I think it's 3 main things for me
    - I LOOOOVE Sci-fi space settings as you said because I've always found the aesthetic and the idea behind it very cool. PSO2 was my first PSO game but I have no doubt I would probably love them all
-The combat and customization is SPECIAL to me. Out of every single game I've played, both pso2 and ngs has had a combat system that just makes me feel so in control of my character. The fact that you need to actually feel out your class and learn it and there's a skill to it makes it all so much fun. Not to mention the customization is top notch. Even if some scratches can look a little wonky, it just takes that one scratch for me to come reel back.
    - The biggest reason is probably obvious. My alliance and friends. The true content of NGS is just the friends we made along the way. Lmao

As a 17 year old playing pso2 for only about 3 months it has become one of the strongest hyper fixations I’ve ever had with a game ever. My brother introduced me to most of the things I’m passionate about, he introduced me to anime and I thought it was the coolest thing ever as a kid, he introduced me to video games which I’m still heavily passionate about to this day and anything in the highly advanced future setting has always had that cool factor to me. Sometimes it feels strange eavesdropping on conversations about how people have played pso for almost their entire life yet I didn’t even know it existed until that one e3 conference showing that pso2 was coming to the us

I’ve followed PSO since Dreamcast as well. When it comes to PSO2 I played from EP 1 to 4. Took a break during EP 5 and came back during EP 6.
The reason why I play despite the issues is because this game ticks all of my boxes. I love the anime style and character creator. I am completely tired of click and wait, keyboard based systems like FFXIV. I am also very tired of medieval fantasy themes. I love sci fi themes. Especially if we can explore multiple planets. And PSO has all of that and a more free and open combat system.
I don’t much like the type of sci fi style that Star Wars presents. But rather more like Mega Man, and I think PSO while different is closer to that end of sci fi. Similar to Gemma this game has just always been my dedicated RPG.

You hit the nail… as a pso2 vet i can only say what I said before ngs got released, it was way to early and we got into a pit after so much content in around 1 year… this was a big mistake by Sega and they only can get most players over the years back… I’m still disappointed that my prediction was right… I feel burn out and that ngs has nothing that keeps me playing, a big open world is not a reason for me to enjoy a game… it’s the content

    • @azurablue9988

wow, i told the same thing to my alliance partners a lot of times, that sega was doing the things wrong, sega could have expanded for another year the release of ngs and make the pso2 base updates a little more spaced, pso2 was rushed and soo full of content every update that it was hard to keep the pace, and then suddently ngs can't keep that pace because programming and developing in new graphical engines its more complicated and needs more time, and now, the player base wants sega to keep the same pace they had befor ngs, wich its imposible... i have faith in sega and in pso overall as a franchise, i know that as time goes by, pso2 ngs will be one of the best mmorpg out there, but, its gonna take its time

I am here for the same reasons you are. I started on Dreamcast with PSO v1.0 and was hooked ever since. I didn't really play online until v1.2, and by that point you were either a hacker, or you were hacked. I played Episode 1 and 2 on both GameCube and Xbox, and it was my first MMO experience where I met and befriended people online. I love PSO, Sega will always get my money for PSO, and while NGS is a bad game the combat has me coming back to it every day.

Crinkle cut is an awesome intro. I named my Palico in the MH series after them ‘Crinkle’.
I think taking PSO2 casually is the best way to play it atm. I’m enjoying logging in daily and clearing my mission tabs.
There could always be more content, PSO has always seemed to drip feed content during development, but I’m fine with that at the moment. The team at SEGA are trying to listen and are telling us what they are planning, I’m hopeful things will continue to get better.
NGS is probably the prettiest game I’ve played on PC, compared to stuff like WoW & 14 this is my game of choice.
Thanks for sharing your story with the series Gemma.

