  • Subscriber requested a review of the Laguna REVO 1216 lathe, so I thought why not. In this video I discuss my thoughts on the lathe, likes and dislikes. The things I like about this lathe far exceed the dislikes. I have not had the opportunity to work on any lathes that are of the same or similar size to do a comparison.

    Reminder: I am new to wood turning, so please DO NOT do as I do. This is NOT a teaching or “how to” video. Maybe you can pick up a thing or two NOT to do. Working with tools of any kind is dangerous and must be handled at your own risk. Please if you see something I’m doing wrong, provide any feedback and/or advice in the comments below.
    I am documenting my journey into wood turning. Wood turning is a new hobby, which I find enjoyable and rewarding. It has also been a passion of mine to work with video. So, it is my intentions to produce a weekly video, which I hope is entertaining.

    Thanks for the review, really great. I bought the laguna and am on back order so it’s nice to hear that you like yours. I have never turned before so am excited to start!

      I think you'll be happy with it, but I strongly suggest finding a local woodturners club near you (where ever that is). It will be extremely helpful to find out the dangers of turning and the safe ways to use it and the tools. Keep me posted and good luck.

    Thank you for an honest review. I have been considering one for some days now, seeing I need one at the moment. The only thing I agree with in the complain section though is the plastic doors. Surely it would have been cheaper to make some stamped metal covers, but Laguna decided otherwise. If I break one, I think I will just fabricate my own to replace it.

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips  Před 2 lety

      Metal would have been better, for sure. If the door breaks off on mine... i'm probably not doing anything to it. Chalk it up to "better ventilation". LOL

    New turners and even some old ones forget to pull the headstock pin. This can damage it when the lathe is turned on. The other solution is an interlock but that's money. So the press and hold makes sense.

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips  Před 3 lety +1

      Absolutely agree.... but then as I watched the video I had a thought. If you look at the power on and off button, notice the clear separated plastic section? How cool would it be if that was the headstock lock and to disengage the lock you have to either press the power on or power off button? I think that would be slick!! And safe. 😉👍

    The shaft lock keeps you from burning out the motor if you forget to unlock it before turning the machine on...........that's a big plus in my opinion.

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips  Před 2 lety

      yeah I got mixed feelings about it..... Design wish.... it would be a great option to lock it and you can't turn it on until you unlock it.

    It's funny listening to people nit pick little things while I'm using a shop smith knock off lol. His complaints would be my pros lol. I'm getting a new lathe. I just wanted to see if I would like it. So it only cost me 150 instead of paying 1200 to 2k then deciding I didn't want to do it. Plus I can always use it's other features maybe the drill press.

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips  Před 7 měsíci

      Yeah sometimes "nit picking" can be silly. However, for some people that one "nit" is just too much of an annoyance that it makes the person looking to buy the product realize they should go with the other machine. I don't know if you've seen my other videos, where I started my channel on a $150 WEN machine, before moving to the Laguna. I did a lot of research to replace the WEN and the nit picking by others helped me make my choice. I almost purchased a JET 1221, glad I didn't. I'm happy with this machine, even with the minor... "nits" LOL. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Great review I have been looking at this lathe for a little while and been considering a purchase. I like the size and the features compared to others. I have heard about the shipping issues from others as well with Laguna. Did you have it shipped directly to you or pick it up at a local store? Thank you for the information and the videos

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips  Před 3 lety

      Actually, the first lathe I had shipped to me was the Jet 1221 and the bed was cracked. I shipped it back and got a refund because the place had the Jet's on back order. So I searched around I found the Laguna, which was shipped to me, busted... but they send me a replacement right away. I'm happy with the choice I made.

    Live Center is correct, because it spins with the workpiece.
    Dead Centers don't have a bearing, & the workpiece spins on the center.

