High Seas Adventures - Cala Maria Song

- Since it was my fav episode I worked on, on the 2nd drop #CupheadShow, here's more stuff I did. Song was written by Dave Wasson & Ego Plum, sang by Natasia Demtriou. The episode was directed by Adam Paloian. I won't name the whole crew here, but they all did wonders ♥️

I love this cause it shows you the bits they chose to keep almost the exact same and the other bits that were made a bit different or used differently but yeah they had a big idea of what they were gonna do and not much changed

She meant to say mermaid since shes one as well.
Note: fish are anthropomorphic too in this world, so she could actually be the child of a sailor and a fish.

beyond changes to the timing of her movements and such and some differences with the cutaways, these storyboards seem like they were pretty closely followed. like, every motion cala maria does over the course of the song is still there and in essentially the same order, but with that quick shot of the pirates and the map removed and some extra scenes added of cuphead and mugman watching at different moments, they changed which line goes with which pose & shot, but not the actual order of the poses themselves. just the timing of it all.
its actually really interesting to see this sort of stuff!
I think different timing is kinda normal for storyboards.

It was intresting to see. I don't like how in the story board Cala Maria looks sadder, even Cuphead and Mugman pity her at 0:38. But I really like the tail motion at 0:45. Thank you for sharing with us
I really like the storyboard part about the skull added in top of the other skull's mountain. I can kinda see why they didn't add it as a main focus but glad to see they keep it in the background for the slam.

Not sure which one I like better, honestly, both the final and the storyboards have some great stuff. I like that the storyboards focused more on Cala and had that cool as heck pirate map theme, but I also liked seeing more of the brothers and their reactions in the final. I'm going to be thinking about this for a long time, thank you for sharing!

Every timing change you made from the original boards was an excellent choice. I'm curious about how your studio operates, generally moving cuts between shots is hard to negotiate without a one on one with your director and collaborating on the scene.
We all worked together remotely via "video-calls". Actually even the main crew in LA was doing it this way (pandemic)
@@CrazyBaloney I've lost that since the pandemic ever since we stopped studio work popping in on my director with hey I've got an idea is just not excess-able anymore and when I do do that it's small things camera tweaks or hookup changes. Not lets move this shot down the line because you wanted Cala maria to splash the water on a specific instance of dialogue.

There were only mild changes but I feel like each change was for the best.

Hold her evil face for longer, get the cups reaction, oh have them duck down with the beat (which I didn’t notice before), and show her shifting back not just her shadow.
On the top she seem more sassy
So she enjoys being a sea monster in fact seem to like it quite a lot but would like to have friend or two before thinking wait I'm sea monster oh well.
What accent does she have? because I LOVE it
It's meant to be a Greek accent.
It says Greek-Cypriot in the Cuphead wiki. & yeah I love it too.

I was a storyboard artist on the show (worked on 10 episodes or so), I also helped (storyboard) with the opening credits :)

Her facial expressions seem different in the test footage. Less... Nice and approachable. Granted she isn't so much to begin with but you know what I mean.

I actually prefer the part you did when she says "I am the number one sea beast". I thought that the jumpscare deviated from the tone of the song and just too goofy? But it is a show for kids so... 🤷

Sooo... As an animator, the amount of inconsistencies with following the timing to the boards is... A little concerning.
Either a team of animators spent a LOT of work on cut scenes, or the animation director(s) had already edited and annotated specific shots to the lyrics of the song to avoid over-animating unnecessary work.
And in my ten years of experience, the latter rarely ever happens.
Hmm, boards are a collaborative effort and are evolving, ultimately to match the vision of the director (depending on the production). My storyboards are shown above, the director (& storyboard revisionists) made some changes down the road. I can assure you that the final animatic delivered to the animation team was WAY closer to the final cartoons. I hope your concern dissipated a little...