I also started with PSO but on Gamecube. Later played PSOBB and PSU online on US and JP server. I tried PSO2 on JP 2014 but translation pack did not quite work so i quit until global release. Since then i play daily even NGS (maybe sometimes only quick dailies or log in before Mission pass).
I, like you, have great memories with the series and started to play the old games too.
So to your question: I still play PSO2 NGS since I enjoy time with my alliance which became like my second family and thankful to have shared my time with them during the covid time. Also the game is enough fun to do daily content and check in😊
Thanks for your content which also gets me motivated😘

I love NGS and am having a good time with it. My first encounter with PSO was on Gamecube with ep. 1 and 2 and played the hell out of that. Always enjoyed an RPG style game were I felt in control of the character. After that, didn't touch PSO until PSO2 went global (do the math). Had a good time with that, but felt like everything was very cluttered and busy. I played PSO ep. 1 and 2 solo, or with a friend on a couch, never online. I loved how PSO 2 had tasks and missions and urgent quests, but there was so much content just dumped on me that I felt overwhelmed and had no idea what to do. Steadily lost interest.
With NGS, I love the look and feel and I love the environments. I'm the sort of person that enjoys playing FFXV as a sort of chill out time, so just running around gathering and seeing the world is a good time for me. So for me, a big environment is a huge draw. I've never really played online while engaging with the community before and am giving it a shot.
Finally, my son was born 3.5 months ago and I only get 20-30 min a day to play in the morning, maybe 1hr on a weekend. As such, I'm very slowly moving through the content. Once I reach the end of what I'm interested in, I will likely become an intermittent player as I explore other games. But for now, am loving NGS.

I'm another PSO Booma who has said "back in my day" a few times now but yeah this series just gives me a feeling that no other does. I grew up with Sega since the Genesis/Mega Drive and PSO in particular just always felt comfy and like a Sega theme park. I started on the Gamecube (didn't play Episode 3 but it's got a good soundtrack) and then went on to PSO:BB on PC, PSU, PSO2 JP, PSO2 Global, and finally NGS. I keep coming back but some things feel off now and it's hard to tell if it's just nostalgia. Not sure if the things I want in a game really match up with newer and younger players anymore either.
Speaking of nostalgia, I found out you could visit a few PSO and PSO2 areas in VRchat. It was pretty cool looking around in VR on Pioneer 2 and then the Mines. Ugh, original PSO VR would be amazing.

Global release of PSO2 meant A LOT to me. In a time when the world started going to shit, PSO2 global was my zen. Felt so good to (finally) just get lost in it and learning all the classes. Im always going stand my ground that NGS should have launched with more to explore and do, being hot off the heels of EP6 part 2. But I finally accepted back when the NGS headline before Retem dropped, you know? when they revealed the new roadmap. if I want to see the EP6 equivalent in NGS. Then I need to chill and be patient. And sometimes that means rotating the game out and coming back later. New update clashes with the launch of another game I've been beyond hype for, Lost Ark. Lost Ark's beta 100000% sold me. So NGS is in a bid for my time. The cool thing is...NGS is such a chill game. It does not need to do much to secure a time slot...it just needs to give me a reason to stay after signing in.

For me it's the combat. The customization. The aesthetics. And the speed of the game. It's also very casual, so I don't need to grind over 9000 hours just to kit a class before I can go smack vets and gigantix. Yeh, the content's dry and not enough, and presentation's lackluster (janky cut scenes, harsh transitions etc.) but the core mechanics is what has kept me coming back for over 700 hours now. It just feels good to play.

I'm definitely late to this, but I had grew up around the overused fantasy settings. My first game was PSO on GameCube and played hundreds of hours with friends on and I enjoyed it a lot.
Phantasy Star took those themes and mixed sci-fi together in a way that was very different than most games that went only sci-fi or fantasy only with little to combine the two. I greatly enjoyed it and I had even gone through the many hoops to play JP PSO2 when it launched.
It's a series I hold dear to me but it's not gotten easy to want to stay with it.

