Fun Fact: The credits for the film has an entire section dedicated to everyone that has worked at Blue Sky, complete with Nimona shapeshifting into a squirrel. (Like their mascot, Scrat.) A bittersweet, but great note to end on. I'm glad they got the last laugh against Disney.

As to why Ambrosius and Bal stand out: Ambrosius is a direct descendant of Gloreth, and Bal is a commoner, so they have different colored armor. The others are all presumably from the same general class of minor nobility.

In the book, Nimona can regenerate, even when her head is cut off. A blood sample can also be activated by her to transform. Finally, another power that was not shown in the movie is her ability to create a double, but the double’s main personality is whatever Nimona was feeling when she creates the double, she could very well make an evil twin

Also, Nimona's true form in the film, I believe is her little girl form. In the book, it's her dark monster form.
Speaking of her dark monster form, the one from movie was like a giant beast of some sort and in the book, it was like a dragon-horse thing and it has green flames on its body and can breathe the same flame too.

"I'm Nimona" it very much does mean something, it is a special line that I think means a lot not just to the creator of Nimona, Nate Stevenson, who is trans and a super incredible guy and incredible story teller, but it also means a lot to people like Nate, other transgender people, non-binary people, genderfluid people, and just anyone who just doesn't feel like they fit the norm of our societal stereotypical boxes of gender and identity and I love that response so much, cause Ballister is like "what are you" and Nimonas response is "I'm Nimona" and it is so powerful and so beautiful and I love it, it represents all of us out there, no matter who or what we are, I am me

  • @terezakostacka3572

In the beginning, Gloreth is depicted as this fierce warrior, even her statue represents that. The reveal that she was actually just a little girl who reacted the way she did just because everyone around her did just hit hard. She had no problem with Nimona until the villagers found out about her. Just goes to show you that bigotry and hatred is learned.

I also hated the Director’s little speech about her nightmare but it’s a Very important scene because it hammers in the very real motivation behind hateful actions. Which is fear. Fear motivates her and blinds her and it’s a very real and terrifying thing. It’s not an excuse and it’s NOT a good reason. But it’s real.

    • @astrofan1993
      @astrofan1993 Před 5 měsíci +4

As Master Yoda once said, "Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate... leads to suffering." I reminded my girlfriend, who is a big fan of Star Wars, of that when I showed her this movie a week ago in advance of the Oscars, which this movie was up for in the Best Animated Feature category (but to no one's surprise, lost out to Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron).
People are afraid of what they don't understand. Most people can eventually overcome their fears, though, as we saw with Ballister, Ambrosius, the citizens at large, and even Todd (even though he was a jerk right up until the very end). But there will be those who don't want to understand and open their hearts and minds, like we saw with the Director. They would rather be more comfortable drowning in their fear, anger, and hatred than try to learn and understand, no matter how much you try to reach out. Those are the people who cannot be helped, so they must be defeated.

The reason for Ballister and ambrosius standing out with their armors is:
Silver armor is the regular pattern for the knights from noble bloodlines.
Ambrosios wears a golden armor due to his direct descendence from Gloreth.
Ballister is a commoner anointed to be a knight and wears black (still not equal to those wearing silver or gold).

So much to unpack here. You asked if this was supposed to represent anything. Short answer, yes.
The original creator is Nate Stevenson. A trans person. When he wrote this nimona was an extension of his feelings at the time. Nimona was never accepted because she was different, not because she was dangerous.
"The director is just a cartoonish villain now"....a commentary on what's going on now with people villainizing trans people. So many people are acting just like that to make us feel unsafe, like we don't belong, and trying to make us look bad. I'm still mindblown on how good this film was! It's entertaining, funny, beautifully animated, has fantastic and well-developed characters, and insanely emotional moments! The climax where Nimona actually tries to attempt suicide and saying that she sometimes want someone to stick a sword through her heart really choked me up. Since this was originally a Blue Sky Studios film (studio that made Ice Age and Rio) before they shut down and Netflix picking it up, I can happily say that they went out with a bang.

I knew my highschool and elementary school bully, He talks and acts exactly like todd, and to my knowledge he still does to this day lmao. Also i think the armors that stand out were because ambrosious was the descendent of gloreth so therefore to front line, his armor was supposed to look like gloreth's armor, but since ballister is not from the bloodline of any of the previous knights and a new number on the lines, they customized a new design for him, maybe making him a black armor was to made fun of him by making him not fit in on purpose, or inspired on that in the webcomic, his surname and knight name is "blackheart" :>.
And since it's supposed to be a trans allegory, i believe the director is perfect the way her character is just simply full of hate, and so many people are like that irl it's scary how human she is by being so bland

The whole point of the director is that she's the kind of person that can't change, the ones that have been raised in such a way that there's no way to see things differently for them, whenever they see something that challenges their vision, they see it as a threat, and sometimes these kind of people convince themselves that they are right to "deal" with this different things themselves. She's convinced she's doing the right thing, that Gloreth killed a monster, that only royal people should become knights, she tries to do "the right thing", even when everyone else can see that it's not the right thing

I guess I could have expected this, but every CZcamsr who I’ve seen watch this movie who is not involved in the LGBTQIA+ community had all of the trans themes and all of the important messages of the story and how it relates to the real world go right over their head, while all the queer people I saw who watched this movie picked up on EVERY detail. I suppose it’s only natural and it’s good that they still like the movie, but it makes me frustrated and sad that 75% of this movies messaging and the commentary it has on the real world, which goes throughout the WHOLE movie and is the MOST important part of the movie, is lost on people not within the target audience.
It just shocks me when I see queer people making hour long commentaries on this movie where they spot every message, every bit of representation, every complex idea, and then I see anybody else watch it and it’s really just an action movie to them. It breaks my heart how much of a disconnect there is between our experiences, where even with such genius allegories the points of these trans-representative characters will go over an unknowing persons head.
It shocks me how big the disconnect is; how every queer person I’ve seen watch this movie has bursted out crying for Nimona because they know her pain so personally, but most of the cishet who’ve seen this movie and cared to talk about really didn’t have much to say. It’s shocking, but also completely expected.
I highly recommend anybody reading this to go and see the videos made by the people in the lgbtqia+ community, because they get RIGHT to the heart of this movie and they catch EVERY detail.
And a final note; I don’t say this to criticize or look down on Sophie’s experience watching the movie. I’m happy she liked it. But I noticed that disconnect, and I didn’t want to say nothing about it. Again, please check out the other CZcamsrs reactions or analysis, because there’s no more meaningful analysis than from the people who this movie was made about and for; from the people who get this movie the most.

