    I visited the US sixty two years ago when I was 8 years old. I remember setting out from New York behind a gigantic GG1, its flashing sparks lighting up the tunnel walls like lightning, and then waking in my sleeping berth to the haunting sound of a steam locomotive wailing through the night ahead, and seeing a carpet of smoke laid across the dawn fields. It was a K4. Sometime when I slept the locos had changed. Wonderful memories. That sound still tingles my spine. Thank you.

    That train is gorgeous. If you'd rather look at a diesel then at this, you've got problems.. Just a magnificent amount of moving steel and power. Nice video man

    I remember going to the Railroaders' Museum in Altoona PA to watch this come in! It was awesome to see!

    It's a true shame that this locomotive only operated for one year in excursion service, I hope that PRR 1361 makes a return to service in the future after receiving it's necessary rebuild which I've heard is currently being performed now.

    The rain, plays a special roll in the ghostly atmosphere of seeing this rare specimen on the rails. Something nostalgic about a K4 on a rainy day... Or any steam engine for that matter.
    I'd so love seeing this engine return to excursion service. These videos of it are really great to watch. Hope that it'll come out to play again in the future.

    PRR 1361, and all of the other 424 K4s steam locomotives will go down as some of the most beautiful machinary ever seen. Hopefully 1361 and 3750 return to their former glory again very soon! Long live the PRR!

      1361 will be back in operation and 3750 will get a cosmetic restoration at some point.

    Pennsylvania K4 4-6-2 No. 1361 was passenger excursion and restored in overhaul.

    What needs to happen is exactly what happened to Tornado. Someone needs to build a "new" K4 for preservation purposes, and give it the next number in the line.

    @HaloCE14 Yes, the crown sheet is on top of the firebox. Because of the Belpaire style box, it tends to be thinner than on other styles of steam locomotives and this freaks the FRA out. Since the crown sheet failure in Gettysburg in 1994 they have been psycho about that and boiler specs. This is a moot point by now because Strasburg RR is doing and has done many locomotives with this style of box and kept the FRA inspectors happy. Altoona has a ton of pie on their face over this. What a mess.

    @Kagami101 their is a company in germany that still builds steam engines, they built the boiler for the A1 tornado

    Not to forget the massive boiler re-rebuild, any running gear work, whatever else she needed and anything else that got fucked up by a certain place. Either way, it would be great to see pennsy steam out of a main but lots of cash to get'er done. Hopefully they get her back together at least.

    @HaloCE14 Its not like it has been sitting outside for years, it has before, but they got rid of the damage before she broke down. I have faith that Altoona will get her running again and will be able to do mainline steam excursions. Altoona just got over their heads with the restoration project because they expected it to be quick and simple, but the damn FRA wants everything to be perfect and over estimated in order to be safe. The FRA wants a new crown sheet but 1361 has ran with it thin.

  • @JuddKramer
    @JuddKramer Před 11 lety

    True. They are built much differently. They did build a replica steamer for an excursion rail line on the east coast at one point.

    Almost sounds like Mt. Rainier Scenic #5's Ashton 3-chime since Pennsylvania used Ashton valve whistles on all their K4's, M1's, as well as some of their freight engines.

    @Kagami101 if we did that we would yield the Chinese more advanced tech then they have now lol plus you would have a American design built in another country (outsource) plus inferior steel then they originaly used. The PRR was known for using high grade steel (for its time) on their high speed locomotives

    @HaloCE14 What exactly the crown sheet? Is it the giant steel plate that sits above the fire and separates the fire from the water?

    If the 1361 were ever to operate on those lines again, both the engine and its tender would require roller bearings to meet Norfolk Southern's requirements. That I gotta see!

    The Chinese build quality of Steam locomotives is a completely new topic. China actually kept on using steam-powered locomotives well into the late 1990's in their developing areas.

  • @packr72
    @packr72 Před 11 lety

    What's the big deal, it's not like the K4 was even revolutionary for it's time, it was a pretty simple machine overall which was why they were so successful. Maybe the steel would be of a lesser grade, but with the advancement of technology the engine would probably be better, with lighter parts and advanced alloy's