  • @callofmasterchief
    @callofmasterchief Před 2 lety +2

I didnt know about PSO2 untill the Global Release and have been playing it non stop since then. Knowing that Global did catchup of 8 years, i also knew NGS would slow content down again hard and i am fine with that. My biggest issue with NGS content tho is how little of it is actual story. Base games story was filled with dialoques to actually get to know characters and learn about the world and in NGS i really miss that.
Right now i am still playing as i feel that i still have things to do which are bigger then the "boring" repeating of the grind. Things like leveling all classes or perfecting gear and playstyles. But if that motivation runs out then i am not sure how much i would still log in. After all i am playing games for fun. So if im not having fun with a game, why am i playing it right?

ive started in pso in the game cube back in the day, and as many people here, it was love at first sight, also it was my first online game that actually had full interactions with other people, it was fun as hell, then i jumped to pso bb, wich was incredible too, i also tried psu and, when i did it, only the jp server was on, so i didnt play it much, then i loooong waited for pso2 to come to america, which after 8 years, i never imagined to happen, but, when it happened, i falled in love again, and from that day i haven't foun a game similar to pso2 or pso2 ngs, even after tried lots of other rpg's online, i can't simply forget about the love for the action packed pso, and the interactions, and the symbol art, and every little aspect that make pso unique as a franchise, even if it still lacks stuff and content, other mmorpgs just feel... kind of empty and boring compared to pso, that's my experience with it XD
    pd: sorry for my english
pd 2: i also created a name for pso, wich i still use to this day, i don't know if for nostalgy, or to find those long lost friends in first pso and every other online game i played, but mostly, its because i love and respect pso as a whole world, that name is azura blue, wich i still use and feel honored to keep as mine
pd 3: i still remember how cool it was to take down dark falz with your partners, and get that congratulations screen customized with you and your partners, and learn that the fallen one was red ringo O.o the one that helps you through out the entirety of chapter one in the messages XD

PSO2, was both my first Phantasy Star Series Game and MMO JRPG. I first learned about PSO2 through the animes, and when I heard Microsoft was bringing it to the west, I really looked forward to be able to play it.
I have played games such as TERA, Guild Wars 2 and SWTOR in the past (I still play SWTOR when new story is released), and I came to the realization that I don't really like most MMOs out there; overtime it just gets tedious and boring, But I also found out what I like: Sci-Fi settings and in Depth Customization; and once I started playing PSO2, I also fell in love with Combat System, and the variety of outfits and personality you could find in them.
So why do I keep playing PSO2? Because there is no other MMO that gives me the same sense of "freedom" and comfort; and now with the transparency we are getting in some SEGA's statements regarding the game (Thanks Hiro), thins seem to be headed in a really interesting direction; beside the game actually having a whole lot of potential.
On a side note, I also like games with good stories (reason why I keep playin SWTOR, I like Bioware's Story Telling). I did find PSO2's story to be enjoyable (even if kinda messy xD), at least it was to me (definitely not a master piece though xD), but I do hope NGS gets larger volumes of strory, and lore at some point in the future (better quality is also welcome, although Retem's did feel like an improvement) :)

I missed out on PSU personally (due to not even knowing about it). I've still been playing PSO2NGS just to do dailies weeklies and stay around for content. I've been building my classes and trying to perfect my skills, honestly. I've also met alot of good folks between PSOBB, PSO2, and PSO2NG
When base PSO2 dropped I played that thing religiously due to combat I enjoy it quite alot. I think honestly, there's some things to be hopeful for now as it appears Sega is listening to players and trying to improve things. I keep.playing to get even more polished at it. Also gathering items that I really have no use for now. Like x cubes. Well they have a use now but only if you creating new weapons. Because there is a high chance that they will be needed at a later time. New weapon lines coming wil most likely I will need a ton to grind and enhance them. As well as gathering rare armor and wepa to use for grinding future items yet to come. It may get a little old doing the same things. But take a look at some of the old items that are still in circulation on old pso2. That you can do nothing with now. But....when they were new items that had a use. I don't see them changing doing things like that

