  • Watch as I replace and octave of keys on my MiniNova. In the middle the framerate gets a little choppy because of some encoding issues. Hopefully you find it useful if you have a key break on this beloved synth.

Great Video, watched all your other Mininova videos. There are not many tutorials for this synth. The one about the appregiator was awesome. Keep it up. Very helpful. Thanks!

12:57 - it’s amazing how you put the train in so simply and easily, I shocked - and pulled it out too at the beginning like some kind of magician
don’t you want to tell exactly about this? Many will tear the keyboard cable during self-repair and this is definitely - Thanks!!!)

I'm sorry if this wasn't clear in the video. As I explained on the keyboard ribbon socket there are a couple of plastic clips. Pull back on those simultaneously and it will release the cable. It slips out very easily after that. Just do the same steps in reverse to re install the cable. I demonstrate this in part 1 and part 2 of the repair. I hope this video was helpful.

I've replaced keys a few times and never had an issue reassembling the keyboard, but I just had to do another one this weekend and the keyboard does not connect after reinserting the ribbon cable. The first time I did so, the first 5 white keys wouldn't work, after retrying all the keys weren't working. Has anyone had this happen? I think the ribbon cable is either not seated right or perhaps I damaged it. Any advice you can give is much appreciated!

Great video! I'm having trouble finding where to buy the octave spare part in Europe. Anyone any idea?

Contact Novation. They have great costumer service. There's also a good chance they'll just send you one.

Is there any way of upgrading those keys?

Mini keys are what they are no matter who makes them. The only mechanism I know of is the all plastic one like what's in the video. Full size keys have a spring mechanism that prevents ware on the keys so they last a lot longer than mini keys - indefinitely if you take good care of them. I'm not aware of any mini keys that have spring mechs, but even if there were they probably wouldn't be compatible as an upgrade to any synth that was designed without them in mind.

How often do the keys break?

I've had my MiniNova since 2015 or 2016 as pretty much my main keyboard and it has only happened once.

Listen, literate, how you disconnected the keyboard cable from the synthesizer hardware board ... it's much more important to film it than unscrewing the keyboard bolts to replace the white keys.
