I think this is the best channel going! Informative topics, great Docs and thanks for Dr. Aryhat (sp)… a topic near and dear to my Heart ♥️ (burn). Always so reassuring to hear what I have found first hand. I’m in Victoria (BC) with a great Gastro Doc. Long standing moderate/severe GERD (confirmed through hose in the nose tests) and I’m a lifer on PPI’s but no damage found on gastroscopy and on recall for one every 10 years. Stomach valve doesn’t quite close and not a surgery candidate because of weak swallows. Regardless, life style can be key. I hike, I yoga, try my best at food intake but I love chocolate and green tea. Ah well, the PPI and Gaviscon work quite well for me. Thank you for this video. For those that haven’t … SUBSCRIBE. I had silent heartburn or GERD for 26 years before it was diagnosed. I had yearly bronchitis and a winter cough that would last 6 months each year. When I was sent to a GI doc, I had surgery and all these symptoms went away immediately. I now seldom have a cough and I haven't had bronchitis for 11 years. You don't need to have the "burn" to have GERD but everything else in the video was spot on. Happy Holidays to all

      @ScotHarkins Před rokem

Ditto on the silent, until it started happening in my sleep, while supine on our bed. Discovered both a constriction and a Schatzki ring. In for a procedure for those but there's ridges in my esophagus, so they stopped right there and took a biopsy. They were puzzled by the eosinophils in the tissue. But I never followed up after that.
Losing weight really helped with the GERD, and now several years of 40mg Omeprazole every day...and I pay off missed too long.
Plus now I hear the eosinophils are a known thing, and I've had post-nasal drip since I was 20. Also that maybe my long time problem with dry swallows (maybe dysphagia?) is involved...and maybe I have eosinophilic esophagitis.
I guess it's time to go at this again. Yay. Better to head off the cancer risk now at the tender age of 57.

I would welcome more videos on GI problems e.g. Diverticulitis, IBD, IBS, etc. There are meds available for these, yet the underlying causes for a sudden onset are not always apparent. Knowing which condition is likely based on symptoms would be helpful - like the way Dr. Mike Heffernan discusses heart issues. The role of the gut has been more significant then we thought - even with mental health.

Swallowing issues? I'm no doctor, but this does not sound like GERD. Difficulty swallowing can indicate B12 deficiency, which suggests that insufficient IF (intrinsic factor) is being produced by the parietal cells in the stomach (pernicious anemia.) Please confirm your B12 status and supplement as needed -- low B12 is nothing to mess around with!

Another nice video from “Talking with Docs”. I wish they had spent a little more time trying to differentiate heartburn from possible cardiac chest pain. Typical “classic” heartburn is ofter worse when lying down or after a big meal, and usually occurs at rest, and sometimes is associated with a bitter acid-like taste in your throat or even a chronic cough or hoarseness. But, burning chest discomfort may be cardiac in origin, especially if it occurs with physical exertion, and you have risk factors for heart blockages such as smoking, hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and significant family history for heart blockages. So, if the latter applies to you, you may wish to consider an evaluation with your local cardiologist, especially if you are middle age or older.

I had silent reflux after I had a sleeve gastrectomy. After developing esophageal spasms my surgeon ordered an endoscopy to be done. Good thing I had it done because I had developed ulcers and severe esophagitis. A few months later I was converted to a gastric bypass and the follow up endoscopy showed my esophagus had fully healed.

Stress can be a factor. But it's a minor factor. Visceral fat due to being overweight or obese, or a hiatal hernia, are by far the main reasons a patient might suffer from GERD. The above-mentioned foods that may trigger GERD are simply triggers, not causes.

Let’s not forget reflux can be life threatening. I had it so bad meds didn’t touch it, so I carried the economy sized maalox with me at all times. I also had to sleep sitting upright. One night I must’ve slipped down too far, refluxed, and woke up choking on it. I had a terrible time breathing as I had aspirated and my throat almost closed completely. Needless to say, I had surgery for it shortly after that and I have been able to drink OJ and sleep in a horizontal position since.

I can't understand why he never made it clear what heartburn or reflux is, he just mentioned more than briefly at the end about a problem at the juncture between the stomach and the oesophagus (food pipe). Here's my explanation, there's a band of muscle between the stomach and the oesophagus - called the Lower Esophageal Sphincter or L-E-S, that clamps down to prevent the stomach contents from moving or refluxing upward and burning the lining of the oesophagus. They are a one-way valve. There is almost always a problem here where the muscles don't function optimally. This is a similar problem with varicose veins.