Yes the Sci-fi theme is really one of its kind, I know there are games that probably had more content than what the game has but most of them are either fantasy based or is not action based gameplay that you can play like PSO2/NGS out there, and no don't tell me to play Monster Hunter or God Eater, those are slower paced kind of games in comparison and are paid games.
Not to mention wow, the customizability is actually way better than you might expect because we players are able to buy cosmetics for free that means our accessories and fashion items retains value, but they are able to be recoloured too. Which I believe most other Free to play or Paid MMOs don't allow you to have much freedom at all in reselling their Cash items maybe except for a select few. Heck we don't need to grind like crazy to unlock something like in Halo Infinite's Multiplayer but we instead can literally morph CAST Parts and accessories instead to look like it. The cosplay and various creativity on adjustable accessories are really what sold me too.

    I still play cause its an mmo I've just gotten hooked on. I've tried black desert and eso and I just couldn't get into them for long till I dropped them cause friends stopped playing and or the feel of the game just didn't click well. Pso caters to some things I like, base had its middle ground of futuristic and fantasy while I feel like ngs is more towards future star wars type stuff which I like. The combat for ngs for the classes in game right now are pretty fun. The drop rate for Rares isn't too bad aside from fixa type drops and reliks ; _ ;
And maybe it's just ship 4 but the community isn't that bad, everyone on my ship either knows eachother or just kinda keeps to themselves much like myself. I guess it's a cozy game and I enjoy sitting in there farming without feeling it being a chore. If I get something I get something if I don't I don't since well, I'm not gearing up for pvp which isn't in ngs yet and even then the pvp doesn't use units or weapons we use in pve if I remember correctly in base.

oh wow... why do I still play? I really like PSO. None and I do mean absolutely *none* of my friends play the PSO2NGS, for so many people being alone would be the end of it, but I like NGS.
First time I played a PSO game was so long ago I couldn't tell you the name, it was before dreamcast and I never owned a sega console so I *literally* only got to play it once.. loved it. It would be the global release of PSO2 before I would get to play Phantasy Star again but I kept track of the game's progress on the japanese side. I thought about even going through the hoops of trying to play on PSO2 on the JP servers but that's just a lot for my art major brain to deal with.. so I waited.
when the beta was announced on Xbox of course i was there and when the only PC global version was on the MS store I played it even with all it's issues and problems. I like PSO2 and I love NGS. I like the combat and the world in general. Friends tried it.. none stayed, that's fine. I played almost all of Guildwars1 alone so it's no biggie.

My first encounter with phantasy star series was PSU... Or it should be (replayed it and it was kinda different from my memories) anyways I happened to visit a friend and he was playing this online game and it looked very very familiar even though I didn't even play PSU for that long. "It looks a lot like a phantasy star!" I said, and he replied "well duh it is phantasy star online 2"
I guess phantasy star has this weird charm that hooked me without years of fond memories. Even that first ps game I played wasn't too memorable but I could instantly recognize pso2 from a glance.
Long story short I'm still playing pso2 ngs without minding stuff like "game is incomplete" and such. Just kinda burned out because as a casual I kinda worked too hard to farm 300k seasonal points just before this maint lol

NGS really is a great game, just severely lacking in content. I've been saying from the start that having the traditional system of instanced dungeons would really bring it back to feeling a bit bulkier. The current emphasis on PSE bursts everywhere is just boring if not completely frustrating.

Perfect comparison between the PSO fanbase being like the SF or CoD fanbases and a very good state-of-the-game video, Gemma.
I’m honestly glad that I did start playing with NGS in December. As for what keeps me playing? Well, I’m still new and play the game casually enough that I can’t imagine burning through the game’s content. While I totally could just rush to “end-game,” I find the journey is more important than the goal itself.

I personally keep playing bc I just enjoy playing soaring blades bouncer and dagger fighter. Also I suck but want to git gud. I can quit after I've beaten retem devestators solo.