    Nice review, I have same lathe, about 6 months now. Now it blows fuse ever time I turn it on. Laguna is telling me I have to buy a voltage regulator for it before they will do anything. Has anyone had this problem. I love the lathe but I know everyone is not going out and buying voltage regulators to use. My dealer I bought it from thinks it’s the control board. Been running it now for 6 months with no problems.

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips  Před rokem

      Sorry to hear that. I have not had an issue with power or fuses (knock on wood). Sounds like a frustrating situation and if I were faced with the same problem, I might ask neighbors/friends if they know of an electrician that would check out my electrical feed from the main panel to the lathe and if they had a voltage meter to confirm.... for free (if its a friend) or low expense (if recommended). Electricity is one thing I don't mess with, for safety reasons. I don't want to get hurt myself or burn the house down. Good luck and let me know what you find out. Thanks

      The mounting holes for the extension bed are 2" lower on the outboard side and the 10" extension comes with a tool rest extension to compensate for this. I have this lathe but have not yet mounted the extension on the outboard side. Like Moving Chips I ordered a 12" long 1" diameter replacement tool rest from Buffalo Woodturning Products. Best Wood Tools Post that has interchangeable rests.

    Hi
    I have this model of lathe, you won't be able to turn 16" pieces with the way the lathe is situated, you have to turn using the reverse switch so you would be standing on the other side , great review

    A work around for lock is to lock the index throw to lock the spinndle which will help with chuck changes ..but don't fire the machine while index lock will cook a belt... I bought one last week and the only thing I don’t like is to turn off the power to the digital read out you have to unplug it

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips  Před 3 lety +1

      The digital readout doesn't bother me, but I also have it plugged into a surge protector with other things (air circulator/filter, lights, etc.) and I could always turn the power off on that to kill it all. Just a thought.

    Hi! Nice review, I like your critical edge!👍
    I have this very same lathe and thinking about getting a matching stand, too. It's quite pricey but looks nice. What are your thoughts, is the lathe better placed on a benchtop or table or is it more practical on its designated stand? I live in an apartment where space is limited, and a stand would have it's pros and cons, too. It's a definite pro that on a stand it would be easy to roll the lathe out of the way when not in use. The negative side is that the stand itself needs some extra room, and there's not much storage capacity in it, apart from the holes for hanging up the tools. I cannot decide. From your experience, are there any other considerations that could justify the use of a stand, or make it unnecessary?
    Best regards, Attila

    • @movingchips
      @movingchips  Před rokem +1

      Great question, but you have to understand my response comes without the knowledge of having a stand. I too would love the stand, but it is pricey and my garage floor is uneven. I adjusted the legs of the table and don't have to worry about being level. I would want to ensure my apartment floor was very level when wheeling the lathe around. The stand is a smaller foot print and a table will require a bigger foot print for the same stability. That being said, when I do outboard turning, it is not the easiest to manage on the table. I believe if I had the stand on wheels, I could swing the lathe into a more comfortable position (assuming I found a stable location on my uneven floor). Those are my thoughts, hope this helps. Thanks

    • @attilakovacs5803
      @attilakovacs5803 Před rokem

      @@movingchips Thank you for the quick response! Your views have helped a lot. Outboard turning is an important aspect I didn't consider. Actually, it is one of the main selling point of this lathe, so it would be unwise to make it uncomfortable. Manoeuvreability is very important too, and it's a great plus that with the stand I could move the lathe out of the way easily. It would be difficult to move the lathe on a bench.
      I have made up my mind and I'll go for the stand. It's very expensive, but luckily, I can just manage, even if I do overstretch myself a little. In any case, investing in a good tool is a good idea in these times, when money is losing its value day by day. I cannot order Laguna's own bench lighting unfortunately (the flat one with the LED tube), because that would be really too expensive. I've found a type of folding bench lamp at IKEA, a couple of those fitted with normal LED bulbs will definitely keep me going for some time.
      Thanks again for your valuable thoughts and happy turning!👍🌳🌲
