Hot take: With how many people consider Derek Jeter overrated, heâs actually become underrated. 3465 hits and 71.3 WAR despite his defensive struggles
Yeah. Great DH. Shit shortstop
Exactly
My exact train of thought
I would disagree because he is still one of if not the most famous baseball player of all time and is considered one of the greatest ever by some.
He is underrated by a few fans but I think overall he is correctly rated by baseball fans in general just not by individual fans
A Rod was better
Jeter is definitely a guy with all-time intangibles. He really does occupy rarified air as a guy who, even with baseball no longer being the undisputed number 1 sport in America, still captured the attention of a nation. It takes a special mixture of skill on the diamond and character off of it to hold that kind of reputation. The fact that he gets RE2PECT from Red Sox fans, Twins fans, A's fans... fans of every team that got crushed by the unstoppable baseball juggernaut that was the Yankees dynasty of the 00s shows that. It's one thing to be loved by your home crowd, it's another to be respected by fans who want nothing more than for your team to go 0-162 every single season. That's what you call "intangibles", and Jeter had 80 intangibles (80 as in the scouting scale for tools if that's ambiguous). I was barely aware of baseball during Jeter's peak, but for me a guy that has a similar appeal despite my Yankees hatred is Aaron Judge. Even though I abhor the pinstripes, I can't help but smile watching Aaron Judge play.
As a Kalamazoo native that hates the Yankees have nothing but respect for this man. He played the right way and had the pleasure to meet him in his high school years. Class act all the way
Great take, especially his unmeasurable it factor. Just a terrible season while hitting .297 avg. Coming from a Twins fan he was definitely something to watch.
It wasn't just that there was talk of bringing in a stop gap vet, they were talking about trading a moderate AAA starting pitcher for that stop gap vet... MARIANO RIVERA!
That was the most impactful cancellation of a trade in Yankee history.
As an A's fan, the flip throw was the worst defensive play in MLB history. Right up there with Ichiro throwing out Terrance Long at third.
L take. Provide proof
Of course you'd say that.
Do y'all not know what sarcasm is

Jeter just turned 50 recently
damm i feel old
And as this video reaches CZcams, a Yankee shortstop who grew up a fan of the team hits for average, steals bases, hits for power when it matters most, shows a strong character, is loved by his teammates, and wins gold gloves. A lot of the same traits Jeter had that made him such a great player are shared by Anthony Volpe. It's way too early to compare Volpe to Jeter, but he does play the same type of baseball as Jeter did. That player is in there -- as a Yankees fan I can only hope Volpe reaches the Jeter-like potential we can all see.
Volpe has a better glove⊠so if he can hit like JeterâŠ. đźâđš
Volpe reminds me a lot of a young Jeter. It would not surprise me at all of he is named Captain when Judge retires. He'll be about the right age by then. Obviously too early, most people who are as good as he is at this point in their careers don't continue to progress that much. But if he does, it wouldn't surprise me.
And the Yankees clearly agree. Just like Jeter, they gave him the lowest unretired number. Gardner was close to getting number 11 retired. He wasn't an HOF caliber player, but he meant so much to the team when he played that he was close. Volpe could be the one to take that number off the board.
(And I don't count 0. The Yankees brand is not one that should be giving out the number 0 so lightly. It really could only be worn by a player who is both whimsical and incredible. Yogi would have been the ideal number 0. Cortez could wear it, though he has fallen off a lot. Swisher could have worn it. Probably Sabbathia could have. But Ottovino and Stroman... they don't fit the bill.)
@@nian_purkhard I know right? Granted if Volpe bats .280s with 20+ home runs to go along with his plus defense, I'll take it.
His ability to play in the moment is, something that cannot be tough.
Jeter was considered incredibly overrated especially in fantasy, it wasnt until VERY late in his career that he shook the overrated tag
We all know Jeterâs defense wasnât great, but to be able to play at shortstop his entire career, to make âthe flipâ to catch Giambi at home, to dive into the stands to make a catchâŠ
The guy played hard, for his entire career.
There are so many people calling him overrated that I think heâs actually starting to become underrated.
Defense is what they call overrated. Even the plays you named are average at best
I'm not trying to take anything away from Jeter, but he played for the Yankees and that gave him the chance to hit in the clutch. Not many players get the chance to come up in those situations. His career was defined by him being able to handle the pressure and succeed in those situations. He played hard and would sacrifice his body to make a catch. Great player who got lucky with the success of his team. He definitely deserved to be in the HOF, but getting a higher percentage than Ken Griffey Jr. completely shows that East coast bias.
Derek Jeter is an all time great. Seems like a person who wouldn't turn down an autograph, especially for kids. He seems like an approachable person. My only complaint against him is he shouldn't of been a 5x Gold Glover, the highlights drove him to being a Gold Glover.
It's like during the 80s Kent Hrbek was the better fielder over Don Mattingly and Hrbek should of been a Gold Glover, but Mattingly was from a bigger market so he won it multiple times.
"Cary Grant in pinstripes" amazing quote that im stealing.
Nomar Garciapara: Hold my beer.
Nomar was the 2nd best ss in baseball for like 17months
Nomar? more like No-More
Glass cannon.
Probably does need somebody to hold his beer cause he's gotta practically take off his batting gloves and put them back on after every pitch.
Not to be overly-critical, because I really enjoy all of your videos. But the audio in this one is tough to ignore. I feel like my ears are in your mouth.
Gunnar Henderson has a chance to do some shit like this, staying on the same team for that long.. is a scary thought because heâs a Borras client, & if the Oâs donât ink him the Yankees with throw him a blank check. Be a shame to cut that sweet ass hair thought.
Bobby Witt Jr. Is already on his way to doing it. Has 30 hr and 49sb last year (had a 20 hr and 20-plus sb season his rookie year) and is on pace for 20-plus hr and 50 sb this year. And he's hitting over .310 and already has 9 triples and 12 homers and 110 hits not even half way into the season. I'd say both Witt and Henderson could be better than Jeter. And they're both better fielders.
Do one on clayton kershaw
Even people that hated the Yankees liked Jeter
me, staring down into my Derek Jeter cloning vat, a single teardrop from my eye
I would really love it if they sold the team to Jeter. Of course the Yankees are WAY more expensive than the Marlins. It would take his entire net worth to buy the same low percentage ownership stake he had in the Marlins. But seeing him as the face of the franchise making the decisions on contracts, that would be awesome.
great vid enjoyed from kzoo
Shout out to the Norfolk Tides! Whoo-Hoo! I saw a ton of pros come up and rehab through that stadium. 4:39
Iâm sure Derek Jeter cares deeply about the opinions of the âbaseball intellectualsâ in this comment section.đ Heâs probably crying on his 5 rings, 5 gold gloves, and 5 silver slugger awards đ.
Hilariously, his fielding percentage is right there with A Rod, Ozzie Smith, Ripken Jr, Larkin... his range was top notch. He had a strong arm. He had great instincts. I never heard a Yankee fan complain about his fielding and i have been surrounded by Yankees fans my entire life and watch this game religiously.
It's just an arguement point for those guys that just love to disagree and argue. Just like them saying his OPS+ is bad. Since when do we measure a 2 hole hitter from the 90s and 2000s by their OPS? His entire job was to move runners, slap the ball to right field to give them a chance to score from 2nd, sac flies, singles up the middle, just line drive hitting. Nowadays yall are spoiled by guys like Schwarber, Ohtani, Tatis etc leading off. Those guys 20 or 30 years ago would've been 3 or 4 hole hitters. That's it. Ichiro, Jeter, Gwynn, Boggs, Carew etc were all time greats without having to hit homers. There used to be different meanings of being a great hitter. Now it's just "do you even slug, bro?"
I have said this many times I started watching the Yankees at 10 y/o in 94 I seen like every mile stone epic play and so many more ether live or on tv live if a screen writer made his career a move ppl would say it's to perfect...but really look at not just what he did but how it all went down imo the best career of any baseball players ever...it's the little things not the fact of 3000 but how. The last game so on so fourth...
He turned his volume down a lot idk I like it or nah
I hated this guy with a passion. But his clutch gene he possessed in the postseason was off the charts. You gotta give him his due.
There wonât be another Jeter but there now is the judge
Bro I couldnât hear most of what you said
Yeah sure, the defensive stats that came out five years after his career don't favor him, but anyone who watched him play every day was not concerned with his ability to play SS
Hard to disagree with this title. Setting aside the unlikelihood of seeing another professional player named Derek Jeter... We'll definitely never see another five-time Golden Glove winner go down as, according to all relevant metrics and statistics, the worst defensive player in the history of the sport. He most certainly set that bar at an unachievable height.
Great slugger, though.
If there is another guy named Derek Jeter they should use that Bob Shepherd tape to introduce him.
There are a lot of errors in this video⊠love the content but found it hard to watch after the 3rd or 4th obvious error
A good hitter that was also the worst shortstop in MLB history.
Can't wait to see all the 'defensively overrated' comments. I'm not a Jeter lover but to say he wasn't good is insane
If you have to pre defend his defense maybe it was trash.
@@tylers82 Iâm not saying it was good. Iâm saying that his offensive made up for it.
â@@tylers82 he wasn't a liability n he has 5 gold gloves n has some of the most iconic defensive plays in the biggest moments ppl shit on him like he wasn't a 14 time Allstar