I loved going through base PSO2. I reached Lv. 100 with my Phantom class, and I was absolutely loving it. The Urgent Quests that I attend, including Face of the Abyss was awesome, and I always challenged them at UH. I always set time aside to attend these UQ. I loved dressing up my character in costumes I bought off of the player stores, and I eventually stuck with the Ancient Slayer outfit, because the kimono style with the different blues really matched my character.
So when I first saw NGS I was really excited about that. I was practically becoming a part of a new chapter for PSO2 after doing many months of catch-up. And after launch week, I was really disappointed with the end product. Barring the disastrous server issues, I basically finished the story content for the region during launch week, and level grinding was so slow and so arduous. I didn't feel like I was gaining any progress when I went to the higher combat sectors. I know the level cap at the time was 20, but I just couldn't stand it. It took me an entire day to go from around level 15 to 16 if I recall.
A lot of this just felt unfinished. There wasn't much to do here. Course I am speaking from a semi casual standpoint. They definitely should have pushed this expansion back a year or so. It would have been better than getting NGS as what it is right now. I really, really do hope this gets better during the coming years, I really do, but as it is right now, I'm going to put my time and effort into other games for now.

Blade and Soul was the first mmo I got super obsessed with (the combat style is still my fave out of any other mmos i've played), but after about 3 years I was losing interest and looked for something to fill the gap. Pso2's western pc release was announced soon after and I was immediately sold because fashion is my endgame, and it had 8 years worth of cosmetics + let you do almost whatever in the character creator.
I played p consistently up until I think the second to last big story chapter since all my friends quit. With the NGS launch I've started playing again, though it gets kinda lonely being a solo player. I already knew it was only going to have a fraction of the content pso2 had (and tbh feels super ridiculous to expect it to have 8 years of content off the bat) and I don't mind much since I'm an adult and can't no-life videogames anymore. I appreciate that when work gets busy all I need is like half an hour a day for dailies to keep up. The highlights for me are def the new cosmetic releases.

I'll be here for a while, I plan to go through every class to find exactly what's gonna click for me. Chose Gu/Rn for my first class and it's been fun, but I wanna try quickswitching with braver and I'm waiting for gunblade. Why I play the game?
Because it's a continuous game where I can just pick up and go kill random enemies, and that's worth my while.
Sounds silly, but that's just what there is to it.
For the longest time, I've been trying lots and lots of online games, and they all suffer from the same problem in my opinion: locking/tieing progression entirely to questlines. and when you're done with the questlines, you're stuck doing repeatable instanced quests. If you're not doing a quest, you're not doing something worth your time. You CAN fight random mobs, but there's no point, most of the time they're rewardless punching bags, spawning in the same spot and waiting for you to kill them just to complete the quest tied to them.
PSO has enemies spawning left and right as they see fit, just fighting them is fun in itself. Quests are BONUSES; the place you get your gear, you meseta, and experience is the random mobs scattered everywhere.
I can login whenever I just feel like experiencing the fun movement and combat and that's what I do.

I keep playing NGS since its a fun F2P friendly MMO RPG, being sci-fi themed is an added bonus since I'm a general sci-fi fan, I figured the game would be low content at launch and more stuff would get added over time (the same thing happened with some single-player games I have) and I just work around it. Its nice to be able to run a game with others and work toward common goals, something that is very lacking in solo games and I can't run most of them for very long sessions since there is not many "rest points".
The Steam launch of PSO2 was the first time I ever played anything in the series and I transitioned to it while leaving another MMO RPG behind since it was no longer fun for me, not only that it was the first time my two recurring characters could exist in the same world, my main character Nightfire is based off my alternate persona that developed years ago from a virtual world, while my alt (my aux in PSO2) Danielle Fox is based on some who has been in my dreams for years.
I want to see where this game goes as it gets more content added in, NGS has so much potential that shouldn't be wasted.

