Why So Many Gods In Hinduism? REACTION

  • In this reaction we look at Dharma Speaks CZcams video titled: "Hinduism: Why so many Gods?" Western concepts of religion frequently revolve around monotheism, contrasting sharply with Hinduism's rich tapestry of diverse deities, which may initially seem archaic and disorderly. However, this video elucidates how the multitude of gods and goddesses in Hinduism symbolizes the boundless essence of the divine. Each deity serves as both an attribute and a potent conduit for individuals to establish a profound connection with the supreme reality. Throughout history, various spiritual leaders have attested that worshiping deities is a path that leads to the ultimate goal of Yoga - the steadying of the mind and the realization of our genuine connection with the Divine.

    33 koti gods = 8 Vasus + 11 Rudras + 12 Adityas + Indra and Prajapati ( 8+ 11 + 12 + 2 = 33).
The term 'koti' in Sanskrit has two meaning, one is 'supreme' and the other is Crore. The term 'trayastrimsati koti' does not mean the number 'thirty-three crore'

+ Saligraama stone that is used to make idols has micro cavities on the surface and the minerals erode into the liquid. Later it is served in small quantities to the devotees in small quantities. Also water reacts to energies (including brain waves) and maintains states. The idol is consecrated with a prana pratishta by making it a part of the temple energy system. Hence Abhishekam has multiple benefits.

There's an entire ancient text dedicated to the science of constructing temples, consecrating the vigrahas and also the yantras to be used below the idols which trap and radiate energy around them. I am a hindu but I studied psychology . I believe our religion has deep psychological research and manifested deities and one identifies with that deity I seing the manifestation of auto suggestions . If it is not genuine faith ,but only rituals to score a point ,then manifestations that you want does not occur the same way as it could and would if a simple and direct relation with your belief is practiced or naturalized. Many puranic stories talk about wide eyes ( not blind faith) conscious and honest humility with your belief and ritualistic penance that reveals the TRUTh ultimately and how one gets mastery over at least one aspect of that force of divinity in the universe .

The thing is, Hindus, Jains, Buddhists never asked anyone who is out of their faith, to visit their temples, to worship their gods, to follow their rituals, Never tried to convert anyone. There are only two ways to get enlightenment, One is by just loving the God means being attached to the God (without caring about the surroundings) and Second is by seeking the truth (by study, educating, getting Gyan that means reaching the limit of consciousness). Love path is Easy while Seeking consciousness path is Tough.

I find the vire teachings if Hinduism to ve very practical and relatable principles to apply in your day to day life.
The reason we worship udols us because we consider the idol to be a gateway/interface/bridge/representation of transitioning from the materialistic tangible aspects (experienced through our sense) to the vast, incomprehensible world of infinite spiritual. It helps if you have something to focus on that engages all your senses that helps you take towards an out-of-body experience.

Yes , we offer flowers to the diety and pour milk, turmeric water, etc on the idols.
    1. Pouring milk ,turmeric water, kumkuma on th idols is a certain way of preserving the idols from cracking and also water is basically an electrolyte, which transmits energy much faster than air.
    2. We adorn the diety with flowers. Eventhough we believe that god is everywhere our mind needs something to focus on. That is why we assume deity resides in the idol and we assume that we are bathing the diety, we are clothing them and decorating them with flowers and ornaments because flowers are the greatest gift of mother nature. It is also a way of connecting the diety to nature.
    3. Before actually starting to worship the idol in the temple, we do few rituals and chant mantras, bury navadanya, and lokam(navadanya- a mixture of nine varieties of grains like rice, green gram, chick peas, etc, loham- basically means metals or alloys. we commonly gold, silver, copper.) This has something to do with the charges...
    4. Not covering the upper body is for climatic reasons. India is a tropical ,humidcountry and we see sun almost every day. While performing pujas ,chanting mantras and giving harati, in the inner chamber where the idol resides, it is pretty hot because there is usually no window and only one door. And the chamber is closed as i said, so it makes sense for the pujari(in your words- a priest) to not wear upper garment and even the lower body cloth or dhoti is tied because it allows the passage of air. Majority of the scruptures and carvings in the ancient ancient are also seen like this without covering the upper body because it is common and not considered a taboo (same in the case of female scruptures also. Only in the recent years after the colonisations and multiple invaders , women started following few clothing practices which were originally not part of our culture)