There are some big differences between the book and the film, but going purely what's presented in the film, I don't get the impression that Nimona ever became a shapeshifter. That's probably what she's always been.

It's a known fact that even other non-human primates can't really throw things with anywhere near the accuracy or speed humans can manage once we've learned how. And it's clearly something Nimona *did* learn how to do eventually, since she throws an axe clear across the courtyard during the prison break, but it definitely seems like something she had zero experience with at that point.

The director isn't Gloreth, but simply a woman that spent all her life living in fear of the monsters from the myths and tales that she learned. Like Gloreth herself, she got her hatred from the example set by her elders and reproduced that system. She merely repeats Gloreth's words like a religious incantation as she dies, almost like as if she is trying to channel her hate to smite Nomina with the canon. She is merely the face of the systemic problem inhabiting this world, and resembles in many ways some real world figures.

Ambrosius Goldenloin is a direct-line descendant of Gloreth herself, which is why he wears golden armor; Ballister Boldheart is not 'of noble birth', which is why he wears gray armor.
It's worth noting that the only things Nimona actively destroys are things relating to 'killing monsters' - she trashes the suits of armor by tossing the swords supporting them; she rips the power cord from the 'monster slayer' ride; she smashes the screen advertising little kids playing a game. talking about hoe many 'monsters' they killed. Throughout, she only injuures people who are trying to kill her and (afaik) never actually kills anyone.

The creator of the graphic novels this animated film is based on is trans. Nimona represents gender non-confirming/gender fluid. It critiques how people in power force their beliefs into law and foster hatred. I don't think the director was a cartoon villain, but one that was too entrenched in false belief about breaking away from tradition. You can see many politicians today that hide behind religion and warp it into something to excuse their homophobia, transphobia, bigotry, racism, etc. to have a tight grip on power. Even within the LGBTQIA+ community have had their issues protecting their own out of self-hatred or not caring for those outside their own sub-group in the community. Just that mentality that protecting the system that created villains such as the director is also how some feel cherry picking who they protect and who they deem not directly affecting their part of the community. The whole system is the problem.

Regarding what Nimona is: she's Nimona and all her forms (except when she's other people) r her. In a storytelling sense she's also a metaphor for transgender/genderfluid people, who also face similar problems. They get accused of being a threat for society and people (even those who try to be supportive) always try to figure out which of their forms or looks is TRUE FORM. But the truth is, both with Nimona and trans people, no matter how they look now or looked in the past, they're just them and their gender (and in Nimona's case species) is whatever they feel like currently. We shouldn't doubt that, after all, it's just another version of normal. As for where Nimona came from, I'm glad they didn't reveal it, as she's more then a character, she's a metaphor for people different from most in society. And such people have existed for as long as actual societies did. So she came from the same place as us (humans and living beings in general).

3:32 be glad, you never met someone like this.... but it´s just the typical bully, you meet everywhere... for this movie, they just made him go "over the top" to show haw hilarious his behaviour is... he is bulliyng Bal because of his not "noble" roots... look at school, when a rich kid gets at a kid from a poor family..... sadly, this can be seen anywhere.... but that makes him not a villain, just an a$$h0le....

1:55 it's funny that you say that because that's one of the reasons I don't think the Queen is as altruistic as she presents herself to be.
I believe the Queen (and possibly her parents) spent her life crafting the society to groom children into wanting to kill monsters, to want to become knights. The Queen wanted more knights, better knights, and Ballister was proof of concept.

Guess it’s gonna have to be replies to myself.
So “I’m Nimona” is is both trans and non-binary affirmation because Bal is trying to put Nimona (a shapeshifter) into a box that makes him comfortable, but Nimona doesn’t fit in his boxes. Bal, almost died in a literal closet because he was so locked into his (visually coded) medieval world view.

Well, you’re wrong. People hate her, not because she’s dangerous(hate someone because you think she/he can hurt someone else is SO hypocrite, EVERYBODY CAN BE DANGEROUS and hurt others)but because she is different(she didn’t do anything to them, to hurt them, really. They’re just being stupid and have being raised a lot of prejudice) and don’t give her a real chance.

Irs like watching someone ALMOST get it... its tragic that you cant see what the story is, how its being told and who everyone is, its not about "where is she from" the entire movie is litterly just "accept people - the movie" and everyone live in fear, the director is not flat but her arc is flat, she is the same as everyone else EXCEPT by the end where everyone else change and she dosent.
The movie is about fear and acceptence, not good vs evil.

Kinda funny hearing you call Gloreth stupid with moments like "Is [I'm Nimona] supposed to mean something" and "You could've just answered, honestly. Like, she said she wanted to be his sidekick, yet she tells him nothing about herself. Nothing about his true intentions. And she's getting on his nerves" and "I can see both sides" and "Is that Gloreth? The Director?" Self-awareness clearly isn't your strong side. Criticizing others for the flaws you, yourself, are guilty of clearly is. :/