I started with base PSO2 and as someone who plays many other games? I really found this sort of good balance - it's not too "busy" but there's still something for me to come back to every now and again. I also like how flexible the character customization is and I feel like no other game gives me this freedom with my character. The movement and action are also really fun to me too.
Now with NGS, it does feel less time consuming currently but I'm really ok with it as is cause it kinda means I don't have to pool in all those hours in one go just to feel like I have to catch up so fast with the stronger playerbase! does feel very chill to me. I just wish that NGS will give us simpler ways to level other than battledia triggers - like solo ways (really was happy with the keys in base PSO2 even if it had its own downsides). I also see that it still has more to do moving forward and I want to be in this ride all up to the end.
So I really get a little annoyed on people who keep thinking "It's a baby game" or just in general the hate - but whatever happens, I'll just be here through its lifecycle for as long as I can

Now, when I comes to PSO2, I don't know what happened to me or the game but I just couldn't "dig it". Played it for a year or two before global release on the JP server and for some reason, it just didn't have that spark for me. It was sad realizing it because I LOVE Pso. I don't know if I would consider my self young or old for this game, Im 22 yrs old and the reason why I still play PSO2/NGS is mainly because of the vast freedom of customization of character plus the fact that almost all cosmetics can be obtained without using real money( we all know games rarely do this), I also liked how you can switch to different classes without having to create another character( which is nice since you can still use your cosmetics). It's quite hard to find time for games especially I'm doing college right now, and im quite glad that i dont feel being behind even if I only play about an hour or two a day.

my brother then went and got me PSU which i loved soo much and the follow up ambition of the illuminus, a long hiatus from games in general as i have a lot of thing going on that i just didnt have time or energy for games.
i jumped back in with the DS and Zer0 which was actually really fun and challanging in places, i never had a psp so i didnt get to play the other handheld versions, the i got excited by the PSO2 announcement then was disapointed that is was JP only. i was browsing online for new releases and i almost fell off my chair with the announcment of a global release for PSO2 as honestly i had given up of it ever happening by that point,

I am 23, don't know if still considered Young for a MMO enjoyer lol. I love PSO2 for it's core gameplay, the combat is the best I have ever played and will continue to be, the asthetic is over-top-anime and the game doesn't shy away from it even after 8 years. The content is lacking at the moment but the fact that they are trying very hard to communicate with the core fan bases is excellent! Just like FFIV, Sega always keep the hardcore fan in the best interest and make sure to please them/us best. However, I can say with confident that NGS won't be like FFIV a realm reborn simply because it doesn't need to be. The foundation is sturdy and they are building up on it quite nicely, with a slow pace sure but it's assuring. I always like action MMORPG and PVE, PSO2 provide these the best for me without the predatory P2W shop that so many others suffered. I will continue to support the game until its final days and I hope those that playing the game regularly will support the game too!

I had a feeling before NGS launch that it would be bare bones compared to base PSO2, and I knew/know that overtime that NGS will grow into itself eventually. Unfortunately, the state of the game at launch was a bit more dire than I expected, but I am still hopeful that it can get to a place where everyone can enjoy.
While I feel that with Retem the game has gotten better for new players (It's literally twice the content that was at launch, what a deal!), the endgame grind hasn't really changed much at all for returning/existing players. And I'm at the point where the alliance I'm in has collapsed, I don't want to grind all the classes to 35, and the other games I'm playing are really starting to hit their stride right now.
So I'm content to just log on for my dailies+scratch for now, and wait patiently for them to build up the base of this game. Great video for a good topic to discuss.

In my first week I saw Kirito in the game, went on the Armada UQ, got mesmerized by how much I felt immersed during the quest, plus godly bgm, went on a concert that I didn't even know something like that existed in any game, and finally I got scouted by a really nice alliance and I went on a Trigger Sodam with them.

