there are generations behind you and in front that would smack the dumb of your face for uttering that word. Say it in prison, see what happens lol - making us 90’s look like fools.

You often say in videos, trash talking is fine, its just words it doesn't matter. But someone saying gay in a negative way isn't ok, but is also just trash talking and is just words? What's the difference, both could affect someone so negatively that they hurt themselves, yet one is acceptable and you should get over it and be ok with it, but the other is awful and abhorrent when the person saying both has probably the same tolerance?
Before someone ends up attacking me i don't use slurs but just thought this was an interesting topic to discuss.

I am of the mindset we need to learn to no longer give words power over us. I don't get offended when people slur at me because it's clear they want to hold power over me by insulting who I am. And so I let them throw their little tantrum in amusement. However, we shouldn't be using these words so casually, especially in a place of influence. We need to recognize the harm it does to youth that are confused about themselves. People in positions of influence should not use those words period, and should use those positions of influence to help people that are growing feel more comfortable with who they are. Then afterward we should guide them to better withstand insults and words meant to harm them, that way we can squash control that those that would wish harm upon people want to have.

I feel like the use of the F slur is gonna be compared to the N word. The N word was used hundreds of years ago as a derogatory term for black slaves, today it’s used commonly by black people to refer to each other, the word has been diluted from a derogatory term to a nice greeting to your friend because people took the word back and made it not racist. The F slur hasn’t gotten to that point yet, LBTQ+ people are still a marginalized oppressed group that get this homophobic shit from people calling them the F slur, maybe one day we’ll be able to remove the word from existence or make it a nice word. Only time will tell.

So I'm a big advocate of freedom of speech, in my opinion, as long as you arent threatening someones/someones friends or family's safety, being able to say whatever is on your mind is a great freedom to have, not everyone does.
Now when it comes to any type of slurs, I see using any sort of language is fine as long as you are willing to see the repercussions coming your way, and being able to take it however you do. I've never said something to someone over the internet that I wouldnt say to their face in person, and it keeps a decently healthy balance. Because that way it keeps things from becoming too serious or ignorant when it really doesnt need to be, because I think having to censor yourself to the point that you cant even use it for comedic value amongst your friends is a tad over the line for me. I've got friends from all walks of life, I've used slurs that directly describe them, and they are fine with it because they know none of it is out of malice, it's all for jokes and we love eachother for the fact that we can speak freely as such and just be ourselves, we dont hate one another's race/ orientation/gender, we just mess with eachother and are all friends at the end of the day.
If people want to make it that much apparent that they arent a terrible person because a word slipped when in a bit of a rage over a video game, then more power to them. And it's a shame that this guy is getting flak and criticism for the fact that he isnt practically groveling at his audiences feet begging for forgiveness, I wouldnt cause holy shit that's demeaning, his apology that it shouldnt have happened and that it was wrong and that he doesnt share the views based on him saying a 3 letter word in a fit of anger should have been sufficient. Props to him cause admitting you've done wrong is something that a lot of people struggle to cope with.