You buggingâŠ.core NYâers always felt this wayâŠ.shit we are even hip to how he didnât win his first gold glove until arod left SS
Cuz they just didn't lol
I did
To be fair there were some grumblings when he won some gold gloves so the backlash was there at the time, just not to insane level later on.
When ARod joined the team and Jeter refused to let him play short, tons of people pointed out how much better defensively ARod was.
A-Roid>>>
No shit
If Jeter had the exact same numbers in say Tampa Bay, nobody would remember him except for Rays fans.
You basically implied he would have stayed in Tampa Bay.
That is not true lol he was one of the best players in the game for his career and is 6th all time in hits lol

People need to really stop saying he had defensive struggles you guys obviously just follow what people say than actually knowing about baseball the guy is literally the best shortstop of all time and itâs not even close
WAS
We can only hope, A great player in some regards but a terrible fielder and the dullest man ever to play the game. And also a terrible front office presence who valued the bottom line over winning. Honestly, I liked A-Rod a lot more just for not being a piece of wood when he wasn't playing.
i went to many yankee games in my day. i was in the stadium when he hit #3000. Im probably biased but....HES A BI-RACIAL ANGEL.
Omar Vizquel was way better defensively.

Jets is obviously a great ball player. And ladies man. But letâs not pretend for a second that his rejuvenation in his 30âs was do to working out for the first time.
i assume everyone did what they had to. i also assume they are doing the same today, because why not? the chemists and users of compounds and techniques are always far ahead of the pack. why not greg maddux, pedro martinez, etc? because they don't look like Bonds? Lance Armstrong is the GOAT PED user. DISCLAIMER: i am not accusing anyone of anything--certainly not Mr. Jeter--just mentioning the human tendency most prevalent among elite competitors in all areas of society to do whatever needed to gain an edge. Often pushing or breaking boundaries. I do believe substances and procedures--platelet rich plasma sounded VERY SHADY and now is common and why wouldn't players today be on PEDS more often or as often as before due to far more info and sophistication at their disposal? I see no reason they would not. We will never know. Also, REMEMBER THE JORGE POSADA rejuvenation lolol
