  • On June 6th, 1931, the biggest bank failure in the history of the United States occurred in Toledo Ohio. Five of the six banks in Toledo closed their doors and could not grant ANY withdrawal requests to the public. While the closing of the banks was one thing, the story is a lot more sinister and goes a lot deeper than most would think. This was surely a day to remember in the Glass City, yet, it's an oft-forgotten moment of the Great Depression.

And so began the credit union movement. Northwest Ohio has many credit unions that embrace the cooperative spirit such as Democratic Member Control, autonomy and independence, financial education, training and information as well as cooperation among cooperatives and concern for the community. It's all a part of the credit union philosophy.