I got into the Phantasy Star franchise with PSU. I remember hearing about PSO on the Gamecube, and being a big Sega fan back then, I really wanted to play it. So when I saw they brought out one that I could play, I jumped on it for PC. I was Hooked on it, albeit just Single Player as we were broke and couldn't afford a sub to it aswell as WoW, where most of my friends at the time played.
I stopped when I finished the single player, but started back up with the expansion again. Eventually had money for a sub for it at that point so I dived into online, and was hooked once again.
When I heard about PSO2, back when it was in JP release, I was miffed it wasn't coming here. I found the method to get onto it back in the day, but given I didn't understand Japanese, it was offputting playing it that way. Every year I would periodically check back on it to see if it came to us. When it did, I was invested in other games at the time so I didn't pick it up until 3 months before NGS. Mind you, I had no idea about NGS at the time, so when I DID find out about it, I was keen. It looked clean, and a much better alternative to other MMO's at the time. So I played Base as much as I could before NGS.
Now, I still play it to keep up with exclusive items that probably won't be seen again later. Dailies and Weeklies, aswell as extra quests. But I struggle to find a solid group to run purp triggers with on the regular. Which is disappointing.
I see this game as a huge potential, but just needs that boost in the right direction to really get it going. I studied for 2 years for a dual diploma in game dev, so it's interesting to consider what they could do with the engine they have, and what feels like missed opportunities within it.

First, it looks like you're also having fun playing with the combination of jet boots and knuckles? It's a hell of a fun weapon. :D My main style is boots/double saber, but I favor this for more AOE style combat.
I started with the first PSO as well, though funnily I never owned it. My friends all had it on Gamecube, an easily portable system that lets us all play together on split screen. We actually played it for YEARS just entirely offline. Years after PSO2 came out, I found out I could play it via the tweaker and got pretty heavily into it during episode 5 continuing on into the end of the game and the entire relaunch of PSO2 on global since I had an IRL friend joining in this time. I love the asethetic of it too.
It's hard to define the 'flavor' of this game, but I feel like I'd describe it as a game with an incredible futuristic calm to it, but one that can go from calm to much more intense very fluidly and has fantastic music. The combat and atmosphere are a lot of fun to play around with for the little time I have to play each day and I love combining weapon types to try to come up with new fighting styles in this game. (It's even more fun naming them. I want to learn to use Dual Swords + Daggers just for the sake of being able to use a 'Dual Swagger' as one of my weapons. XD) The main Oracle storyline in base PSO2 also surprised me with how hard it hit once it got going and I found that really memorable, even among the other RPGs I've played. I hope the mysteries of Halpha can somehow approach that feeling eventually. Right now there's just not much written period, so there's a lot of room to write in at the very least.
I agree with the whole 'it's just MY thing' perspective too. It's one of the games I have a bit more of a connection to, and that just means it's a game I'll always be keeping an eye on because I want to be there when it's succeeding. I think pretty much everyone feels that way about their personal favorites. They love to talk about them, love to share them with other people, and love to hope for the best future you can imagine, even when it's hard to tell if that will ever come to pass. At the same time, nobody is 100% invested in only one of their favorite things, so if it doesn't turn out this time around, they'll just find other things to do until something happens with the series again. There is no concrete way to predict the future for a game or series. Even in recent years, games have resurfaced that were once thought to have dropped off entirely.
I don't think it's that hard to just replace one series with another when imagining how someone else might feel about their favorite games. No one's favorites are immune to criticism, and no one likes it when someone takes the lowest-blow option of picking on them for something they enjoy, so I don't know why anybody would think they have any right to treat people that way.

Honestly my reasons are similar to yours, but I'm not really a sticker. I didn't play the original PSU or base PSO2 on jp release for very long because I didn't like them at all, but I do like the phantasy star series in general, even before online.
My main reason for staying is the potential the game has; I like NGS WAYYYY more than I liked base pso2 when that first came out in jp, and seeing how much that game improved overall over the years, I can see ngs being one of the better games in the series given enough time and polish. It's kind of a flimsy reason tbh because sega could just as easily mess things up more, or not fix some of the core issues with the game, but it's enough for now.
