  • The Kremlin has changed its attitude towards punishment for “enemies of the country.”
Russians who left the country will return sooner or later, but “those who have become enemies of our country” should not prepare for a return, Dmitry Peskov said.
“There are such people too, there is no need to exaggerate their number. But for those who have become enemies, there is probably hardly a place in our homeland,” he said in an interview with the RBC TV channel.
Those who left the country and became “enemies” are unlikely to find a place in Russia now, said press secretary Dmitry Peskov. In December, Dmitry Medvedev proposed introducing a ban on the return of “enemies of the people.” Commenting on this statement, Peskov said that this is a private opinion. Nine months later, this idea became the official position of the Kremlin.
Details. “As our growing market becomes more attractive against the backdrop of negative economic trends in many countries where these people have left, they will come here,” Peskov told RBC. He clarified that there is no need to prepare for the return of “those who have become enemies of our country.” “There are such people too, there is no need to exaggerate their number. But for those who have become enemies, there is probably hardly a place in our homeland,” Peskov said.
▪️In a conversation with RBC, Peskov did not specify who he considered “enemies of the country.” But the definition of this concept can be found in earlier statements by the president's press secretary. “There are those people who not only did not understand, not only were afraid, but who began to criticize the authorities, who began to attack” the military heroes. “These are the enemies of the state, and we will fight them,” Peskov said last April.
▪️In February of this year, Vladimir Putin voiced a similar position. “Whoever takes the path of direct betrayal, committing terrorist and other crimes directed against the security of our society and the territorial integrity of the country, will be held accountable by law. But we will never become like the Kyiv regime and the Western elites, who are and have been engaged in witch hunts,” the Russian leader said.
▪️In December, former Russian President and now Deputy Head of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev wrote on Telegram: “Traitors who hate their country so much that they call for its defeat and death should be considered hostis publicus, enemies of society...” Such people should not be allowed back into the country until the end of their days, Medvedev said.
▪️Peskov then called Medvedev’s post a manifestation of his civic position: “You know that now, in general, this is a rather emotional moment and, of course, many people are showing their civic position, including Dmitry Anatolyevich.” This position has now become the official position of the Kremlin.
