    Greek mythology nerd here.
    The guy who pushed the rock up the mountain in the Underworld was Sisyphus, a mortal king who cheated death, so the ship's name Aeolus isn't a reference to that.
    You were right that Aeolus was the god of the winds. Just guessing here, but the ship being named after him might be a reference to his involvement in the Odyssey, where he puts all the winds in a bag except the one that will blow Odysseus home. However, the sea god Poseidon is angry at Odysseus (for blinding a Cyclops who just so happened to be Poseidon's son), and so is trying to make sure Odysseus never gets home. So he convinces Odysseus's crew that the bag of winds is actually full of gold and they open it. They're literally in sight of Ithaca, Odysseus's home, when the winds come raging out and blow them all the way back to Aeolus's palace. Aeolus refuses to give him another bag of winds because he believed to have such bad luck, Odysseus had to be cursed by the gods.
    So my guess is the name of the boat is a reference to this: coming so close to home only to wind up right back where you started. You could even go further and say that Jess is Odysseus (who coincidentally also had a son he was trying to return home to), cursed by an oceanic supernatural force (in this case the Bermuda Triangle) to come just within sight of home only to be swept right back to where she started.
    It's also worth pointing out that, similar to Jess, Odysseus becomes the only survivor of his crew.

      @@shreshthasarkar4882 Naw, think of the loop as a repeating instance. If Heather lived, she's not actually trapped in that instance, and time continued normally for her. The real Jess is long died and was killed in a car accident taking her son to the Harbor. We never get to meet that specific Jess so it's even questionable if the events we see take place in the movie at all, or if it's just all purgatory punishment.
      Like from the moment she was like "I'll brb death, lemme just take a quick boat ride" death was like "PUNISH!" and then the movie takes place.

      She’s kills her son, she’s actually a terrible person, in reality. The version of her that is loving and wants to save her son is just a scenario given as punishment sorta, because she actually will never end up saving him in any version of herself. When she’s wiping up the blue paint, that’s actually her sons blood, and she gets it on her dress too, changes, puts her sons body in her car, then goes to the harbor and sees Vic, and this explains why she’s acting so strange and says her son is at school.

  • @Classynigga
    @Classynigga Před 4 lety +693

    The key to understand the film is this word - Sisyphus
    Do you remember the scene where they talk about Sisyphus , Son of Aeolus? If not, then watch the film again because all of it will start making sense when you have understood the story of Sisyphus, who was the son of Aeolus. The names of these two characters appear more than once the film. Aeolus is the name of the ship they are on. So it is very important.
    So, what’s the big deal with this name? Well, let me tell you the story of Sisyphus - Son of Aeolus.
    Sisyphus made a promise to death but he broke it. So death punished him by giving him a task. He had to move a rock up a hill. But as soon as he reached the top, the rock would fall to the bottom again. And he would have to take it to the top again. This was a never ending task because as soon as he reached the top, the rock would fall back to the starting place and he would do it all over again. It was an infinite loop.
    Is it starting to make some sense now?
    This is what's happening in Triangle. Jess was a bad and abusive mother so she was being punished.
    The loop started a long time back and she is stuck in it forever. There are many hints throughout the film. No matter how many times she thinks she broke free, she is still stuck in the loop - As evident by the dead birds on the seashore after the accident. No matter how many changes she makes, she realises that she has done it before. When the accident happens and her son dies, she takes a cab and decides to go back to the yacht. She thinks she will fix everything because now she remembers things and will avoid it the next time. When she gets down from the cab, she promises the driver that she would come back. The driver says -
    So, I will keep the meter running? You promise you will come back, right?
    The mysterious taxi driver represents the devil or the ferry man who wants to take her away. He reminds Jess that she has killed her son, who is now dead. He tells her that if she accepts this fact he can take her away. But as we see Jess continues in the loop so that she can eventually go home to see her son again. (She will probably break free if she stops trying to save her son and accept the reality.)
    Now the questions that bothers most of the people -
    If she remembers everything, why can’t she save her son during the next loop?
    Well, that is because whoever is doing this is making sure she forgets everything.
    When does she forget everything you ask?
    She forgets everything the moment she takes a nap in the Yacht. Watch the movie again and you will notice that when she wakes up, she looks bewildered. After that, she does not remember the Ship at all.
    Now, the good thing about art is that everyone interprets it in a different way. There are so many theories but this one made the perfect sense to me.