I feel compelled to share my understanding on why milk poured on statue , for two reasons , one the inquiry is genuine and question is asked in good faith and second i myself faced this question earlier ... in hindusim there are 4 ways of worshipping god .. one of devotion(bhakti and idolatry), one of knowledge ( where ignorance is the offering to god) , one of meditation (where ones breath is an offering to god), one of karma yoga( where ones good actions are offering to god).. idolatary is one of the ways where a statue is consecrated and it is assumed that energy of the deity has trascended upon the statue and it no longer stays a statue .. idol is treated as a real life deity and hence all offerings are material in nature like milk, honey, water etc .. please note a statue becomes an idol only once consecrated.. idol worship is considered one of the ways in hindusim , its not mandatory for advanced worshippers or anyone ... giving a form to god is not considered blasphemy

      Surah Al Baqarah
1:who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and donate from what We have provided for them,
and who believe in what has been revealed to you ˹O Prophet˺ and what was revealed before you, and have sure faith in the Hereafter.
It is they who are ˹truly˺ guided by their Lord, and it is they who will be successful.
As for those who persist in disbelief, it is the same whether you warn them or not-they will never believe.
Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and their sight is covered. They will suffer a tremendous punishment.
And there are some who say, “We believe in Allah and the Last Day,” yet they are not ˹true˺ believers.
They seek to deceive Allah and the believers, yet they only deceive themselves, but they fail to perceive it.
There is sickness in their hearts, and Allah ˹only˺ lets their sickness increase. They will suffer a painful punishment for their lies.
When they are told, “Do not spread corruption in the land,” they reply, “We are only peace-makers!”
Indeed, it is they who are the corruptors, but they fail to perceive it.
And when they are told, “Believe as others believe,” they reply, “Will we believe as the fools believe?” Indeed, it is they who are fools, but they do not know.
When they meet the believers they say, “We believe.” But when alone with their evil associates they say, “We are definitely with you; we were only mocking.”
Allah will throw their mockery back at them, leaving them to continue wandering blindly in their defiance.
They are the ones who trade guidance for misguidance. But this trade is profitless, and they are not ˹rightly˺ guided.
Their example is that of someone who kindles a fire, but when it lights up all around them, Allah takes away their light, leaving them in complete darkness-unable to see.
They are ˹wilfully˺ deaf, dumb, and blind, so they will never return ˹to the Right Path˺.
Or ˹those caught in˺ a rainstorm from the sky with darkness, thunder, and lightning. They press their fingers into their ears at the sound of every thunder-clap for fear of death. And Allah encompasses the disbelievers ˹by His might˺.
2: And if you are in doubt about what We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a sûrah like it and call your helpers other than Allah, if what you say is true.
But if you are unable to do so-and you will never be able to do so-then fear the Fire fuelled with people and stones, which is prepared for the disbelievers.
Give good news ˹O Prophet˺ to those who believe and do good that they will have Gardens under which rivers flow. Whenever provided with fruit, they will say, “This is what we were given before,” for they will be served fruit that looks similar ˹but tastes different˺. They will have pure spouses, and they will be there forever.
Surely Allah does not shy away from using the parable of a mosquito or what is even smaller. As for the believers, they know that it is the truth from their Lord. And as for the disbelievers, they argue, “What does Allah mean by such a parable?” Through this ˹test˺, He leaves many to stray, and guides many. And He leaves none to stray except the rebellious-
those who violate Allah’s covenant after it has been affirmed, break whatever ˹ties˺ Allah has ordered to be maintained, and spread corruption in the land. It is they who are the ˹true˺ losers.
*How can you deny Allah? You were lifeless and He gave you life, then He will cause you to die and again bring you to life, and then to Him you will ˹all˺ be returned.
He is the One Who created everything in the earth for you. Then He turned towards the heaven, forming it into seven heavens. And He has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.
˹Remember˺ when your Lord said to the angels, “I am going to place a successive ˹human˺ authority on earth.” They asked ˹Allah˺, “Will You place in it someone who will spread corruption there and shed blood while we glorify Your praises and proclaim Your holiness?” Allah responded, “I know what you do not know.”
He taught Adam the names of all things, then He presented them to the angels and said, “Tell Me the names of these, if what you say is true?”
They replied, “Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are truly the All-Knowing, All-Wise.”
Allah said, “O Adam! Inform them of their names.” Then when Adam did, Allah said, “Did I not tell you that I know the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you conceal?”
And ˹remember˺ when We said to the angels, “Prostrate before Adam,” so they all did-but not Iblîs, who refused and acted arrogantly, becoming unfaithful.
We cautioned, “O Adam! Live with your wife in Paradise and eat as freely as you please, but do not approach this tree, or else you will be wrongdoers.”
But Satan deceived them-leading to their fall from the ˹blissful˺ state they were in, and We said, “Descend from the heavens ˹to the earth˺ as enemies to each other. You will find in the earth a residence and provision for your appointed stay.”
Then Adam was inspired with words ˹of prayer˺ by his Lord, so He accepted his repentance. Surely He is the Accepter of Repentance, Most Merciful.
We said, “Descend all of you! Then when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows it, there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.
But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs will be the residents of the Fire. They will be there forever.”

