  • The Fall of the Leaf was the name of a folklore collection recorded and produced by Michael between January and April 2010 with clients from Riada House Day Care [Tullamore], Clara Day Care [Clara], Ofalia Day Care [Edenderry], Birr Community Nursing Unit [Birr] and The Irish Wheelchair Association [Ballinagar]. The collection was officially launched in Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, Birr, Co. Offaly on Thursday the 6th of May 2010.
Loads of interesting material around May as usual. Aside from Wexford and parts of Kildare, Offaly is a great county for the May Bush. You'll always spot a few when you'd be driving around the county. The title 'The Fall of the Leaf' comes a conversation I had some of the people about death where they spoke about ‘weak times in the year’ for older people. The Fall of the Leaf being one, the other being The Bud of the Leaf. Vulnerable times.
Following the launch, ‘The Fall of the Leaf’ was screened continuously for the month of May in Birr, Clara, Edenderry and Tullamore Libraries as part of the 2010 Bealtaine Festival.
The project was produced as part of an Arts Council 'Commissions Award' in collaboration with the Arts Office of Offaly County Council and the arts in health organisation Anam Beo.

These are wonderful stories; brilliant of you to get them before these lovely people were gone. I've so enjoyed them. I have a little bit of trouble with the delightful accent as I'm American, but these are priceless.

They were lost long ago when Christianity took over Ireland and removed the original pagan beliefs. Listen to the amount of holy water and Sunday’s in these tales which were never Irish beliefs.

This is something that I'm going to save because my mother's family is Irish, and a little Scottish (wee bit) But this must be preserved.
It will be a crying shame to lose this generation of TRUE Irish...so precious of a heritage, words can't even express.

The worst thing about progress is we loose a little more of our culturer. This type of person are all but gone, very thin on the ground. Poverty was a great bringer of people, there was more about the ordinary people from that time. All their little quirks, their superstitions old stories. It upsets me to think that this will all come to a end. We haven't the caliber of that kind of people any longer. Bring those days back. 👊☘️

I'm an American 75 years old, but both of my maternal grandparents and my paternal grandmother had deep Irish roots ( O'Connor, Dean, Behan, McGivin (?) ). As a youngster I heard of many of these customs that had been passed down to them, and tons of ghost stories from this side of the Atlantic. My one grandmother always said that if you see the ghost of a dead relative appear all you need to say to make them go away is: " _______-, what in the name of God do you want? ", and they will instantly vanish.

My Granny told us children if you see ANY spirit, you should ask it "What, in the name of the Lord, do you want?", and if it was there for evil purposes, it would have to leave. I asked Granny, "What if it tells me it's there for me?!" She assured me it couldn't hurt me once I mentioned God's name, but many years later when I felt a malevolent spirit, don't you know I completely forgot all those conversations with my Granny. That was a miserable night! : )