    • @VideoGuy232
      @VideoGuy232 Před 2 lety +48

      Technically it’s only two cycles. Jess A’s arrival cycle and Jess B’s arrival cycle. Jess A “dies” in odd cycles and Jess B “dies” in even ones. The reason why it’s confusing is because there’s three versions of them on the ship at a time (ABA in odd, BAB in even), but the events in every other cycle are the same.
      EDIT: The reason why I personally think this is interesting (and the meat of the movie’s premise) is because Jess A is fundamentally good, trying to do the right thing and save everyone while Jess B seems more sinister and murders them on purpose. I think this is a reflection (and foreshadowing) of the two sides of the character. The good one we see in the beginning, and the bad one we see in the flashback at the end. Her character is tormented and who she becomes is influenced by her environment.

    I believe the loop all started when Jess gets mad at her son Tommy and actually ends up killing him. The time on the clock when she starts hitting him for making a mess is the same time that’s frozen on her watch and on the clock on the ship when Greg clarifies that it’s actually 11:30. Which to me seems like the time that’s frozen is the time this all began for her. It’s her purgatory time. She’s stuck in purgatory constantly living the same nightmare over and over to get back and fix things to save her son that she killed. And I believe the cycle repeats when she is faced with the taxi driver because he says something like “the boy can’t be saved” which is giving Jess the option to quit the loop and move on to death but as we know Jess chooses to continue the loop in purgatory to try and fix what she did.

    I love FoundFlix's interpretation of this movie. I would add that the way to break the loop is for Jess not to kill herself when she comes full circle. There are parts of us I think we'd all like to get rid of, but we are who we are. As such, if Jess had CONFRONTED herself instead of KILLING herself, she'd break the loop. Sometimes we have to take a hard look at the person we are and just say, "I'm messed up." Throughout the entire movie, she's hiding from herself in some capacity. Darting from the mirror, the hall way, even putting on the mask, all indication of hiding. I believe had she given herself a stern talking to when she came full circle, to let her see she was about the lose her son, then it would have changed. The reason being is because she would have told herself about her mistakes. She had a unique opportunity to have a future version of herself meet her. Hopefully her former self, would have learned from her future self's mistakes. Then she could hopefully make different choices. Maybe. Maybe not.
    When she killed herself, she STILL wasn't thinking about her son. She was thinking about the ugly picture of who she was and she wanted to destroy it -- sort of like Dorian Gray. I believe this is proven when, while her son is hollering and screaming (can you blame him? He just saw his mom kill his mom MIND BLOWN!) she's trying to make him be quiet because it's affecting her. STILL showing that she's more focused on her desires than her son. Not that I blame her because kids making a lot of noise when you're trying to concentrate can be aggravating. But despite what she already knew, she still make the same mistakes because she refuses to confront herself. That's why loop continues as she avoid being honest with herself, the one person you should be honest with.

    I have always been intrigued by this movie. My take on Jess repeating the loops was at the end when the driver asks her if he can give her a ride....when she thinks for a moment, and then says take me to the harbor, knowing what she was going to have to endure... I always felt she was choosing to go and do it all again to be able to see her son alive again. She was willing to do it all over and over to be able to see him alive, and thats the only way she could achieve that. Thats always been my interpretation anyway. Exactly right on the driver being the ferryman..leaving the meter running for her. In greek mythology a coin was laid over each eyelid before burial so the dead would be able to pay the ferryman Charon to carry their soul across the river of styx. Excellent film.

Also, in the end, the driver is kinda giving her the option of whether she will accept the ride or accept her faith(death) but then she accepts the ride to save or see her son again or probably to change her faith (which looks like she continued to cheat death reason for her to experience the punishment) which continues the loop.

