  • Actor and FFRF After-Life Member John de Lancie of “Star Trek” “Q” fame is the celebrity guest on FFRF’s TV show. FFRF Co-Presidents Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor talk to de Lancie about a new play he’s written about the attempts to sneak in creationism into public schools. It also features a sneak preview of his play about the famous “Intelligent Design” trial in Dover, Pa.
“I felt quite poorly about the fact that these students not only were not going to have a graduation, but also here were some kids who were going to start their life right on the cusp of probably a terrible economic cataclysm, just like my children had started in 2009,” de Lancie says on the show. “I have great sympathy for that generation. And so I felt that I could, I wanted to speak to them.” De Lancie further notes, “Being secular is not a lapel pin, it’s a mission.

I'm a big fan of John de Lancie just for his performance of Q. Didn't know that he's also an accomplished opera director, and a fellow humanist! Thank you for this great interview video!

According to Wikipaedia, his father, John De Lancie Sr. was an oboe player for the Philadelphia Orchestra for many years.

AGREED. This guy is so unlike his "Q" character, for a moment there I totally forgot he was only acting!!

The case is "Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District."
John de Lancie is a helluva great guy. I met him when I was just a kid, in a Shakespeare theater in Connecticut. Smart as hell and a true gentleman. So glad to see he gained the success he deserves.

I had a passing exchange of hellos with John de Lancie once that, in one simple smile, left me feeling like he was a legit human. It's a small thing, but it fueled my interest in knowing what he has to say.

It appears that religious thinking asks us to turn off our own logic ... and it's like a muscle, once turned off it's very difficult to restart when logic is needed. That's my main complaint against organized religion. And today's politics prove my point.

The "creation" business, in the bible, is the result of a mistranslation of the Hebrew word "bara." "Bara" originally meant to divide, to separate, to cut apart, and to renew. Genesis one is about the separation of the year into light and darkness (Persian/Sumerian/Egyptian influence). The six "days" are the six months/light when the sun appears to be in the northern hemisphere and the six nights are the six months/darkness when the sun appears to be in the southern hemisphere. Every story, in the bible,is keyed to Ptolemaic astronomy and the mazzaroth, where the earth is the unmoving center of the universe. For instance, the word "up" is always the apparent movement of the sun from the winter solstic to the summer solstice, and the word "down" is always the apparent movement of the sun from the summer solstice to the winter solstice.

Intelligent Design; It’s just another religion, it shouldn't be confused with actual reality.

This court case was so much like the Scopes Trial, that it was positively EERIE, like history repeating itself... again. I particularly liked what de Lancie said about, "Stay in your own lane!" Although this is (still) a free country, this issue amounted to pure Creationism, by any other name. Although I fully support Freedom of Religion, attempting to equate "science" with Biblical lore is pure poppycock, and although I can even view life itself as a "miracle," to view it from the Christian perspective (ala, "Adam and Eve"), has as much to do with 'science' as rap is to classical music.

Is this show intentionally designed to resemble creaky old religious shows from the 90s? The music... the set... remind me of things I'd watch on VISN (when I was still involved with Christianity).

I downloaded the decision (138 pages of it) and it starts with the school district's requirement that teacher read a statement. As usual, it has the evangelical definition of a theory, not the science definition, which is, unsurprisingly, completely disingenuous.
