    The random breath tests are because a LOT of Aussies drive just casually drunk. Like, not swerving and veering drunk, but drunk. So they started picking people out at random to curb that, because if they had to have actual cause to do the test most Aussies would be like 'Eh they can't tell, she'll be right mate'. The random nature helps reduce the number of people who have a few beers after work, or a few beers at lunch, or a few beers instead of lunch, or a six pack on the passenger seat, or a beer after breakfast, or... you get the drift.

      There are still a few people who will go to Dan’s and just buy a “roadie” to drink on their way home from work.

      I'm from Poland, which, obviously, has a lot of people having a beer or two here and a naggin of vodka there, but still being 100% convinced they are good to go when it comes to driving.
      So we also started randomly pulling people for breath tests 20 or more years ago and wouldn't you know, the number of accidents caused by drunk drivers has been falling more and more every since

    Three of the weirdest things I remember from my time in Australia (as a Brit):
    - the most dangerous animal you could encounter on a regular day is arguably the Australian Magpie, they dive bomb into cyclists' faces and cause crashes
    - a Summer game is putting goon (bagged wine) on a spinning clothes line and try to get drinks as it spins. Somehow this felt more wrong than the Shoey
    - in Adelaide specifically there are quite a few Speakeasies. Australia never had prohibition, they just like the hidden doors to underground bars (I think partly to laugh at friends going for the first time and trying to guess where the entrance is)

      What people didn't realize is that self-service stations, at least in the '90s, that if somebody drove off without paying gas the attendant inside who mind you is taking money from a long line of people getting cigarettes for people answering questions would have to pay for that gas. • @zyeborm
      @zyeborm Před 4 měsíci +1

      I believe as it is frequently done with cards these days they will take out an "authorisation" on the card for some amount say $100, then you fill up. When you finish the authorisation is returned and the amount you actually used is billed. It does seem like a hard way of doing it and avoiding the impulse purchases in the shop when you do pay.

    • @OverlordVal
      @OverlordVal Před 4 měsíci +1

      There are two common ways its done: pay at register, or pay at pump.
      Pay at register means you tell them how much you want to spend and what pump youre parked in front of (ex. $25 on pump 2) and the cashier will basically tell the machine to stop pumping gas once the value of whats pumped equals whats been paid. Pay-at-pump means that depending on how much is in your account (debit) or your max (credit) it puts a hold on it. You fill your tank, and the meter tallies up the value. Once youve put your pump back on the holder, it will release the hold and charge your card for the value of what you pumped. 😊