      It is so the "pain" will remain fresh and intense every time..? You dont need to remember everything forever for it to be torment, after all you would probably by deduction realise that you are in a timeloop. I would think that if you got to see e.g someone you love die over and over again for an eternity you would start to get "used" to it and not getting hurt that much by it. However cause these emotions are subjective I cant speak for everyone but only for myself and think that this is the reason she eventually "forgets" only to learn it again later.

      The point of eternal punishment in mythology is that it never lessens, that there's no point at which the pain can be brushed aside or ignored. It's why those punished by gods tend to have their wounds heal or start anew every cycle, or be tempted with a bit of hope that they might escape. It's because that way they don't get used to it, that they don't just accept things and have the torture lose it's impact. They fight because they hope they might free themselves, but they never do, because that is the real torture, not necessarily the pain in the moment.

    The cycle resets and she forgets everything when she falls asleep in the boat and in the cab on the way to the harbor as if every time she falls asleep she forgets everything and gets disoriented. The ferry man "Charon" was giving her another chance to move on to the afterlife but her being attached to her son she only wanted to bring him back. Remember when she said her son was her world? Thats because he was all she had. When she fell asleep on the boat and had the dream of her waking up on the beach was the past repeating itself in her dreams but she doesn't remember because of the whole memory reset, and so the cycle continues to repeat over and over for all eternity. In Greek mythology Sisyphus was the king of Ephyra. He was punished for his self-aggrandizing craftiness and deceitfulness by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll down every time it neared the top, repeating this action for eternity. She must have really been a bad mom to her son and the punishment made her feel guilty and she also cheated death by not going back to the cab "the ferry man" so therefor she is stuck in this cycle for all eternity. Sisyphus was punished because he cheated death twice, Jess also cheated death twice both times right after she woke up, the first time on the boat she didn't drown and the second time when she never goes back to the cab who represents the boat of Charon. In Greek mythology and Roman mythology, Charon or Kharon the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead. A coin to pay Charon for passage, usually an obolus or danake, was sometimes placed in or on the mouth of a dead person. Some authors say that those who could not pay the fee, or those whose bodies were left unburied, had to wander the shores for one hundred years, until they were allowed to cross the river. In the catabasis mytheme, heroes - such as Aeneas, Dionysus, Heracles, Hermes, Odysseus, Orpheus, Pirithous, Psyche, Theseus and Sisyphus - journey to the underworld and return, still alive, conveyed by the boat of Charon.

    I think we're missing a big part. the ship aeolus is a reference to sisyphus. They explain it in the movie but the reason Sisyphus was condemned to pushing the rock up the mountain was not because he "cheated" death (like how jess walks away from the car crash alive) but because he broke a PROMISE with death. When the crash happens and the taxi driver shows up and drops her off, he asked her to please come back to which she replies she "promises" clearly breaking the promise just as Sisyphus. So she didnt cheat death but broke the promise to return which presumably means accepting her death and going into the after life. Which answering the last question i believe the loops starts when the car crash happens because jesse was supposed to die there
    Edit: another theory that i thought about was the reason the crash happend was because she was distracted with her son, who just watch his mother kill his mother and saw a seagull get hit by the car. So understandably he's probably very emotional causing jess to be emotional because she repeatedly says she wants to be different and that shes gonna be a better mommy and so seeing her son cry isnt a good feeling. Taking her eyes off the road to calm her son, she crashes killing herself and the kid. Now going back I BELIEVE the turning point of her murdering herself was when she slapped the son (WHEN HE DROPPED THE PAINT) Causing her to rethink her choices and get rid of that mommy to be a better mommy. But the REAL QUESTION is, would the son have dropped the paint if he didnt get spooked by a copy of his mother? SO REALLY SHE CASUED THE LOOP AND THE LOOP CAUSED HER

