    Since there aren't many tutorials on psytrance mixing, I've decided to make one.
    We will be going through 4 different basic transitions between 2 songs using EQ, filter and the loop function. I used Traktor Pro 2 and a Denon MC3000 to do the tutorial, but the transitions can be made with any software, controller or even CDJs. This tutorial is meant for those who already know the basics of djing but are a bit lost when trying to mix psy.
    While these are basic transitions, the idea is to show different kind of mixes than the old boring intro/outro mix.
    Next tutorial using effects: • How to Mix Psytrance: ...
    Please comment, share and subscribe if you like.
    If this tutorial is appreciated I will make more.

    Lets be honest, there are so many of us here that would have lost interest in mixing Psytrance without this video. The raw basics presented in 7 minutes. It is so good. In my opinion you don't need more and maybe you shouldn't even watch more, its the foundation to create your own style.

      Totally agree. Typed "psytrance transitions" into a search bar and found this video on a reddit post from 8 years ago. Still relevant. Adding echo on the FX and using crunch on the hi-pass also do wonders too as just layers onto this foundation.

    Well if you are used to listen to psytrance (or any electronic music) you will clearly notice when a new phrase comes in. Every 8 bars (32 beats) something happens, sometimes is a big change in the track, sometimes is just a new sound added and sometimes is just a cymbal crash that's telling you "HERE starts a new phrase". Start paying more attention to what you listen and you'll get it easily =)

      my problem on finding out this new phrase coming in was IDing what a phrase was! lol

  • @guitarfreeeekjeuh
    @guitarfreeeekjeuh Před 3 lety +2

    Cool video! But quick little tip for anyone trying that last transition, start the loop 1 bar (or beat) later so you don’t have that constant ringing cymbal/crash. That way it isn’t as obvious that you’re transitioning another song.

  • @Sychro
    @Sychro  Před 11 lety +6

    You have the basics here, just experiment yourself. Last transition uses the filter to slowly hi pass the track while the other is building up. You can also try mixing only with the filter. For example, start highpassing A, while slowly add some low-end from B (start with the filter at full left position)... then slowly turn both knobs clockwise.

  • @Sychro
    @Sychro  Před 11 lety +3

    Sure mate, just keep thinking out of the box, keep experimenting. These are just ideas I'm showing. Make your own way. And listen to psytrance, is freaking amazing !

  • @Sychro
    @Sychro  Před 11 lety +2

    The Denon is the one I use. It's very solid, nothing cheap. But you can start with any midi controller. I started with a cheap Hercules mp3 E2, so yes... just be sure it has the Traktor mapping, so you wont have to build it yourself.

    my word, DJing is so much easier than it used to be. trying to keep 2 psy tunes in for ages using old vinyl was always fun ;) none of this 10 second trasitions and auto cues etc.
    thats why psy trance used to be one of the hardest genres to mix.

    • @jasonbritt2497
      @jasonbritt2497 Před 6 lety

      PsyTrance is still pretty rough to mix because of all the synth leads going on. Not as hard as it used to be by a long shot. Fortunately back then I was mixing UK hardhouse mostly but that gave me a pretty good foundation.

  • @Sychro
    @Sychro  Před 11 lety +1

    Yes, they are in the same key. This works also on harmonic compatible keys, like 1 fifth above/below. But if they are in totally incompatible keys you would have to do quick cut and drop or find 2 tracks that really go well together even if they are not in compatible keys.

    Thank you. Yes, each bar has 4 beats, so 8 bars are 32 beats, a typical phrase. Regarding keys, search "harmonic mixing" on google. I don't like call them "rules", there are no rules. A tutorial on mixing progressive is coming, but to put it in a few words, the transitions in progressive are slower than full on. Slowly and progressively (duh!) mixing the next tune in. Stay tuned for the next tutorial. Thanks!

  • @Sychro
    @Sychro  Před 11 lety +1

    The MC3000 works just okay with Traktor Pro 2. You need to download the mapping from Denon website and then import it into TP2. DJ Software is a matter of choice, but I'd definitely go for TP2 instead of VDJ. Go to Denon website and ask in the forum if you can't make it work with Traktor.

    It should be noted in this that track A is a twilight/night time full on track and track B is a full on track so that beginners can recognize the sub genres being played here. A lot of the principals are generally the same however I mix Psychedelic aka uptempo psy which is often mistaken for full on and I use 32 bar mixes to create a progressive sound that makes it hard to tell when one song ends and the next starts.
    These mixes are very good and manage to create that progressive flow without using long mixes, there are other ways but this is a great tutorial.

Sometimes when you unplug the USB and plug it back in, it requires you to do this again when you start Traktor. Hope that helps!

    Thanks mate! When mixing psytrance you have to think outside of the box as it's not a "standard intro/outro structured" genre. Just go crazy and experiment with it. Yes, I've used mixmeister a lot in the past, but just to prepare a mixed playlist for a party. I still use it for that purpose, but only when doing "normal" parties. In psy raves I like to mix it live, much more fun. Don't be afraid of buying a cheap midi controller and start mixing with Traktor/Serato/Whatever. Good luck! =)
