Yes, he made Quo sound like a modern rock band, at least in his first 6-7 years with the band, just listen to Who Gets The Love. I did notice that he didn't look too much involved in the late 90's, so I wasn't too surprised when he left, and he confirms those guesses of mine in this interview.

Firstly let me say that I was a HUGE Fan of Spud, Nuff, Rick and Francis.
Spud was 'released' from Quo in 1982 during the recording of Quo's 1982 Album.
When the Frantic Four Played 'Live' it seemed to most of the Fans of that era that Quo were untouchable. Their set always energetic and beyond. Powerful, Fast and incredible Fun. Quo then was like 'Family' to us all. All Four Members of Quo giving their ALL to ensure WE all had a Great Time and hats off to them.
However, to me, regardless of the personal feelings of losing Spud and then Nuff, Rhino and Jeff Rich pushed Quo UP A GEAR! Sorry Frantic Four devotees.
The Energy of a Quo Gig actually went UP, not down and Technically both Rhino and Jeff are s**t HOT Musicians so I applaud them both for keeping the Spirit of Quo alive.
The Album 'In the Army Now' was incredibly well recorded and well produced by Pip Williams.
Did Pip Play Guitar on this Album or were there Session Musician's Playing on this Album?
Personally I LOVED Two Parfitt Tracks on ITAN (End of the Line & Overdose).....or did Francis and Bob Young really Compose these Song's??!!
Initially I hated the Single 'In the Army Now', but then I started to love it and I'm very glad that it remains in their set today.
Jeff I salute you. You were and probably still are BRILLIANT!!
Well done in your time with Quo and really saddened that had such a devastating effect on your Marriage and missed time with your Children as they were growing up!! It's tough isn't it.
    Same thing happened to me!!!

Pretty much all long established bands evolve, their line up changes and their musical style moves along.
Remember Roy Lynes was in the original line up from psychedelia to denim so why isn't it the Frantic Five. When he left it wasn't long before Andy Bown stepped in, firstly as a session musician and then a full time member so I ask again, why don't people refer to them as the Frantic Five?
Andy has been in the band for 45 years, Rhino for around 40 years but for some reason a small number of "Fans" won't accept them even though their tenure is longer than both Spud and Nuff combined.

IMO the Frantic Four reunion tour was born as part of an out of court settlement between Quo and Lancaster/Couglan. I could be too simplistic about it, but if this interview with Jeff was filmed in 2011-2012, and he's saying there's no love lost between the two parties, then I think it was "we'll do this tour, you can take a healthy cut and then you can call off the lawyers and we don't have to hear from you again."
I saw them in 2013 and they were great, but that's how I think it happened. I'm probably being too simplistic (and cynical).

Never thought of it that way but it makes sence. Only bump was that Rick enjoyed it and wanted more and so there went the Rossi Parfitt deep friendship. Shame.

@@hgn2321 Francis has said he enjoyed doing it (the Frantic Four tours), even though he was more than reluctant to do it.
Relations between Francis and Rick were severely strained well before that (not as bad as Glimmer Twins circa 1980s), but the former's refusal to go back to FF permanently really upset Rick.
Francis suggested to the other three that they should go out as "Status Quo PLC" (Parfitt Lancaster Couglan), but nothing came of it.

      Andy, you've nailed it.
Rick thought he was viewed as being #2 in the Band.
Rick thought he had to drink to excess and take copious amounts of drugs in order to 'live' the Rock Star lifestyle.
Whereas all Rick had to do was realise that he was the best and greatest Rhythm Guitarist of all time.
He was a genius song writer.
He was one of the best Rock Singers of all time.
      He was ridiculously handsome.
Rick was the archetypal Rock Star.
He had it all, including..........insecurities in abundance.
Ordinary people don't write, record and perform in the World's greatest Rock Band.
Rick wrote and co-wrote some of the best songs recorded in music history.
They could be hard Rock songs or beautiful and delicate ballads.
It was Rick Parfitt that transformed a hokey, redneck, country song into a classic, a worldwide favourite - sing a long Rocker called "Rockin' all over the World"
You can't be better than the best and Rick Parfitt was the best.
      RIP - Rick Parfitt