    Yes I took it like the end with the crash was actually how it first started, she did on that day die and cheated death to try and fix it. Thus starting the loop and the movie and from there we piece it together until we get back to that accident and realise she's been at it for a long time now and it keeps repeating. So no matter what she attempts to change she can't avoid the fate that she's been dealt and each time death gives her the same choice knowing she will pick the same option. It is essentially a movie about purgatory.
    She cheated death so now she lives this loop for all eternity. Only thing that makes this movie bad is she's not a likeable person, so in the end we just don't feel bad for her and they never went into further detail outside of the ship to how the loop effected the other members. So my theory is even though we don't see it on screen, Jess accidently killed her son by physically hurting him, put his body in the duffle bag in the trunk of car but died in a car accident leaving Florida to bury the body (hence the sign). She was frantic talking to him even though he is dead and wracked with guilt that she was too distracted while driving or intentionally crashed her car as a form of suicide. Her boy is in heaven but she is in a hell of her own making separated from him. This is why she returns to her house and kills the Jess in the soiled sundress before the original Jess can kill her son. Even when she tries to change the loop to save her son and take him with her on her journey (to hell), the result is the same. Plus, why would she be meeting her friends in a sundress with paint spilled on it? An adult woman couldn't fit in a duffle bag or clothing bag could realistically The setting is in Miami but she's leaving the state of the Florida both literally and metaphorically to bury his body. She was so angry about her autistic son keeping her from enjoying her one day off because she was so determined to go yachting with Greg. Sisyphus was known for trickery. He broke his promise to come back on the River Styx which is how he cheated death and why he was punished. I was reminded of Casey Anthony- a Florida woman who accidently killed her child to go party with friends which happened 11 months prior to this movie being released.

    • @DownTrodded
      @DownTrodded Před 9 měsíci +1

      She did kill her son that is og version but she doesn’t do any of this she just leaves his body and goes to the boat after the boating experience og Jess expects to be arrested but dies at sea gets washed up goes back to stop og then shoved her chopped up body in the duffel bag then the rest plays out the washing up at the sea is the first part of the loop.
      Notice how in order for the son to spill the paint he has to be spooked by a copy of his mother the only place for the beginning of the loop to make sense and be logical is if she died at sea that would also explain why her friends are in purgatory with her.
      They died with her and are a part of her not beginning able to let go she’s keeping them here by convincing them they aren’t dead.

      Sometimes I wonder if the car crash was just her way of accepting that her son was dead, but perhaps she did kill him, and when she was cleaning up the paint that was his blood. Perhaps it’s open for interpretation but I doubt she could accept it if she murdered her son and put him in the trunk of her car. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Throw in some Sisyphean mythos plot twists along with Jess is a total bitch and killed her kid plot twist, it's a shame the movie only made a 12th of its budget. Although he adresses some plotholes, he also just gratuitously bashes the movie at any chance he gets for no reason and edits his video to make it look like a cheeseball. Of course there's some plotholes in the scenes we're shown, it's a predestination paradox about Jess's equivalent of purgatory. That's like being annoyed at super hero movies because humans don't have super powers. You can't have a predestination paradox without a plothole. Not to mention the whole parallel with Sisyphus cheating death, the point is how futile everything is regardless of him having pushed the boulder up the mountain countless times. How Jess thinks the loop works, what Jess hopes to accomplish with the loop and the variations between loops and iterations of Jess ARE ALL COMPLETLY IRRELEVANT. RELEVANT: Jess was a shit mother, got herself and her son killed, her spirit isn't at rest and refuses(cheats) to pass on to the afterlife and is therefore eternally in her personalized/repetitive Sisyphean purgatory. Although I'm sure Phelous would consider even the story of Sisyphus trash because there would have been marks of the boulder's previous passage on mountain or something. Lastly, come on man, you're going to compare this with Independence Day(good movie) depth-wise? That's just silly.

      It is not. We never saw "our Jess" become the "evil Jess". When the "evil Jess" kills Downey and Sally, she says "I'm sorry but I love my son" so that means she already went to the city and had the car accident and she remembers it all. We never saw "our Jess" kill anyone because she knew his son was dead. The loop consists of at least one more stage of boarding the ship that we never saw.
      For example, we also never saw "our Jess" being in the position of being pointed with the gunshot by the other Jess and running away.
      The guy making this video makes the mistake of assuming "evil Jess" is the same as the "masked Jess with a gunshot". They're not. The "evil Jess" is probably the last one of the loop before the beggining of the movie. Her memory resets because she dies. Killed with an axe by another Jess.
      So thre's at least 2 other stages of the loop that we never saw "our Jess" go through.