I love that at 9:24 you nail the precise reason there are so many gods in Hinduism. “God is One, but it’s known by many names” is what I was told the first time I went to a Hindu temple. In the time I’ve since spent learning about Hinduism, the general idea is that there is a potential physical manifestation of God in any form imaginable, so each individual person’s idealized perception of God and preffered manner of worship is represented.
Also, at 16:15, the answer is yes you can sometimes just build a little idol of a deity for worship. At the local temple for Hanuman Jayanti (Hanuman’s birthday) the priest built a little idol of Hanuman with coconuts and bananas and some other things. The idea is that the deity is more or less asked to inhabit the physical statues for the purpose of face to face worship.

No real Hindu would blame you for questioning. As a Hindu, I can question the existance of God and it is not blasphemy.
Many Hindus are atheists, and many don't worship idols. Thats fine.
Many Hindus worship natural elements, like tree, animals, rivers, the Sun, the moon, the mountain, the earth ..
Or they choose from whatever devine persona they find motivating to mee,,, their call.. they can create a new god if they like ...
One may or may not pray or keep fast ... His/her call -
Hinduism is the most democratic and liberal way of life (it never was or is a religion)
But I must accept that like every religion, there are fanatics in Hinduism as well, who have limited knowledge about their religion. So ..

8:14 One of the core beliefs of Hinduism (present in all traditions, schools, subsets) is that divinity resides everywhere in this physical world. Our universe or reality as we see it is a physical manifestation of the divine and so all physical things, living or non-living is essentially an extension of the divine. And our ultimate goal in life is to attain Moksha (the enlightenment/realisation/understanding of that relationship of all things physical, including ourselves, with the infinite divine). Even the literal meaning of the Hindu/Sanskrit word for greeting - "Namaste" is - "the divine in me bows to the divine in you".

About the statue thing and giving flowers to statue or respecting a statue, there is a beautiful story of Swami Vivekananda…. he once visited a king’s court and the minister of the court was also saying the same thing that why we have to respect or at least show respect to statues??? Then swami Vivekananda told him to bring a photo of the king and told him to spit on the photo… the mister said that is was impossible for him to spit on his king’s photo… Swamiji replied - why? It’s just a photo. I am not telling you to spit on the king. Just spit on the photo. It’s just a piece of paper. Then the minister realises the whole thing. We all know that it is just a statue. But we give flowers on it because we see god in it. We are not the ones who will force you also to give flowers to that statue. But if we are doing it for centuries, then there must be some kind of emotion and thought related to it. The statue is only a medium to connect with the ultimate god. We are giving respect to that medium only

No place for blasphemy in Hinduism that is its core belief... Talking about statues they are like living persons to us.. its about connection with that deity.. some connect wd them as there child some as brother or some as mother... Its the total surrender towards whichever deity you worship.. u believe that they are wd u in each n every situation.. good or bad they will help u... We believe they have life so its not life we worship just statues we worship them as our supreme caretaker..
    For example.. each morning every
Deity is given a bath with five things called "Abhishekam" which includes milk curd sugar tulsi leaves and honey....
    Them they are dressed up..
Then we perform "AARTI" ... That rotating fire..
Then we offer then food called "prashadam"
Aarti take place twice a day at morning n al evening....
Then at night some rituals are performed after that deity go to sleep...
    This is performed everyday...
So let me conclude by saying we worship them as a living deity... Not as just a status....
I hope u learn more in coming time🙏

