This is the take of most real Celtics fans that have watched the games of Tatum. He has been great this year with sacrificing his scoring by passing to his teammates, rebounding, and defense to win games. He’s not just a scorer.

JT has shown his maturity this series. He has proven in previous seasons that he can score when needed to, but he has matured and realized that their best chance of winning the championship is by sharing the ball. That's why I am baffled by analyst who criticize his play this postseason when in fact he is doing what is needed to win. Like you said, if a pass makes for an easier shot why take the difficult shot (even if he can make it)? His game has matured.

I was talking about this to my peers while watching. I told them "look at how Tatum set up Dwhite, JB, and Horford for 8 straight points". He drove and kick to Dwhite and Horford for 2 wide-open three-pointers and set up JB for an easy layup. All in three possessions, the Celtics scored 8 easy points and he didn't even need to score. This is what people who just look at the scoreboard for points per game do not see. Also, Tatum has proven time and time again that he can be the alpha scorer when needed. He dropped KD and Kyrie averaging 30+ ppg, dropped 47 on Giannis in an elimination game, and dropped 51 on Embiid in a Game 7 elimination game. What more can you ask the guy for?

Thank you Jason for highlighting this. As a Celtics fan, I believe JT does not get enough credit for how unselfishly he plays the game which allows for JB, DWhite, KP and Jrue to a lesser extent to all still flourish offensively. Yes at times he can be way too passive but like you said, he is the perfect superstar for this team because of his willingness to defer, and I don't think guys like Luka or Ant's playstyles can get the most out of a roster like this even if their individual talent might be greater than Tatum's

JT is an enabler/generalist. He doesn't need the ball to impact the game nor is he a bulldozer in his physicality. Too long has the talking points about superstars been all about points and crashing the boards and JT will never be like that all the time.
If a team consistently has only one person getting high personal stats, it often means that it is imbalanced and prone to injury and game planning. Boston's recipe for success is a balanced approach to the game amongst everyone in its starting 5 and JT is the hub of the best offense and second best defense in the NBA.

  • @Docrivershater

When the ball is moving around and we’re running multiple actions we get into better stuff than traditional pick and roll when the defense can load up in your direction. As soon as Tatum starts putting up 33-34 ppg he will get doubled. Thus Tatum should find one of his fellow cusp All-Stars* to hit for an open 3 (Celtic's TOP8 rotation players can all hit 3s).
*All 5 Celtic starters are Top50ish players, or cusp All-Stars
Does Tatum still take too many ISO shots or Pull- Up jumpers early in the shot clock? YES, but he is getting better at it.

Jason, you're the man! This video has great basketball analysis and is fair on all fronts. This was great to hear because earlier this year, you mentioned that you thought Tatum had a chance to develop into the best player in the league by age 29 or 30. Then to hear you at say that you no longer believe that (because of Ant Edwards' ascension) was.... very perplexing.
There are only 2 players that I can definitively say are BETTER than Jayson Tatum, and that's Joker & Giannis.
Luka is such a liability on defense, and he gets subbed out for defensive specialists in late game situations. He doesn't move whatsoever without the ball. People are so enamored of his counting stats that people overlook that sometimes they're very empty!
Embiid is certainly more dominant but the dude is rarely available & his best postseason runs are disappoints for Tatum led teams.
Shai & Ant are awesome but JT is several inches taller and offers more positional versatility.
Jayson does have poor shot selection at times and could absolutely show more aggression at times as well. I'd like to see him take on more of an SGA shot selection where he bullies defenders 15 feet and closer.
    Thank you for the video

Let that marinate a bit, leads in points and rebounds plays solid to spectacular defense at times and is playing point guard at 6'8. He brings the ball up when there are guards on the floor and initiates the offense almost always. The O grinds to a halt when he sits and its not because the isn't on the floor to iso. It's because he is the team's facilitator.