Never had they said anything about the possibility of me getting cancer. I am now concerned that I might need to get a scope more often since I am high risk.😊 I have changed my diet and treat it seriously but I didn’t know about the mint chewing gum. Regular exercise helped a lot. I struggle with heartburn after radiation and chemo for colon cancer so it is a concern. I also take pain medication for a spinal injury that is sublingual and that causes acid reflux. It got worse after I gained weight from the steroids administered with the chemo for nausea. My doctor prescribed medications to reduce acid and to coat the stomach before eating. That helped me get control of it so I could concentrate on changing my habits - no alcohol, no coffee, no eating after 6pm, no sugar, no red sauce as with spaghetti. I can’t say it loud enough - *get a colonoscopy if you are over 40 or showing symptoms of digestive issues, bleeding, etc.* I had signs for two years but Covid restrictions made scheduling a test very difficult so I just let it go. The polyp grew into a tumor. Don’t procrastinate. *Please!*

Great video! After suffering with GERD for years (progressively worse) and I was prescribed Esomeprazole (prilosec) which works great BUT now long term use is causing kidney disease in people (CKD). Also taking this med just re-enforces bad behavior to eat whatever whenever. So, I stopped taking it and SOLVED my heartburn problem for good -- by getting an adjustable bed. I have not had one problem since and its been over a year.

So I had a minor flutter in my throat and the 1st doctor put me PPI's- here's the downside- extremely difficult to get OFF of them. I mean your body stops producing stomach acid (which we now know is necessary for a variety of reasons) - once I tried to wean off- reflux came roaring back-much worse. Ugh. So my new GI doctor- said, " you have a hiatal hernia-go see this surgeon; he can perform a procedure to fix it and end the reflux". He also told me that I was good candidate since my weight was low and always stable. Had the surgery 6 Jun 21- last day of heartburn was 5 Jun. NONE since the procedure. I would never take PPI's again-- total ick. So my hats off to Surgeons- they FIX the problem- medication just masks the symptoms. What was the surgery like? Easy peasy- 1 night in the hospital- home with liquid Tylenol and heating pad for minor discomfort. The only issue was the funky diet (about 12 weeks) and now....Jan 2022- I feel great. Surgeons ROCK!

I personally can tell a difference depending on how much stress I’m under so I try to meditate before bed each night. It helps! I’ve heard stress turns off your proton pump inhibitors or something, causing the acid to leave the stomach.
Also, as a Speech Therapist, I see a lot of people who report heartburn who are edentulous. I encourage them to get dentures so that they can fully masticate their food so that the stomach doesn’t have to work so hard producing acid to break down the meat (if you don’t have teeth, then you are NOT chewing your food up but only gumming it). I often find that edentulous people resort to a meatless diet because meat makes them nauseous. When I educate them from a swallowing perspective, it all makes sense. Once they get dentures and can chew up their meat, they begin to enjoy it again.

    Trigger foods
Some people choose to avoid common trigger foods, such as coffee and chocolate, to alleviate GERD symptoms. However, this approach has little clinical backing, while results vary between individuals.
Some common trigger foods may include:
    - chocolate
    - mint
    - carbonated beverages
    - acidic drinks, such as orange juice and coffee
    - caffeine
    - acidic foods, such as tomato sauce and citrus fruits
    - spicy foods
    - alcohol
People with GERD may choose to try eliminating each food type from their diet to see if their symptoms improve. If symptoms do not improve, they can incorporate the food type back into their diet.
In 2022 guidelines for diagnosing and managing GERD, the American College of Gastroenterology suggests avoiding trigger foods to help manage GERD symptoms. However, they also state that there is little evidence to support this recommendation.

    • @canucksway
      @canucksway Před rokem

Foods that might worsen GERD or reflux esophagitis symptoms include:
      - meat, which tends to be high in saturated fats
      - oils and high fat foods, which may cause the sphincter at the bottom of the esophagus to relax, and also slow down digestion
      - high glycemic index foods, which are typically high in refined sugars
      Milk
A 2021 reviewTrusted Source examined the relationship between cow’s milk allergy (CMA) and GERD symptoms in children.
The researchers found that children with CMA often experienced symptoms of GERD after consuming cow’s milk. Ongoing research is examining whether this also applies to adults. However, CMA is rare in adults because many allergic children develop a tolerance for cow’s milk by the age of 6 yearsTrusted Source.
The evidence for a link between reflux symptoms and milk is mixed. Some studiesTrusted Source even suggest consuming milk is associated with lower rates of nonerosive reflux disease.
However, people who experience regular discomfort or bloating after eating dairy products with cow’s milk may find that eliminating them from their diet reduces these symptoms.

Hi Darya. It may relate more to the excess saliva. Thanks for watching and subscribing

I've been on Omeprazole since 2003, had ablation in 2015 for pre-cancer. I'm checked every year from 2015-2022. Now they want to go 5 years which I feel is too far out. I also have gastritis. The gerd still continues. Is there something better than Omeprazole and is this a lifetime of taking medication? Any suggestions?

Sorry to hear this. The PPIs seem to be th best we have and often are lifelong. Removing food triggers helps some but often there is no specific cure. Best of luck

Hi Alma. That is tricky. Avoid triggers line Dr Arya mentioned. Raise the head of your bed a little. Maybe consider seeing someone about the specific cause. Good luck. Thanks for watching and subscribing

Very interesting. None of the mentioned substances have caused acid reflux in my case. If I eat walnuts or some cured meats I need to reach for the tums.
