Great analysis wasn’t it? In the interest of new fans reading these comments: The original was not by Lara Fabian.. Serge Lama wrote and sang this autobiographical song about 50 years ago
when he heard FORESTELLA’s version he shared the video on all platforms in France and told people to watch this version
this is what he wanted to convey in his song.

@@hildommar I didn’t know that 😐 of course Forestella’s version was AMAZING, but honestly there’s no better version than Lara’s version to me đŸ”„ the emotion and the storytelling she put to the song was INSANE.

Really appreciate your in-depth reaction/analysis! Forestella is a South Korean crossover group known as the "Kings of Harmonies," and the members from left to right are Ko Woorim (classically trained bass), Kang Hyungho (rocker, countertenor- had no formal vocal training), Cho Mingyu (classically trained tenor, group leader), and Bae Doohoon (tenor/baritone, musical actor). Their more classically-styled performances include "Hijo de la Luna," "Nella Fantasia," "In Un'Altra Vita," and "Dell'amore Non Si Sa." They've also performed stunning covers of "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Sound of Silence," "Scarborough Fair" (Simon and Garfunkel), "Inner Universe" (video game/anime OST), "Time in a Bottle" (Jim Croce), and "Maldita Sea Mi Suerte" (Marc Anthony).

The accordion was a great decision it brought out a French feeling. It feels that you are in France where this kind of combination is very romantic as a French speaker & from a musical family background l loved this performance. The intro of the accordion introduces the french ambiance.

Forestella are South Koreans. In order of coming in: Ko Woorim, base, he was an opera student when this group was formed, then Bo Dohoon, musical actor, more of a pop vibe, third, Cho Mingyu, a very accomplished opera singer, who was told he wouldn’t have primary roles in opera because of the timber of his voice (tenor leggiore), and then started to explore the pop opera line, and he ended up choosing each member of this team (except the last one) as he kept winning the different stages of the competition; and last to come in is Kang Hyungho, who has an incredible range (which he didn’t quite display here); he had always wanted to be a singer, but his mom refused, so he was a chemical engineer when he auditioned for the phantom singer competition! You may want to listen to « Hijo de la Luna » next to hear what he can do.
Forestella as a group are so versatile, they sing opera, pop, rock and roll and make beautiful covers of classic songs and also have their own songs, « Save our lives », and « utopia »; this last one being a vocal masterpiece in my opinion.
    Happy listening!

“Je suis Malade”, now a french classic, was written by famous French singer & songwriter Serge Lama together with composer/singer Alice Dona in 1973.
This is based on his own experience and he was the original performer, hence some lyrics are a bit male-oriented (eg my mother leaves me, whiskies, I pour my blood in your body,
).
When Serge Lama had a dinner with Alice Dona and told her about his obsessive love that was leading to a road block, she came back home and compose the music in a couple of hours.
The morning after, she presented him the music and he wrote the lyrics in
 20 minutes.
Serge Lama was the original performer in 1973, it started to be promoted on the radio, and the song was brought to fame only when, a few months after, Dalida covered it. She was an absolute mega star in France, another emotional powerhouse, and this song resonated very much with her own feelings. Her success with this song transformed it into a french classic, and started to make it famous abroad.
But it is Lara Fabian that really made this song a very popular song in many countries with her cover in the mid 90s.
At that time Dalida had already passed away, but Serge Lama was (and is) still alive. Dalida and Serge were two inspirations for Lara, so she sent an audio copy to Serge of her version. She was unknown at that time in France but he was so impressed with her vocal skills and her emotions rendering that he invited her in France to sing it as a duet. They became good friends.
Lara has made some subtle changes to the song that gave it even more power and Serge Lama adopted these in his later interpretations.
The 1999 version ("From Lara with Love" Concert in Montreal)
    czcams.com/video/eHSyk4SGtuY/video.html
is legendary internationally and has attracted many artists to do a cover, even from non french-speaking countries.
The most recent ones I am aware of are from italian singer Giulia Falcone, from the korean singer Choi Sung Hoon or from this korean band Forestella.
Lara is used to perform the song very differently in each of her tour and for instance this 2003 version is even more dramatic

Thank you for your expert analysis of Forestella. ("classically-"vocal-crossover-group - rock/pop/opera) They are considered the kings of harmonies and simply masters every genre and every style. Technically highly qualified, they are known for unexpected reinterpretations of legendary songs. Adding a twist and their own spice to it (always respecting the original), are they very creative, set new accents and the result is always TOP. From their rather classical repertoire, I definitely recommend their version of "Hijo de la Luna" and "Scarborough Fair". This is where their unique voices and vocal ranges (from soprano to basso profundo) come into their own.

These boys are masters at taking well known songs and putting their very unique flair on them. Their harmonies give me chills. I have to admit that it was Woorim (that amazingly smooth bass) that drew me in, but they are all so talented and versatile that i cant help but love them all. They are all so different in tone, but they magically blend together perfectly. To think it was an elimination competition show that put them all together. Cho Mingyu (the Tenor with the great pronunciation) is the mastermind behind the team.
Your analysis is everything I've been looking for with this group, if you've done other Forestella songs then I'm definitely subscribing!

This isn't simple reaction, it is an expert analysis and made me understand why I love what I already love - this version of one of my favourite songs of all times (which makes me very picky with the covers). I am not musically trained and I just perceived that this is a special arrangement of the song, but you explaining the technical aspects was like a lightbulb moment for me.
Many people recommended many good covers of theirs so plenty of choice, but If I were to pick one or two, one would be Scarborough Fair (I like the arrangement and how every voice shines; Kang Hyung Ho's (the countertenor can show off more than in other songs his high notes) and Warriors (this song could potentially be very boring, but they make it interesting somehow) and both songs, as most of theirs are a show in itself each. There is a whole world that they build in just a couple of minutes that a song lasts.

BTW they don't follow the original singing techniques, sounds, music arrangements and etc for all of those songs they cover. it is like many other singers who do covers will always try to make it as their own.

Dear Jess, I've been a real fan of your reactions, such a lovely mix between a technical analysis and emotions. It's rare! But... I really had to nail this one... This is also the first time I wrote comments here. This interpretation here is so full of clichés (to stay with the accordeon music, which is also a false cliché, since it used to be played even more on Italy or even Germany! But has stuck to France because of the strong tradition of Street music), and pathos that it this song gets really painful to listen to the end. What I find particularly 'not in line' with your analysis of the Lara Fabians interprétation is how you really adored the fine line she took between extreme emotions and the technical difficulty of keeping tone and living on in the song. In this version, we have the opposite: painful lingering on overdone emotions that we, as other than Korean listeners, find hard to accept. 'do the singers really think I'm so stupid to not understanding what is going on in the lyrics?'. I'm sorry Jess, I really don't buy this one. I'm not a huge fan of late Lara Fabian, but maybe you could buy yourself back with her concert 'from Lara with love which is now available entirely. Keep up the really great work you do. Me.