Jason, if we really look honestly at recent history, the Celtics became the JT and JB team three years ago. Before that it was a mixed bag with Kyrie, Gordon, Kemba and even IT..once JT and JB came off their rookie contracts and extensions, the weight of the franchise is now on them. Now they are being paid as franchise players. They lost to LBJ twice in the first 3 ECF (when they weren't the franchise players) and now once in the Finals to Steph (since they are). Losing to greats is not a problem. MJ lost to Boston and Detroit before becoming Jordan. Yes, you can say that against GS it was there for the taking, yet it was a learning point. I would say the last three years are a true sample size of the development of JT and JB "under pressure" and how they develop and perform. Yes, the offense can become stagnant and they can tend to take the foot of the gas defensively at times, yet the team is delivering with what is in front of them.

The finals was disappointing 2 years ago, but ultimately it was a successful season in terms of expectations. Last year was the first year in the Jays era that it was championship or bust. We failed, quite embarrassingly, but it's pretty clear that Marcus Smart was a cancer on the team, and we won 5 straight elimination games at one point. So the legacy of postseason failure is very premature.

Yes,they have more to get done this postseason, but they have done what they had to do in the first two rounds. If they win the championship, alot of people are gonna look stupid. Also, look at Tatum's last 3 games, all wins. He has done everything, rebounds and setting guys up. Hopefully KP can stay healthy for the rest of the playoffs after he comes back.

  • @UnconventionalReasoning

When playing a team with a DPOY finalist and other okay defenders, being able to keep the attention of the elite defender allows everyone else to have more success. This worked against Miami, winning by [20, 20, 14, 34]. Tatum also out-rebounded Bam in 3 of 5 games. It was even easier with the decimated Cleveland team. With the Knicks, he would tie up OG if healthy. With the Pacers, who is their elite defender?

Again talent not Tatum issue it’s his lack of agression at times physically. Also his playstle… bad fundamentals.

Couldn’t agree more, Tatum is the PERFECT star for a team that can consistently make the conference finals and always lose to teams with a better star

Tatum is a great all around player but lacks balls. Brown is an elite scorer but mediocre to crap in every other area, a losing and low iq player. White, Porzingis, Jrue, Horford are the best 3-6 rotation pieces in the NBA by far. That’s what set them apart. Mazzulla is math nerd who is on the spectrum, and perhaps the worst in-game adjustment coach in the NBA. The result is an uber talented team who wins off sheer talent but is undisciplined and loses focus far too often. The will lose to Denver in 6.

LOL nice back handed compliment. I’m sure your dislike of the Celtics doesn’t affect your opinions and predictions AT ALL. 😂😂😂😂 Your comment has been invalidated.

Aren’t you a Nuggets fan? Shouldn’t you be worrying about the Wolves/Mavs????? If you TRULY in the deepest part of your heart felt that the Celtics were no threat to win the Finals then you wouldn’t be here trolling in the form of off handed compliments. However you will conveniently disappear from the internet when the Nuggets inevitably lose to either Wolves/Mavs/Celtics. Troll somewhere else.

So many Tatum glazers coming out of the wood works cuz he finally had a good couple of games. I think Tatum still deserves the criticism though. It’s not that I think he’s actually a bad player, it’s that he is capable of so much more than what his actual output is. He’s so crafty at getting to the rim and finishing, a really good passer and rebounder, a decent three point shooter, and a great defender. But the issue is he consistently doesnt try and chooses to take bad shots and iso. I think Mazzulla definitely should be fired for not giving his players any offensive or defensive sets, but Tatum needs to be the player he has all the talent to be.

Mazzulla unlocked Tatum and he's the architect of the best offense and second best defense in the NBA. You accuse people of glazing when it's actuallyyou who doesn't care to even know the facts.

You just described Nikola Jokic. He ain't that. The actual problem with Tatum is that he plays too often like Kobe ...... and he's not half as good at that stuff as Kobe. He also shoots the ball like he thinks he's Curry ..... and he's not half as good at shooting as Curry.
So what's left? A dude who could make up a lot of those margins at the foul line ... something he doesn't seem to want to do.

Celtics had the so cold alpha in Irving and that fell apart and then there were Kemba Walker years and that fell apart. This year and the next couple of years is when Celtics need to secure their fairy deserved championship trophies. Go Cs ❤🍀🏆
