    Bexar is the county that San Antonio resides in. And the pronunciation is like you said, Bexar (bear). Great review Nick. Go Spurs Go!

  • @davidkbailey
    @davidkbailey Před 2 lety +32

    Texas did not retain the original pronunciation of “Tay-has.” It has been anglicized to “Tex-az.” Bexar county retained, mostly, the original pronunciation of “Bay-har.” Those syllables are then slurred together into “Bear.” Things like this happen when languages collide.

    I used to live i Bexar County, and that's a Spanish name that got bastardized by the Anglos.
    San Fernando de Béxar functioned as provincial capital from 1773 to 1824, but in subsequent years its political authority waned. By 1837, when it became a county seat of the Republic of Texas, it had been renamed San Antonio

    We Texans have a blind spot. We often forget that everything here isn't commonly known outside Texas. Kind of like New Yorkers.
    Bexar was named by the Spanish, so the x is pronounced more like an h. It's technically pronounced like "Beahaar." Think Oxaca in Mexico. But, Texans just say Bear. We suck worse at pronouncing all the German named places.

    I feel like this is like a douk douk. I love my douk douk for how thin it is, which makes it easier to carry. I wish there a little bit more coverage of the douk douk as an EDC knife.

    • @lexington505
      @lexington505 Před 2 lety +2

      For a while a Douk Douk was my EDC, partly because they are so thin (also I'm a sucker for old school unpretentious but functional folders). In respects other than size - for example steel, fit and finish, and of course price point - this is in a completely different league. I agree that the Douk Douk is underappreciated, however. Many collectors today would consider the design dated (which it obviously is, but to me that's a big part of the charm) and it has the additional liability of being French, and therefore not on the radar of most Americans. It's a solid performer at its very modest price point however and has simple elegance and functionality that is all its own. Gas stations across America are selling Chinese junk at a comparable price that can't hold a candle to this little gem.

    Bexar is the county of which San Antonio is the county seat. It’s pronounced “BAY-har” in the original Spanish, but many people in Texas pronounce it “BAY-are” or “Bare.” Rockwall is another county in Texas. Fun trivia: Rockwall county is the smallest county (in land area) in Texas.
    Tactile could potentially name 252 other models after Texas counties without having to repeat itself.

    To increase the force to close the blade, as you mentioned, they just should use a "half-lock" mechanism where a small projection on the end of the backspring exerts pressure on a corresponding indent in the heel of blade when the knife is open. This half-lock can often be found on Spanish and Frensh traditionals, of which the Laguiole should be the most famos one. If done correctly it can be very helpful withoud adding extra costs and still leaving the knife to be a slipjoint.

    You nailed this one Nick. Mine arrived about 2 weeks ago and I love it, but action, nail nick could be improved and a pocket clip would be awesome. Mine arrived with a faulty pivot screw, but guys from Tactile were super nice about it (I was accidentally shipped a screw from a faulty batch) and new one is on the way (I hack-fixed it with a spacer). In total - great light use gentleman’s knife that will be living in my work laptop bag. I am looking forward to the future knives from Tactical - they are onto something here.

      I think what he is saying is that the pivot screw was faulty and the rest is a personal matter. Sending a replacement screw is great customer service and considering there aren't thousands being produced by automation every day, this is acceptable for a niche knife.

    Nick, you make a good point about the pronunciation. While the “x” is indeed silent, it doesn’t make sense since it’s derived from the Spanish word “Béjar” while Texas is derived from the Spanish word “Tejas”. Either both should have a silent “x”, or both should have the “x” pronounced.

  • @KurdishHypercurve
    @KurdishHypercurve Před 2 lety +2

    I'm glad to see a renaissance of the humble slipjoint, mainly because I'm UK based so the EDC options are limited when it comes to snazzy knives that are at the cutting edge of knife talk. I got myself a Bexar and it is a fantastic looking and ergonomically perfect knife. I do really like it a lot. The only real issues I have with my one concerns the finish on the blade, which has a particularly uneven edge and unsteady grind.
    Otherwise I agree the Bexar is a gem of a knife - if they fix the blade/QC issues, as they assure me they are doing - and could be MUCH improved if they added not only a pocket clip but also a ricasso so your fingers feel more secure when using the blade.
    A ricasso would honestly be a HUGE design improvement and added safety feature. The grooves in the blade could also be extended to allow the fitment of an optional thumb stud. Just like the Chinese made Real Steel Luna has (and which also has a solid ricasso and flawless/perfect /laser of a blade edge).
    But, truth be told, my bias towards aesthetics means I will more likely pull out the Bexar than any other slipjoint at this moment in time. It is an amazing new entry to this large niche sector that is often overlooked by knaf collectors.