  • @madhurapatil5252
    @madhurapatil5252 Před 6 měsíci

Based on my limited understanding at this point in my life, I am going to put forth the concepts or recommendations for how to live life:
    1) Hinduism places a high premium on the human form (we transit through different lives taking different forms including animal forms based on our accumulated karma). Because only in human form do we have
    a) ability to discern and judge
    b) more control on chosing to or not to take an action or course of action
    c) to analyze and understand the implications of our actions.
Hence the depth and weight of our actions/inactions also bears significantly on our karma balance. Example did you help someone understanding they needed help or you were lazy or ran away from it. This becomes especially significant when you are an adult and have attained maturity.
    2) You are born, go through life and finally die is the process of life. You don't have control over how/where when you are born or die. The only part you control is how you operate your body and things around you while you are going through life.
    3) Death is the ultimate reality. Irrespective of age or stature, every life form is moving towards that reality . Some consciously others unconsciously. The best example that conveys the gravity is: You have got on a train that takes you to a destination Z. The train stops at different stations where you can get down take a break and get back on. So how much time would you spend at each of these stations? Would you get yourself lost in the appeal of the station or always keep track of the fact that you need to get back on the train. So if "Death" is the final destination how do you want to go about the different stations in your life?
    3) Your body is basically perishable and pain and disease are part of it (how much ever we want to deny it). One day we will wither away n perish. So how much time, money and effort do you want to keep putting into this body to operate it. That's something an individual needs to think and decide. It will usually be based on circumstances, body"s ability/disability and resources (available or at your disposal).
    4) You are not completely independent. There is always a degree if dependence. A baby cannot will itself and feed to grow. Someone helps with that. Similarly when you are sick or bed&ridden your will power and body cannot give you what your mind wants +example go and eat pizza). So we have to know our limitations and adjust accordingly. Basically prioritize.
    5) All our 5 senses are outward facing, new tastes, new smells, new music, feeling new tangible things. You need to learn to tame them by rationalizing sometimes coaxing that it's not beneficial or not the right time. Because running after the demands of the senses is like a endless bucket list or bottomless pit. You wanted a specific car and you bought it. What is to stop you from adding another car to your bucket list. Most of the things the senses are running after are materialistic and your mind and body is constantly being worn out running after it all the time.
    5) Here is where meditation comes into picture. You tell your mind to focus on a stationary thing and not the n number of things your mind runs after. Pause your mind and teach it to enjoy what it currently has: health, family and other life blessings. Then ask your mind "do you really think that having these n number of other things make you truly happy?" What do you want your life to be about(what others say and think or what you feel and think?
    6) Now begins the journey inward of rationalizing and controlling your mind knowing the limitations of one self. One of the examples that has stuck with me is this: consider your body as a shadow. As you walk by the beach your shadow falls in water/sand. Do you pick it and wash it or just say it's ok it's life and things will not stay the same? It's that with life and it's highs and lows. But make sure that you put in whatever effort you can. In Hinduism we say" it's in your hand to try the utmost but the final outcome is not in your control". Trying is the only action/s in your control.

The supreme lord is ever loving and forgiving. The idea of free will and karma is core of Hinduism. There's no grace point for converting or killing for the sake of faith. There's no wrath of God for criticizing or even completely disregarding him. Hinduism is way of life. As you sow, so you reap. Life and death in physical realm is a cycle of God's illusion, every soul is a fragment of the lord himself, so love for another being is just natural order of the God's play.

The elevation of level of your discussion just depends on one's own level. They are equally at peace & patience talking to a Phd in Nuclear Science, inquisitive brilliant teenager to a simple hard working joe. The milk poured on the shiva ling is advised to be poured only in shravan month because the grass/weeds that grows this time is not good and make milk produced after eating the grass/weeds poisonous. As shiva has already drank the most powerful poison and survived we give this milk and he blesses us for that.

How great Indian mythological texts are, by way of expressing scientific elements with one allegory for each to create enthusiasm among listeners!
Indian Sacred God incarnations of Trinity would be depicted as residents in clouds on the surface of sea - on the top of Ice mountains, respectively to show that Trinity is the metaphoric expression of gaseous - liquid - solid states and the respective which would bind matter into those respective states.
While picturising gaseous state from liquid state as two different bodies, mid surface exposure of a liquid state in evaporation phenomena, was depicted by vishnu's navel, as navel is the middle existence of a human body, one may wonder about Indian scientific representations, by looking at the evaporation phenomena and cloud formation from sea, represented by showing the gaseous state representative, brahma origin from navel of liquid form representative, vishnu.
