they weren't going that fast, that truck doesn't have that kind of top end, and the car was in 2nd gear so the engine would over rev making it sound like he was going faster than he was and the speedo was rigged to say 80 mph, in actuality they were going 40, maybe 50 mph. that's good old fashioned camera mastery and cinematography. and kick ass editing.

A friend of mine had a new '73 Valiant with a slant 6. Fuel mileage wasn't that great, but it was the gov't-mandated anti-pollution controls (that the carmakers themselves had to pay for, thank you) that were responsible for that. Anyway, the car itself was wonderful to ride in and drive, well finished, nicely trimmed, a very comfortable car with good road manners and excellent visibility. Pleasant, crisp styling, just a nice car.

Chrysler Australia produced a RHD Valiant of that body shape until 1971 when a whole new body replaced it. They ran the 225 Slant along with V8 option until the final model in 1970 which received the all new 245 hemi six upright engine. TubeGunner They had 2 main cars and 1 that was used in the 2 additional scenes they had to film to make the 90 minute mark. The main two cars were a 1970 and a 1971. The 70 Valiant was powered by a 318 (V8) while the 71 was powered by 225 Slant 6 engine (As was the car used to film the additional scenes which was a 1972 Valiant). The 1970 car (I'd say because of the more powerful engine: took the brunt of the stunts...) took the plunge from the cliff at the end with the Pete. I'm pretty sure the 71 was probably beaten up by the end... The 72 car should have survived with just some minor damage with the few scenes in which it was used in mind...

Plus 1693 wouldn't have reved past 2100 rpm unless they messed with it. This Chase has a looped base track that plays in the background of the engine lugging to give the effect that it's not even trying to keep up.

The last surviving Peterbilt 351 is owned by Brad Wike of South Carolina. He owns the Peterbilt 351 that they built for the movie when they wanted to add a few scenes,a few years later after the film was made that is.It's a 1961 351 with a 335 Cummins and 5×4 Transmission,it's a Twin-Stick.
The two original trucks in the Film itself (Without added scenes) had Single Sticks with the button. They also were 1955 and 1957 351's with a 1693 CAT.If you see one of the scenes where Mr.Weaver walks close to the truck at the Gas Station, you'll see a "CAT" decal on the truck's hood, right on the right side behind the hood ornament, below where the mirrior would sit.If you look at the Elbow Intakes on the trucks, which on a 281/351 is the right fender, you'll notice how to tell what kind of engine it has.
Trucks have high end torque with low HP,so acceleration isn't the best, but it isn't even that hard to get a large rig going at speed.

    I always called bullshit here.
Mann is traveling between 60 - 95 through the whole scene.
The scene from the Chuck's Cafe sign till the fence is 5 minutes.
At that speed, he would have made Chuck's way faster than he did.

Because the truck driver didn't really want to get by, he just wanted to terrorize Mann. He gave him 2 options.... Stay behind him and go very slow but be safe. Or pass him but get bullied by the truck and possibly killed. The truck driver was pissing Mann off by deliberately going slow, trying to force Mann into acting more like a man and try to pass the truck. When Mann did finally pass the truck, the truck driver had Mann right where he wanted him.