    Nick, as a north Texan the Bexar prounounciation confused me as well when I went down there for college. You are definetly not the only one, but I do like naming knives after counties. Perhaps next we will get Travis or Harris, might be easier to pronounce!

    I am struggling to get excited about this blade until I compare the steel to the steel on victorinox alox. A victorinox alox with 20cv 3" blade, vg10 scissors/can opener/bottle opener would be interesting. This blade is confusing to me. Very sharp blade with excellent edge profile with no way to hold onto it well. That blade at under 3" would be ideal for skinning squirrels but the handle seems too thin to grip it safely as a skinner. Probably good edgewise for carving but the profile is too thin for meaty hands to be able to use comfortably. No choil? Come on, even dragonfly, as small as it is, has one allowing excellent retention even in xl hands. It is too small/light to keep in pocket without a clip or attached to a lanyard. I would hate to have $200 blade slide out of my pocket while on a noisy train or a crowded bus. Not a fan of tiny sheaths. Priorities for me: 1) ergonomics: comfortable and excellent retention in hand. 2) good quality steel 3) ability to secure it via clip or lanyard.
    The blade profile may convince someone that this is a plausible self defense option but the handle is too thin. In Texas we have BBQ guns. This looks like a BBQ knife.

    Texas is Téjas in Spanish (Teh-has). Bexar then should be Béjar (Beh-haar) which is a very common surname here in Spain. My guess there was a Señor Béjar around in that county early on. Sorry, I am a pedant, I'm not even Spanish but 100% Irish.
    Love the knife and agree with all the points. Lefties never win, we can only draw. With the knife I'd go for an included slip instead of an included clip. It's a different concept and we can't be turning everything into the same thing.
    However, I do have a Victorinox Alox single bladed 91mm knife which has a better spring tension and which costs only 25 dollars.
    Whilst I really dig this piece, I do think a better pull and a nice soft leather slip should non-negotiable at this price range.
    Still and all, I appreciate Nick's European focuss and I think knives like the one reviewed above are tip-top everyday carries (more sexy too, ask any lady).

    Just got mine in Magnacut in today. I don’t have many slip joints to have a good reference but it is a beautiful knife. Whether its QC or just got lucky, I do not have any of the gap along the spine issues that you seem to. The only thing I didn’t like out of the box was the edge. It was one of the worst factory edges I’ve ever received. But on the bright side I got to experience sharpening Magnacut much earlier than expected.

  • @JustIn-op6oy
    @JustIn-op6oy Před 2 lety

    On a more specific note - the issue with the action I think could be cleared up with a 2/3rds stop instead of the half stop. For whatever reason, the slipjoints I have handled with a 2/3 or 3/4 stop intead of the more typical 1/2 stop have all had excellent spring tension.

    • @JustIn-op6oy

    I've got one of these, got it from the preorder. It came with a wildly off-center blade (it is rubbing a scale!), the blade wasn't sharp enough to cut printer paper, the grind was far from symmetrical, and the feeling when open was very weak with significant up and down blade play. I emailed with them and they were very responsive and quickly sent me a return label, totally accommodating. I agree the milling on the handle is very nice and the overall design is quite compelling, the bead is nice, too, but was an add-on. I've got it boxed up to send back but have been having second thoughts because I know these are issues I can mostly deal with...but why should I have to for $200? But to hear this called a "great" slip joint? Nah. I've bought stuff from antique shops that blow this away. I love that this thing is fully US made and really want these guys to to better. Meh.

    Nick, I am thinking that if you were able to replace the lanyard with some sort of split ring (like found on Victorinox knives) you could use a P-7 pocket clip to hang the knife from the edge of the pocket so it would just hang down into the pocket. I do that with all of my SAK and ALOX knives; also with my Mercator Otter 'Black Kat' knives. Works great and is very discreet to any looking....

    Not a fan of slippies to start with, and sure couldn't possibly be as svelte with a lock up, but with no clip...........I can't overlook that. All of a sudden, its either a pouch carry, (that tends to negate the slim design), or dwelling horizontally at the bottom of a pocket. So....... close but no cigar IMO.
